Which teams with strong starts will fade before the MLB playoffs?

We're just over a quarter of the way through the MLB season, and while some teams have already surpassed our expectations, nothing is decided in May. For ballclubs with postseason aspirations, it's the results in the fall that truly matter. On the latest episode of 'Rates & Barrels,' Joe Sheehan joined Derek VanRiper and Eno Sarris to break down which early overachievers will likely fade from the playoff picture as the season wears on. Watch the discussion below. A partial transcript has been edited for clarity and length. The full episode is available on YouTube below or in the 'Rates & Barrels' feed on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Derek: The question that Eno just took off the rundown without actually asking the question (laughs) … was which team today has the best record that won't make the playoffs? I'm assuming the Giants are your pick for that, then? Eno: Yeah, they are, and I'll run you through my reasoning for that real quick. I just think this offense is over its skis, and it's literally over its skis in terms of projections. They're scoring 4.6 runs per game, and they're projected to score 4.25, so they're over their skis in terms of projections. Then as I look around at that offense, I think that Tyler Fitzgerald is going to regress from where he is right now, and even though I do think there'll be some positive regression from Willy Adames, I think that Heliot Ramos may also have some regression built in. Mike Yastrzemski is also around 31 percent better than league average right now. And I know there's probably some mechanical changes and stuff, but at his age and given his track record, I just don't necessarily believe in him. We've had this famous thing with Wilmer Flores about how I said he was done, and then he hit seven homers in around three weeks. But I see age coming in, and it's just not an oppressive offense for me. They can get it done on pitching and maybe they'll squeak in, but it's not an impressive offense for me. Advertisement Joe: I agree with you. I can see them continuing the run prevention, I love the way they've managed Hayden Birdsong, Kyle Harrison might be up in that multi-inning role again, and I like the way Bob Melvin has run that staff. But I just think with the talent base in the offense and when you look at that division, they're going to only be able to really play for the wild card, and the NL wild card is just so competitive. So I'm with you, and even though they're not my pick, I agree that they're going to be one of the teams most likely to slip. Derek: Yeah, they're probably one of the first teams out when the dust clears in the NL playoff picture this fall. Who's your pick for this one then, Joe? The team that has the best record today that will fall short of the postseason. Joe: I'm following the numbers here. And as you guys know, I worked with Clay Davenport at Prospectus for a lot of years and he still runs which calculates third-order records. Third-order records take into account how well you've played, so your run differential, the teams you've played and what your underlying performance is contributing to runs. In other words, if you've hit well with runners in scoring position, that's likely to not be sustained. So if you look at the third-order record, the team that has the largest gap between its actual performance and its underlying performance is the Guardians. They're 24-17 (at the time of recording) to start the year, but when you look at Clay's numbers he's got them more as a 16-25 team. He just doesn't think they're good at all. That's a seven-game difference and this is consistent with last year as well. Last year they didn't show up well, and of course they had one of the all-time bullpen seasons and were actually able to carry that. But there was a combination of things that got three AL Central teams into the playoffs last year, it was a unique year, we'll just call it that. The Guardians still benefit from playing in that division and playing the White Sox a lot, but the underlying performance just isn't there. The bullpen was always going to regress — we've seen that — and the defense was considerably worse last year. The numbers that Clay publishes are picking up on this stuff, so I've got the Guardians not just missing the playoffs, but they might even be sellers by the deadline. Advertisement Derek: It would be a hard turn from where they are right now, but they have tricked us so many times on this show. We've been counting them out for years and waiting for them to have to do an actual rebuild. Some of it is the division and some of it is finding different ways to win. I can't even explain how they do it, but it does seem more flimsy than usual, looking at that roster right now. State Rep. Joe Sheehan to host pair of Sheboygan town halls at Mead Public Library

SHEBOYGAN – State Rep. Joe Sheehan, D-Sheboygan, will host two town hall meetings at Mead Public Library this month. The first will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 19 and the second from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 22. Both town halls will be in the Rocca Meeting Room at the library, 710 N. Eighth St., Sheboygan. A news release said constituents are invited to attend and share questions and comments about matters before the Wisconsin Assembly, including the direction of the state. Sheehan's office can be reached at 608-237-9126 for more information. If approved, voters would decide whether Wisconsin's Congressional delegation should support a U.S. Constitutional amendment to overturn the landmark 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, which opened the floodgates for unlimited corporate spending in elections. Here are answers to 8 questions. 'After the last few months, it has become clear that we need to take action on corporate money that is spent on elections here in Wisconsin,' Sheehan said in the news release. 'We just had the most expensive Supreme Court election in the nation's history, where both sides accepted large amounts of money from corporate donors. It is time we give the people of Wisconsin a chance to say whether or not the flow of corporate money into our elections is something they support.' If passed, the advisory referendum would be presented to voters during the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. Ipswich Town Women's footballers on brink of Championship

Ipswich Town Women's manager Joe Sheehan has said his side's near-certain promotion to the Championship will be a "special day". The Tractor Girls' stunning season culminates on Sunday as they host Cheltenham, with their superior goal difference meaning even a loss would still not stop the party. It will be the first time the club will compete in the second tier, ending their four-year stint in the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division. Sheehan, who initially worked in a voluntary role at the Suffolk club, said: "I'm incredibly proud and privileged to have played a part in the growth over so many years." 'From 40 fans to 10,000' Sheehan was appointed manager of the women's side in February 2019. The following month, his side drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient in front of 40 spectators in the fourth division. Their now record goalscorer, Natasha Thomas, was on the bench. In 2025, she went on to represent Jamaica at international level, having scored over 150 goals for Ipswich. Two Covid-19 curtailed seasons and three heart-breaking title pushes later, the Tractor Girls returned to Portman Road in March 2025 where they broke the league attendance during their 3-1 win against Plymouth Argyle in front of 10,807. Sheehan himself was unpaid during his first season-and-a-half. The players trained just twice a week, led by voluntary staff. The dedicated boss once drove a minibus for an U21's friendly match to Sunderland, where he could only pull together a team of just nine they train four times a week, have tailored strength and conditioning training, and are fed nutritionally balanced meals. 'Remarkable' Sheehan said: "It's been an incredible journey. "The growth, the success, the development of the group, the club and the staff. "The experiences that we've had along the way have been remarkable. " 'Four years thinking of this day' Captain Maria Boswell will be the player to lift the league title on Sunday. The 22-year old, who lives with teammates Sophie Peskett and Kyra Robertson, has been part of a rock-solid defence that has only conceded 10 goals in the league this season. Both her and her teammates are still part-time footballers, but promotion will mean going full-time. She has dreamt of this moment since coming into the first team four years ago. "I've spent four years thinking of this day. I've thought about it every single day; what the feeling is going to be like," she said."You don't get opportunities like this very often, to celebrate promotion to the Championship. "I can't put it into words how much it would mean to be with the girls, on the pitch and lift that trophy." 'No room for error' in tier three? The Tractor Girls have come close to promotion each season at third tier level, but have fallen at the final hurdle. On previous attempts, they finished second, third and fourth. Until the 2023/24 season, the winner of the Southern Premier Division then had to face off in a promotion-deciding fixture with the Northern division's winners. Sheehan said previously it gave "little to no room for error", requiring "near-perfect seasons".He added: "We have had sour experiences, some trauma and some difficult moments. We've been close, but have fallen short. "On two separate occasions, we have won 10 to 11 games in a row in this division, and still fallen short. It's been tough; lots of low points where you wonder what else you can do". Within these seasons, the Tractor Girls have had some key moments, including record-breaking FA Cup runs, hosting WSL side West Ham United at their home in Felixstowe, as well as two trips to giants Manchester City. The perfect end to a near-perfect season? Ipswich set the standard in the league this year, slipping to defeat only twice and conceding just 10 goals. Their main rivals this season have been Essex side Hashtag United, who are three points behind them going into the final round of fixtures. A nine-game unbeaten run at the start of the season saw Sheehan's side set the pace, including a 4-0 league cup win over East Anglian rivals Norwich City at Carrow Road. Hashtag were one of only two teams to beat Town, which didn't come until early March. Ipswich were the form scorers in the league, and have netted 81 times so far. Town recorded eye catching results including 11-0 and 13-0 wins over MK Dons, a 7-0 win over Cheltenham and a 6-0 win over Billericay.

Promotion-chasing Ipswich delay 'extra bit of elation'

When Ipswich Town boss Joe Sheehan speaks of his team putting themselves "in a good position", it is surely one of the under-statements of the Sunday's 11-0 win at MK Dons - when Sophie Peskett scored six of their goals - it would be impossible for Town to be any closer to winning the Women's National League Southern Premier title and are three points clear of Hashtag United with both teams having one game left to play and their goal difference is +36 superior to their rivals."It's a big win for us and one we needed, but nothing's done yet or confirmed so there's maybe a little bit of mixed feelings," Sheehan told BBC Radio Suffolk."I'm feeling really pleased that we managed to win the game convincingly and put ourselves in a good position going into our final game but until it is mathematically confirmed, I will hold off that extra bit of elation until we get over the line."Ipswich have won 16 of their 21 games, losing only twice, and have scored 81 goals in the process, conceding only now has 20 goals during the campaign and Jamaica international Natasha Thomas has 16 following a brace against the Dons. "It was a really composed, committed, professional performance, some really well worked goals, six for 'Pesk' which is remarkable, and a collective team effort that has put us in a really strong position," said Sheehan."We have to enjoy the feeling that we have currently but we still have one game to go and want to make sure we end the season with a convincing performance that hopefully results in a final-day win. "The message (to the players) will be to enjoy the result but nothing is official, nothing is confirmed."Ipswich have to wait until 27 April for the chance to round things off in style when they take on Cheltenham Town on their home ground in will be the climax of a season which began with a total commitment to following the example of the Ipswich men's team, who won back-to-back promotions in 2023 and 2024, and reaching the second tier of the women's game, the said: "They are a joy to work with. There's a special connection with staff and players. Togetherness is a huge pillar in our environment, it underpins everything we do each day. Hopefully in a couple of weeks' time we'll get our just rewards."It's been a long process, lots of years of laying the groundwork and foundations. We'd like to think we're in a really strong position, we've really attacked it, we've conducted ourselves impeccably, we've established some really strong momentum, won some important games and responded well when things haven't gone our way."So how will he approach what is sure to be a memorable day against Cheltenham?"Going to celebrate won't be my particular focus, it will be about preparing to perform and try and win the game and do ourselves proud," he added. "We've been really consistent all season and won't be stopping now. It'll be a big occasion and a big crowd but one we're determined to give a really strong performance for."

Ipswich must keep 'foot on gas' in title race

Ipswich Town boss Joe Sheehan has urged his team not to regard their superior goal difference as a buffer as they look to seal promotion to the are three points clear at the top of Women's National League Southern Premier with two games to play and their goal difference of plus 60 is 27 better than rivals Hashtag side were beaten 1-0 at Watford last weekend, only their second league defeat of the campaign, but travel to bottom club MK Dons on Sunday - a team that have only managed one point from 20 games and let in 106 goals."With the goal difference, we probably need to win one more game and we don't circle what game we think that's going to happen (in)," he told BBC Radio Suffolk."I don't think we're seeing a team at the moment that is conscious of the position and therefore hiding within themselves." Hashtag are the only other team, apart from Watford, to beat Ipswich this term but they have the harder run-in - and only the champions will go up to the women's second tier for next the game at MK Dons, Town will be at home to eighth-placed Cheltenham Town on 27 April, while Hashtag must take on Exeter City and Oxford United in their final two matches, who are third and fifth."We've almost earned the opportunity to get beat but that doesn't give us any reason to be complacent or take our foot off the gas. We want to try and perform and win all of our games that we play," said Sheehan. "We will prepare to face the best possible version of MK Dons and I won't have anyone tell me their league position or how they've been getting on because our focus will be on giving them the respect they absolutely deserve. It's up to us to perform and do all we can to try and win that game."Without emphasising what might be at stake or what we're trying to do, it's just about preparing to try and be good on that day. Hopefully with that kind of process, the players are calm and prepared and consistent and our ability and preparation will shine through when it matters on game day."
