‘In my head, I believe…': John Abraham shares why he's not fully convinced about doing OTT projects

The OTT platform has emerged as a top choice for both audiences and major celebrities, with many big names making their digital debuts. However, it appears that actor John Abraham isn't in a rush to join the trend. In a recent interview, the Dhoom star shared his perspective on the matter and said, "In my head, I believe, I was made for the big screen." John Abraham on why he is not doing OTT projects In a conversation with Hindustan Times, John Abraham expressed his reservations about working in the OTT space. He reportedly pointed out that venturing into the digital medium requires a large operational setup and a dedicated team, yet creators often don't retain ownership of the intellectual property. According to him, the revenue earned is usually offset by operational costs, making the effort less worthwhile. He added that most people involved in OTT would agree with this perspective, which is why he doesn't find it practical to pursue web series at the moment. However, he acknowledged that he would be open to producing a web series if he came across a compelling story that genuinely resonated with him. The Vedaa actor clarified that his interest would stem from a desire to share a meaningful narrative, rather than to pursue it as a business venture. This, he explained, is why he has not taken on any OTT projects as a producer so far. As for appearing in web content as an actor, John Abraham maintained that while he wouldn't rule it out entirely, he currently has no intention of doing a series or an original film for an OTT platform. He stated that his focus remains on the big screen, which he believes is where he truly belongs. Although he holds great respect for digital platforms, especially given the high-quality international offerings and standout Indian productions like Paatal Lok, he doesn't yet see himself fitting into that space. On the work front, John Abraham has teamed up with Rohit Shetty for his upcoming project. The yet-to-be-titled film is a gripping thriller based on the life of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. The story promises to be intense, highlighting key moments from Maria's career, from his investigations into the 1993 Bombay blasts and the 26/11 attacks to his confrontations with the underworld.

John Abraham On Why He Won't Work On OTT: 'Don't See Sense...'

Last Updated: John Abraham's The Diplomat is successful on OTT, but he prefers the big screen due to OTT's extensive setup and overheads. John Abraham's The Diplomat has found a new wave of success ever since it released on OTT. The digital debut has helped it reach an even broader audience. With OTT platforms becoming a preferred choice for both audiences and A-list actors alike, it's clear the medium is booming. That said, John seems content staying on the big screen for now, with no interest in diving into the world of web series. Explaining the reason behind it, John Abraham tells Hindustan Times, 'To do OTT, you need a very big office setup. You need a lot of people working towards something, where you don't even own the IP of. You make a commission from the series and that goes into your overheads. Anybody who's doing OTT today, they'll tell you absolutely the same thing. So, I don't see sense in breaking sweat on doing these series." That said, he's open to the idea, badmitting that if a compelling series comes his way and sparks his interest as a producer, he wouldn't hesitate to get on board. 'I would love to because I want to tell that story, not because I want to make a business model out of it. So, that's one reason why I'm not doing this as a producer yet." When asked if he would ever act in OTT, the actor responds, 'Never say never, but at this point of time, I do not want to come on OTT as an actor for a series or an original film. I want to come on the big screen. In my head, I believe I was made for the big screen. I have a lot of respect for OTT channels because most of the content, at least internationally, and so much of the Indian content like Paatal Lok is outstanding. I have so much of respect for the space, but I don't see myself yet in it." On the work front, John Abraham last appeared in The Diplomat, alongside a talented cast which includes Sharib Hashmi, Sadia Khateeb and more. The actor wears many hats — he's the owner of the ISL football team NorthEast United, a film producer behind projects like Vicky Donor and Madras Cafe, and a passionate biker, which is a whole world of its own. The web medium has become the go-to platform with even the biggest stars entering the space today. However, the actor has no plans to foray into the space any time soon. Explaining why, John Abraham says, 'To do OTT, you need a very big office setup. You need a lot of people working towards something, where you don't even own the IP of. So, I don't see sense in breaking sweat on doing these series.' Although, he admits that if he comes across a good series that appeals to him to produce, he'd take it up: 'I would love to because I want to tell that story, not because I want to make a business model out of it. So, that's one reason why I'm not doing this as a producer yet.' But what about foraying in the web space as an actor? "Never say never, but at this point of time, I do not want to come on OTT as an actor for a series or an original film. I want to come on the big screen. In my head, I believe I was made for the big screen. I have a lot of respect for OTT channels because most of the content, at least internationally, and so much of the Indian content like Paatal Lok is outstanding. I have so much of respect for the space, but I don't see myself yet in it,' he responds.
