Celtic flag spotted in Champions League final crowd as PSG match Lisbon Lions achievement
The two teams' massive successes are very rarely seen Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) YESTERDAY saw one of football's biggest annual fixtures, the Champions League final. Paris St Germain took on Inter Milan for the ultimate prize, but there was a surprise in the stands for Celtic fans harking back to their own glory at that level. The display seen in the crowd in Munich's Allianz Arena was unfurled as the French team matched the achievement of that legendary Glasgow side. Lifting Europe's biggest trophy wrapped up a major quadruple, making Luis Enrique's men the first to do so since Jock Stein set the record. PSG stormed to the league title comfortably this season, won the Coupe de France last weekend in a 3-0 victory over Reims, and lifted the Trophee des Champions against Monaco. The 1966-67 Celtic team beat Rangers to the league and League Cup, and pipped Aberdeen to the Scottish Cup. And of course to wrap it up, both quadruple winners added a UCL to their trophy cabinet in a final against Inter Milan. It was 2-1 all those decades ago in Lisbon, but this year's contest in Germany was a much more comfy 5-0 romp. This weekend the scorers were Achraf Hakimi, Desire Doue, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and 19-year-old Senny Mayulu. 58 years ago it was Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers who netted for the victors who are still hailed as heroes to this day. The seemingly all-conquering PSG team have picked up the ultimate honour in just their first season after the departure of Kylian Mbappe. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed The Hoops seem a while away yet from being hopeful of picking up another Champions League and major quadruple, but the domestically dominant team also failed to earn a treble this campaign. Brendan Rodgers' side ran away with the Scottish Premiership and got the League Cup via penalty shootout against rivals Rangers. But last month Aberdeen surprised them, again in a shootout, and lifted their first Scottish Cup in 35 years. The 1990 final win for the Dons once again came on pens against the Celts. Captain Callum McGregor said after the game that missing out on the cup and treble opportunity was amongst the worst moments of his career. PSG desperate to join Lisbon Lions 'club of one' as Luis Enrique eyes equalling astonishing Celtic team
Luis Enrique's team are hoping to become the first time to win four major trophies in a single season since Celtic in 1967. Paris Saint-Germain could match a unprecedented record set by Celtic 58 years ago if they can down Inter Milan in the Champions League final to claim a quadruple. . Celtic are the only team in world football to have claimed four major trophies in one season when they became the first ever British team to win the European Cup in 1967 after they famously edged out Inter 2-1 in Lisbon. They also won the Scottish title by three points ahead of Rangers, the Scottish Cup against Aberdeen and the League Cup against Rangers. In fact, the Hoops walked away with FIVE trophies in that campaign, having also defeated Partick Thistle in the final of the Glasgow Cup. Although plenty teams have won trebles down the years, Celtic's haul of lifting four major honours in one season has remained unrivalled. However, Luis Enrique's PSG could now equal that feat, and they'll have to beat Inter in Saturday's showpiece final at the Allianz Arena in Munich to do it. The Spaniard's side romped home to another Ligue 1 title - winning the championship by finishing 19 points clear of Marseille. After lifting the Trophees des Champions (French Super Cup) against Qatar earlier in the season, the Paris giants completed a domestic treble by dispatching Reims 3-0 in the final of the Coupe de France last weekend. And if they can go one better by doing the business in Bavaria on Saturday, then they will draw level with the record set by Jock Stein and Celtic's all-conquering side nearly 60 years ago. PSG have never won the Champions League, despite boasting superstars such as Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in recent seasons. They reached the final in the 2019/20 season, only to fall to a 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich with former Parisians winger Kingsley Coman bagging the winner. Aberdeen vs Celtic LIVE SCORE: Hoops eye historic NINTH treble in Scottish Cup final showdown vs Dons
The Hoops are chasing a clean sweep of trophies while the Dons will want to end a 35-year wait UP FOR THE CUP UP FOR THE CUP Aberdeen vs Celtic LIVE SCORE: Hoops eye historic NINTH treble in Scottish Cup final showdown vs Dons – latest team news ALL roads lead to Hampden today as Celtic bid to complete a historic NINTH treble - with Brendan Rodgers completing a remarkable THREE of them. Brendan Rodgers would also become the first manager in green and white to win three trebles, surpassing Celtic's European Cup winning boss, Jock Stein. 2 Both sides have already met at Hampden this year in the League Cup semi-final Credit: Kenny Ramsay 2 The Dons have to go back over a decade since they last touched silverware Opponents Aberdeen's season didn't go as planned, but the Dons still have a crack at silverware, the small task of Brendan Rodgers treble-chasing Celtic stand between them and the Scottish Cup. The Dons conceded 10 goals in their last two matches against Celtic, including a 5-1 home loss against a second-string Hoops side. Aberdeen star Mats Knoester has said that Celtic should be looked forward to, not something to be feared. Many thought that after the start of the season, Aberdeen could split the old-firm, and maybe even surpass them both, but Jimmy Thelin's side scraped into Europe in the end, finishing fifth. Nevertheless they have the chance to end their agonising 35-year wait for Scottish Cup glory and the manager is taking inspiration from Crystal Palace's shock victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final. And a former Dons midfielder has also enjoyed success this season with Lewis Ferguson skippering Bologna to the Coppa Italia and ending their 51-year wait. If Aberdeen are to pull off what almost seems like the unthinkable given Celtic's utter dominance over the Dons, they will have to find the sort of form which saw them come from 2-0 down at Parkhead earlier in the season to secure a point. 'Great coach' Rodgers' treble chance 'no surprise'
Kasper Schmeichel is not surprised that "great coach" Brendan Rodgers is on the brink of becoming the first Celtic manager to complete three domestic trebles. Goalkeeper Schmeichel is likely to be one of the first names on Rodgers' team lines as he selects his side to face Aberdeen in Saturday's Scottish Cup final at Hampden. The 38-year-old has played under the Northern Irishman at Leicester City and now Celtic, who have already won the Scottish Premiership and League Cup this season. "The thing I can say about Brendan is he provides a framework, not just on the pitch but off the pitch of what it means to be a professional footballer and what is expected of you," the Denmark keeper said. Do miracles come this big for Aberdeen against Celtic? What did we learn when Celtic boss Rodgers met Faddy? How to follow Scottish Cup final on the BBC "He's incredibly clear in his messaging of what he wants and how he wants it done." Rodgers joined Celtic in 2016 a few months after leaving Liverpool and won all six domestic competitions in his next two seasons. A seventh, the League Cup, would follow in December 2018, but he would relinquish the opportunity of a third treble by leaving for Leicester two months later. Celtic were eight points clear at the top of the Premiership at the time, with Neil Lennon completing the title win and adding the Scottish Cup, but now Rodgers has a second chance to surpass the legendary Jock Stein's two trebles. "It is no surprise to me that he has success wherever he goes because he provides the players with a platform to go and perform and that's the mark of a great coach," Schmeichel suggested. "Football now is so detail orientated. You have to be so clear about every aspect you want. He is a very detail-orientated person and he likes things to be done a certain way. "He demands certain standards wherever he goes and it's up to players to rise up to those standards and to live by those standards and those values." Schmeichel said Rodgers was clear when he arrived at Leicester about what it meant to play for the club and that was heightened with Celtic as "he has the DNA of the club already within him" as a boyhood fan. "He leaves you in no doubt what it means to be a Celtic player and the responsibility to bear that shirt," the goalkeeper said. "His methods are always evolving. He's a very modern coach with traditional values and I think the best thing for a player - you are left in no doubt what is expected of you. There are no grey areas. "He's very clear about what he expects on the pitch and very clear what he expects of you off the pitch. That always creates an environment that players thrive in and that's shown everywhere he's been." Aberdeen, who finished fifth in the Premiership, have not beaten Celtic in 30 meetings since 2018 and November's 6-0 thrashing in the League Cup final was just one of three heavy defeats by the Glasgow side for Jimmy Thelin's side this season. However, Schmeichel insists that it "would never enter our minds" that completing the treble is a foregone conclusion. "We will be taking this very seriously, like any other game, with the utmost respect for the opposition and what they can do and their threats," he added. "If you take your foot off the peddle just a micro percent, any level, they'll beat you - teams are that good now. There are no easy games any more."
