Patriots coach Mike Vrabel comments on trading QB Joe Milton III
New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel commented on the decision to trade Joe Milton III to the Dallas Cowboys back in April, during an appearance on The Greg Hill Show Monday. The move initially came as a surprise given the upside Milton displayed on the team. There was a thought that the Patriots would have two cracks at finding a franchise quarterback. Drake Maye was obviously the first option, but if he didn't work out or got injured, perhaps Milton would have been good enough to fill that void. The Patriots ultimately opted to trade him, along with a 2025 seventh-round draft pick, to the Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round pick. "Just another coach's decision. Felt like this is what was best for our team. Trying to do what's best for the team," said Vrabel. Milton made his debut with the Cowboys on Saturday, and it was a mostly up-and-down performance. There were a few plays that impressed, but there were also plays where he missed open receivers. He went 17-of-29 throwing the ball for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He averaged 4.9 yards per completion and finished with a 58.6 completion percentage. It's hard not to feel like this decision was made partly so Drake Maye could be the clear starter moving forward. The Bailey Zappe and Mac Jones dynamic did not work well under Bill Belichick, so further competition might not have been ideal for Maye. Either way, it's clear that Vrabel is confident in his decision. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. Twitter reacts to shaky debut performance from former Patriots QB
There's no question that the Dallas Cowboys got the full Joe Milton III experience in Saturday's preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. The wow factor was there with the former New England Patriots sixth-round draft pick throwing nukes at targets. No one ever questioned Milton's elite throwing power. It has always been the accuracy issues. That mixed bag was on full display for NFL fans in the Cowboys' preseason opener with Milton going 17-of-29 passing for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception. There were moments where he flashed his athleticism and made plays, but there were also times when he flat-out missed receivers or failed to put the ball in areas that gave them a chance to make a play. The accuracy issues were a major concern for Milton coming out of college as well, and it led to him falling down the draft board. Still, the rare athleticism and rocket arm make him an intriguing quarterback project. Here's what fans were saying about Milton after the game: Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook. Jerry Jones says "I have to pinch myself" over getting QB Joe Milton III
A year after the Cowboys wasted a fourth-round pick on a one-year backup quarterback in Trey Lance, they sent a fifth-rounder to New England for Joe Milton III and a seventh-round selection. This time around, the Cowboys think they got a steal. Before Saturday's preseason opener against the Rams, owner and G.M. Jerry Jones was asked about Milton. "I really have to pinch myself that we got him after the last game that he had up there, starting there for New England," Jones told Kristi Scales of 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. "I'm just excited that we had a chance to get him. And he hasn't disappointed. He's actually — we're just more and more encouraged by what we're seeing." There's a belief that the Patriots bailed on Milton because he wasn't willing to embrace his status as clear No. 2 to Drake Maye — and because his assessment may have not been inaccurate. The Pats are all in with Maye, and they need the locker room to feel the same way. In L.A., Milton completed 17 of 29 throws for 143 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, in nine drives. He also ran for 22 yards on five carries. The passing performance generated a passer rating of 68.6. Milton exited during the fourth quarter after injuring his elbow. The Cowboys have downplayed it as a bruise. For now, Milton is the guy who will be playing if starter Dak Prescott, who missed nine games in 2024 with a hamstring injury, suffers anything more than a bruise.

Cowboys QB Joe Milton III takes shot at Patriots in team comparison
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton III, who was traded by the New England Patriots back in April, noted one key difference between the two teams was in the quarterback room. He called Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott a "great leader" and noted that the veteran goes out of his way to help him behind the scenes. The 2024 sixth-round draft pick also said that he's been in "another building" where things were different. It seemed like a direct shot at the Patriots. "Dak is a great leader. He literally goes out of his way to help me, no matter if the coach is talking in the meeting," Milton said, via "... I've been in another building. I know how that goes. It's just very different over here." Milton was drafted to the Patriots behind Drake Maye, who was the No. 3 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft. The Patriots also had veteran Jacoby Brissett at quarterback, leaving Milton as the No. 3 option on the depth chart. Milton got most of the snaps in the Patriots' finale against the Buffalo Bills last season. Granted, the Bills rested most of their starters for the playoffs, but Milton went 22-of-29 passing for 241 yards and one touchdown. He also recorded a rushing touchdown in the game. Milton's comments are interesting considering Brissett was in the quarterback room in New England. There wasn't much he could have learned at the time from Maye, who was one of the youngest quarterbacks in the league. With that said, Prescott is a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback with nearly 10 years of NFL experience. We'll see if that success rubs off on Milton, who looks to be the No. 2 option at quarterback for the Cowboys. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.
