The event, held from July 28 to 31 at the Palais des Nations, gathers over 110 parliamentary leaders worldwide. Johari is set to speak at the General Debate session on July 29, themed 'A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All.' His address will focus on advocating for an international system rooted in justice, rule of law, and strong parliamentary institutions. 'He will emphasise Malaysia's firm position on the continuous suffering in Gaza and urge global parliaments to act when humanitarian principles are violated,' stated the Office of the Speaker. The conference, co-organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations, serves as a key platform for legislative leaders to collaborate on global peace efforts. As AIPA President, Johari will also hold bilateral talks with counterparts, including Iran, to strengthen UN Charter adherence and international law. GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul will underscore Malaysia's position on the ongoing oppression of the Palestinian people in Gaza during his attendance at the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, to be held from July 28 to 31 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. In a statement issued today, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives said Johari is scheduled to deliver a speech during the General Debate session themed 'A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All' on July 29. According to the statement, Johari will raise Malaysia's voice in advocating for an international system grounded in the rule of law, the principles of justice and resilient and independent parliamentary institutions. 'He will also emphasise Malaysia's firm stance on the continuous oppression of the Palestinian people in Gaza and call upon parliaments around the world not to remain silent when the fundamental principles of humanity and international law are violated,' the statement read. The conference, jointly organised by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations (UN), brings together more than 110 parliamentary speakers from across the globe. This year, legislative leaders are expected to engage directly with heads of international organisations, academics, civil society representatives and the media, making the forum a strategic platform to coordinate collective action towards global peace, justice and prosperity. Meanwhile, Johari, who also serves as President of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several legislative leaders from around the world, including from Iran, to discuss efforts to strengthen the United Nations Charter and international law in pursuit of global peace and security. 'This inter-parliamentary dialogue is a vital platform for building open channels of communication, aimed at peaceful resolutions based on the UN Charter. 'As Chair of AIPA, the Malaysian Parliament remains steadfast in voicing support for the sovereignty of the Palestinian people and will continue to bring ASEAN's voice to the international stage as a bloc that upholds peace, dialogue and peaceful resolution based on humanitarian principles and international law,' the statement added.

The programme focuses on developing leadership qualities, fostering patriotism, and promoting civic responsibility among youth. Participants will engage in simulated parliamentary sessions, guided tours, and dialogues with MPs and young leaders. 'The programme will run in phases from July 21 to December 4, 2025, aligning with the Dewan Rakyat's sitting schedule,' the statement said. King consents to Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Act 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia has given his royal assent to the Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Act 2025, which was passed during the First Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament held from Feb 3 to March 25. Dewan Rakyat speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul informed the House of the royal consent before the Minister's Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. The Act was enacted to provide for matters relating to the capture, transportation, utilisation, and permanent storage of carbon dioxide. It also aims to reduce the impact of climate change and catalyse the development of the industry as a new source of economic growth. In the same sitting, Johari also welcomed participants of the 2025 Parliamentary School Programme, comprising school head prefects from Perlis. 'This programme is one of Parliament's initiatives to provide exposure to the country's parliamentary democracy system and to nurture leadership qualities among future leaders,' he said. - Bernama
