'White British' gives the game away about racism in the UK

The point was well made. X has been a hotbed of revisionism and rescrambled hot takes the moment what had been clear to so many — that this was an act of Islamist terrorism — was almost certainly not. Joey Barton, for instance, was quick to edit out the sentences 'Everyone knows what's going on. When will it stop?' from his tweet expressing condolences to the victims, as soon as he became aware the suspect was white. 'All the people complaining that the police have said the Liverpool attacker was white British are the same people who made it necessary for the police to say he was white British,' so tweeted 'Parody Keir Starmer' on X last night, after social media's reaction to the awful incident in which dozens were injured but — so far at least — miraculously nobody was killed. You can argue the police's actions in quickly issuing the clarifying description of the suspect's skin tone prevented another case of anti-Islam vengeance being wreaked on innocents, as happened in the aftermath of the Southport murders of little girls. Sadly, that argument would almost certainly be correct. But, all the same, it sets a terrible precedent. The fact the driver of that car was white is of zero relevance to understanding what happened and why. What if the driver had been a brown person? What if the next suspect in a public incident of this scale is a brown person? How do the police deal with that one? Suggested Reading Apparently I hate Winston Churchill Michaela Makusha The rush to judgement is the story of human nature, but the way that judgement is forced upon us within social media feeds, together with the ready incitement of how to respond to it, is the story of our times. An overload of immediate information, readily packaged and contextualised on social media by those with an agenda — sometimes blatantly, sometimes with a nudge and a wink — for consumption by an audience all too easily triggered in their state of shock and anger; this is how mosques end up being firebombed. So little of the available evidence in this story makes any sense, and speculation without any real insight into the suspect's motives is both pointless and potentially illegal, in as much as it risks contempt of court. But it is safe to wonder aloud what this single descriptor — white British — felt so necessary to reveal in order to stop a greater harm, says about us. I write this all as someone who is white British. How gratifying to know that that's enough to put me in the clear for an act of terrorism in this country. Worrying, though — depressingly so — for anyone who happens to be non-white British. It is such an obvious point to make, but it needs making: the only society in which releasing that description makes any sense whatsoever, is a racist society. As a friend said to me this morning, in a comment fully loaded with irony: interesting how nobody rushed off to throw bricks at churches when they found out he was white. Barton embarrasses himself again by reviving French accent in bizarre interview

Joey Barton once again had fans reaching for the mute button after deciding to revive his bizarre French accent on a visit to former club Marseille at the weekend. The 42-year-old has been out of a job since being sacked as manager of Bristol Rovers in 2023, but was in the headlines in March after being found guilty of assaulting his wife at their family home. Barton has also been involved in a bitter dispute with former Lioness Eni Aluko, who won the first stage of a High Court libel claim against the ex-Manchester City midfielder after he claimed her father was financially corrupt and that her private education made her a 'hypocrite'. However, Barton was invited to take part in a Marseille legends match at the Stade Velodrome on Friday night to celebrate the club's 125th anniversary. And while Robert Pires, Franck Ribery, Samir Nasri and Didier Drogba were involved in the star-studded event, Barton has gone viral for all the wrong reasons with his toe-curling interview before kick-off. After joining Marseille back in 2012, Barton announced his arrival to the French media by speaking with an accent that appeared straight out of BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!. Though Barton was widely ridiculed for the strange press conference at the time, the former England international decided to resurrect the accent again on Friday when asked about his infamous run-in with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. 'It was a big game, Le Classique, and Ibrahimovic was very physical with Nicolas Nkoulou and the coach said to me that I must defend him,' Barton explained. 'He fouled, he fouled and the referee… [gestures blowing a whistle]. 'After after, he speak very badly to me, Zlatan, he speak very bad. 'And it was on the camera so everywhere I go, the Marseille fans say, 'Hey, Barton!'. They don't remember the football, but only the nose.' Unsurprisingly, clips of Barton's interview have received a mixed reception on social media, with many fans calling out the former Newcastle, QPR and Burnley man over his 'embarrassing' behaviour. 'Absolutely embarrassing, that,' @ToonMouthTyne wrote on X. 'Joey's been watching 'Allo 'Allo! all week,' @paulfinlay23903 responded. Another fan, @TSnozzle, said: 'Sounded like me in GCSE French.' Several other users on X questioned why Barton had been asked to feature in the legends match in the first place given he only spent one, largely uneventful, season with Marseille. 'He spent one season on loan haha what the f*** is this,' @BillyRayMoore said. 'Why the hell is he playing in a legends game for Marseille. Is he a Marseille legend?' fodenthegoat_47 wrote. 'The term 'legend' gets thrown about far too often. It has lost all meaning,' @fodenthegoat_47 replied. Last year, Barton sensationally threw his hat in the ring to manage Marseille, before Jean-Louis Gasset was eventually chosen to replace Gennaro Gattuso. 'I am ready,' Barton responded to reports of Gattuso being under pressure at the time. Roberto De Zerbi replaced Gasset as Marseille's head coach ahead of the 2024/25 season and the Italian has enjoyed an impressive debut season in France, with the side sitting second heading into their two remaining matches in Ligue 1. Liverpool fans told 'not to celebrate Premier League title win' in pathetic Joey Barton rant

Liverpool is still basking in the glow of the weekend, when fans were able to partake in proper title celebrations for the first time in 35 years. For some reason, Joey Barton has taken it upon himself to police that joy. The disgraced former player and manager, who was found guilty in March of assaulting his wife by pushing her to the floor and kicking her in the head, has never been shy about venting controversial opinions. But his quest for relevance has seen him come out with a number of controversial and inflammatory takes, the latest of which concerns the extent of the celebrations after Liverpool won the Premier League. Despite the fact that Arne Slot has completed the work of Jurgen Klopp, finally giving Anfield its long-awaited chance to party, Barton has decided that supporters have gone too far. But it's no surprise that an outpouring of happiness has upset such a fundamentally angry man. "It's a funny thing isn't it, that they almost feel like they've won something," sneered Barton on the ironically-named Common Sense Podcast. "You haven't really, have you? "You haven't physically won anything yourself. The way some of you are going on is like you've actually won something like that, like it's actually done something for your life. "A football fan, you invest in the team and results and all that, I get that. But then, you actually haven't achieved anything, it's not like you can put on your CV [resume] "was a Liverpool fan when we won the league in 24/25"". Barton has clearly missed the point entirely. Shockingly, the celebrations among Liverpool fans are unrelated to any hopes that their resumes might now be boosted. As another of the podcasters points out, perhaps Barton's latest outburst can be explained by his Everton loyalties. But even allowing for that, it's still just a mind-numbingly stupid thing to say. For one thing, countless people within the game have acknowledged the ability of fans to help turn the tide, particularly at Anfield. But even if the supporters played no part whatsoever, they have every right to be happy when their team wins. That's the entire basis of sport. If nobody cared who won, nobody would watch. By extension, nobody would know Joey Barton, and he wouldn't now have his career as a professional chancer. Despite that, you'd still have to conclude that football needs fans to survive. Fortunately, nobody is going to let Barton's opinion on their celebrations dampen the mood. There will be an incredible atmosphere at Liverpool's remaining four games of the Premier League season, culminating in a parade that will see the city turned into a sea of red. Barton will just have to shut his curtains and keep quiet. If he did that more often, there'd be another cause for celebration.

Joey Barton's wild Kevin De Bruyne teeth theory given verdict by top dentist

Former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton sensationally claimed that a procedure Kevin De Bruyne had on his teeth is the reason behind the Manchester City star's injury troubles Joey Barton's bizarre claim that Kevin de Bruyne's dental work is to blame for his injury woes at Manchester City has been dismissed by a leading dentist. The former City and Newcastle midfielder made the wild declaration on his podcast, 'Common Sense with Joey Barton '. De Bruyne, 33, was last on the treatment table in October of this season after he was kept out of action due to a hamstring issue. However, he did miss a hefty chunk of last season through injury. ‌ Barton, without any apparent expertise in dentistry or medicine, argued that the Belgian star's troubles are linked to dental procedures. "When you get your teeth done, your body compensates for your mouth. You sleep, you run, your body compensates for your mouth," Barton, 42, said on his podcast. "You get the teeth done and it realigns your bite. Once you realign your bite starts to offset your spine, your spinal column and spinal cord and before you know it, a domino effect goes down your spine, causing a chain reaction into your soft tissue. "Before you know it, your body starts coming apart. Kevin De Bruyne's problem at Manchester City was getting his f*****g teeth done. Every player I see gets their teeth done in a short period of time? Soft tissue injuries start happening further down the chain." ‌ Dr Gizem Seymenoglu, a GDC (General Dental Council) registered dentist at Longevita Dental, has weighed in on the debate about De Bruyne's teeth, dismissing claims that his dental work could cause injury or alter his bite, reports the Manchester Evening News. Dr Gizem said: "I don't agree with what Joey had to say about Kevin's teeth. His results actually seem quite nice. It looks like he's had a minimally invasive treatment, more like veneers on his front six teeth, while the posterior teeth were likely whitened. "The only thing we can confidently say by looking at his older photos is that his teeth looked inwardly inclined, so he possibly had a narrower bite, but that alone wouldn't cause any problems in his physicality." ‌ Moreover, Dr Gizem noted that De Bruyne's previous dental condition might have been improved by the treatments. "In fact, his older teeth looked quite worn down, and by increasing their height through restorations, he could have actually improved the functionality and effectiveness of his bite," she said. "As can be seen now, his teeth appear more upright and have a more forward inclination." ‌ Finally, Dr Gizem addressed the broader question of whether dental misalignment could lead to physical ailments. "Let's say we change a patient's bite by raising it," she said. "Creating a bite outside the patient's physiological limits will result in pain in the joints and muscles. There will be a functional disorder - the patient won't be able to chew or speak properly. Also, their teeth will hit against each other, and it will become harder for them to pronounce certain words while talking. "But the thing in Kevin's case is that we simply cannot tell if he had a problem before or if he has a problem now. We've heard him speak recently, and to me, he sounds like he used to."
