Stripped of Their Royal Titles, King Frederick Makes a Surprise Move for His Nephews
On his 57th birthday this week, King Frederik of Denmark bestowed the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog on his nephews Count Nikolai and Count Felix of Monpezat The ancient order of chivalry is used today to recognize notable Danes for their service or contributions to their country Nikolai and Felix had their princely titles stripped by their grandmother Queen Margrethe in 2022, just before she abdicated the throne King Frederik of Denmark may have celebrated his 57th birthday this week, but he marked the occasion by bestowing gifts on two of his nephews. On May 26, the Danish monarch presented Count Nikolai of Monpezat and Count Felix of Monpezat with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog. The presentation took place at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. The Order of the Dannebrog is a Danish order of chivalry instituted in 1671 by King Christian V. While once limited to 50 noblemen, the order is used today to recognize notable Danes for their service or contributions to their country. The official Instagram account of the Danish royal family documented the occasion, noting,"As a result of the appointment, the counts — like other Danish recipients of the Grand Cross — must have prepared a personal knight shield. When finished, it will be hung in the Knight Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød." Nikolai also took to his personal Instagram page, saying he was "very honored to have received the Order of the Dannebrog yesterday from my uncle on his birthday." Nikolai and Felix are the eldest sons of Prince Joachim, the younger brother of the King. They are Joachim's only children with his first wife, Alexandra Christina, Countess of Frederiksborg. The couple divorced in 2005, and Prince Joachim married Princess Marie of Denmark in 2008. They also have two children, Count Henrik and Countess Athena of Monpezat. Prince Joachim's children were originally also princes and princesses, also titled with "His/Her Highness." However, in September 2022, Queen Margrethe announced that she would be stripping Joachim's children of those titles, demoting them to "His/Her Excellency" and the count/countess moniker. However, the four children maintain their place in the Danish line of succession. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! In her unexpected announcement, the Queen shared that she wished to "create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent" without the responsibilities related to the Royal House of Denmark. In March 2024, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie gave an interview to The Washington Post in Washington, D.C., where the prince works as a defense industry attaché at the Danish Embassy. They admitted that they had "complicated" feelings about how the Queen's announcement was handled. "We weren't happy about the way it happened," Princess Marie said. "But it's a family thing. It's complicated." In addition to their titles, Joachim and Marie also shared that they felt their children had lost their given names. "It's their identity since they were born," Marie added. "So it's more than just what people see as a title." Regardless, Prince Joachim said in the interview, "We've moved on." They have also supported Queen Margrethe, King Frederik and other family members at various events since. King Frederik assumed the throne in January 2024, following Queen Margrethe's decision to abdicate. The former monarch was recently hospitalized, and cited her health as a reason for stepping down when she announced her plans in 2023. "In February this year, I underwent extensive back surgery. Everything went well, thanks to the competent health personnel, who took care of me," she said, in part. "Inevitably, the operation gave cause to thoughts about the future – whether now would be an appropriate time to pass on the responsibility to the next generation. I have decided that now is the right time." Read the original article on People

No deal if GRS not the driver
Published on: Tuesday, May 27, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 27, 2025 Text Size: Joachim said the coalition remains open to discussions but has yet to engage with any party from Peninsular Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) must be in the driver's seat in any collaboration for the coming state elections, said Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam. Joachim said this when asked to comment on Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar's statement that PKR is aiming for at least 13 seats in the Sabah polls. 'As long as GRS has the absolute majority, then we welcome collaboration with other parties. 'But what's important is that GRS must be in the driver's seat,' he told reporters after a press conference on Sabah Head of State's upcoming birthday celebration at the Ministry of Communications integrated complex. He said GRS must win and stressed the focus should be on the coalition itself rather than its component parties. Joachim said the coalition remains open to discussions but has yet to engage with any party from Peninsular Malaysia. Advertisement He said GRS welcomes healthy competition but is focused on winning as a coalition. He was also asked to comment on Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) secretary general Dato Seri Azmin Ali's statement that Bersatu has idenfied potential seats to contest in the Sabah elections. Joachim, who is also Kundasang Assemblyman, said they are free to do so as Malaysia is a democratic country, and GRS is open for a friendly contest with the other parties. He added that to his knowledge, GRS has not had any talks with Bersatu on election cooperation and specific discussions with Perikatan Nasional (PN). 'If possible, it would be best for GRS to win the seats uncontested, but I don't think so,' he said. On Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah's statement that GRS is aiming for at least 52 state seats, he declined to say how many seats PBS is eyeing out of the figure. 'GRS includes PBS and Star, so we are all in it. My side has been asking for seats, but we will discuss about it. 'What is more important is that we identify which seats the coalition can win. GRS must win. Don't talk about individual parties first – GRS,' he said. Local coalition GRS consists of Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (PHRS), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and United Sabah National Organisation (Usno). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah gears up for grand 74th official birthday celebration of TYT
Joachim (fifth from left) with other guests at the special press conference. KOTA KINABALU (May 26): Seven main events have been lined up to enliven the 74th official birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, this June. Deputy Chief Minister II cum Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said meticulous preparations have been underway since early February by the main and implementing committees to ensure smooth execution. 'This celebration is an annual state event, not only to honour His Excellency but also to showcase unity and love for the state among the people,' he said at a special press conference held at the Ministry of Communications integrated complex in Kepayan today. As chairman of the main committee, Joachim expressed pride in the commitment shown by all parties involved. 'We want this event to be more than symbolic — we want the people to genuinely feel its significance,' he said. Among the key events is a grand parade at Padang Merdeka, featuring over 80 contingents from government departments, private agencies, NGOs, higher education institutions and students. This broad participation reflects the unity and patriotism of Sabahans towards their state leadership. A full dress rehearsal will be held a few days prior, with Joachim personally attending to assess preparations. 'I will be present during the rehearsal to ensure every detail is perfect,' he said. Another key component is a special media conference — now an official event — to enhance communication between the organising committee and the media. Joachim emphasised the role of the media in effectively conveying information and supporting government programmes. Other highlights include a state banquet and meet-and-greet session uniting state leaders, diplomats, department heads, and community representatives. This event serves to honour contributions made toward Sabah's development and stability. The fifth event is a religious programme focused on spiritual reflection and prayers for the well-being of TYT, his consort, and family. Joachim noted its importance in promoting harmony across Sabah's multicultural society. Starting in early June, local authorities will also install birthday billboards across districts, fostering a festive atmosphere and demonstrating local support for TYT's leadership. The final major event will showcase community and cultural activities, such as traditional performances, folk entertainment, and interactive programmes to reinforce state pride and cultural identity. Joachim invited all Sabahans to gather at Padang Merdeka in June, starting as early as 6am, to witness the main celebration. 'I call on everyone, regardless of background, to join in this celebration as a sign of respect and love for our state leader,' he said. He also urged the public to pray for the TYT's continued health and well-being, praising his caring and people-centric leadership as a model for all. Also present at the press conference were KKTP permanent secretary Datuk Dr Jamili Nais, TYT's private secretary Izharudin Jalaludin, Sabah Broadcasting director Mohd Yusni Mohamed Ali, and Sabah Information director Jainisah Mohd Noor.
