Bob Odenkirk kept training since 'Nobody' for bigger sequel

1 of 5 | Bob Odenkirk, seen at the 2025 Tony Awards in New York City, returns in "Nobody 2." File Photo by Angelina Katsanis/UPI | License Photo July 17 (UPI) -- Universal Pictures released a behind-the-scenes look at Nobody 2 on Thursday. The film opens Aug. 15 in theaters. In the featurette, star Bob Odenkirk tells viewers he continued training after he wrapped the first Nobody, which opened in 2021. For that film, he trained two years with Daniel Bernhardt and the 87eleven Action Design team. On the set of Nobody 2, Odenkirk is seen offering to do extra takes and lifting weights on the set claiming, "Come on, that's not hard." Bernhardt confirmed that Odenkirk was ready for more in the sequel. "Bob was already on a whole different level," Bernhardt said. "It's a whole different game now." Producer David Leitch, who co-created the John Wick franchise and has directed Atomic Blonde, The Fall Guy and more, said Nobody 2 took advantage of Odenkirk's new skills. "When you get an actor that does that and immerses themselves, it allows you to create action that you couldn't create for some other actor who doesn't have the discipline," Leitch said. "We can amp up the level in this film." Odenkirk returns as Hutch, a retired assassin who takes his family on vacation and stumbles upon another criminal operation. He fights bad guys on a boat, in an arcade and an elevator, among other action settings.

AI video becomes more convincing, rattling creative industry

Agencies Gone are the days of six-fingered hands or distorted facesAI-generated video is becoming increasingly convincing, attracting Hollywood, artists, and advertisers, while shaking the foundations of the creative industry. To measure the progress of AI video, you need only look at Will Smith eating spaghetti. Since 2023, this unlikely sequenceentirely fabricated has become a technological benchmark for the industry. Two years ago, the actor appeared blurry, his eyes too far apart, his forehead exaggeratedly protruding, his movements jerky, and the spaghetti didn't even reach his mouth. The version published a few weeks ago by a user of Google's Veo 3 platform showed no apparent flaws whatsoever. 'Every week, sometimes every day, a different one comes out that's even more stunning than the next,' said Elizabeth Strickler, a professor at Georgia State University. Between Luma Labs' Dream Machine launched in June 2024, OpenAI's Sora in December, Runway AI's Gen-4 in March 2025, and Veo 3 in May, the sector has crossed several milestones in just a few months. Runway has signed deals with Lionsgate studio and AMC Networks television vice president Michael Burns told New York Magazine about the possibility of using artificial intelligence to generate animated, family-friendly versions from films like the 'John Wick' or 'Hunger Games' franchises, rather than creating entirely new projects. 'Some use it for storyboarding or previsualization'steps that come before filming -- 'others for visual effects or inserts,' said Jamie Umpherson, Runway's creative director. Burns gave the example of a script for which Lionsgate has to decide whether to shoot a scene or not. To help make that decision, they can now create a 10-second clip 'with 10,000 soldiers in a snowstorm.' That kind of pre-visualization would have cost millions before. In October, the first AI feature film was released -- 'Where the Robots Grow' -- an animated film without anything resembling live action Alejandro Matamala Ortiz, Runway's co-founder, an AI-generated feature film is not the end goal, but a way of demonstrating to a production team that 'this is possible.' Still, some see an opportunity. In March, startup Staircase Studio made waves by announcing plans to produce seven to eight films per year using AI for less than $500,000 each, while ensuring it would rely on unionized professionals wherever possible. 'The market is there,' said Andrew White, co-founder of small production house Indie Studios. People 'don't want to talk about how it's made,' White pointed out. 'That's inside baseball. People want to enjoy the movie because of the movie.' But White himself refuses to adopt the technology, considering that using AI would compromise his creative process. Jamie Umpherson argues that AI allows creators to stick closer to their artistic vision than ever before, since it enables unlimited revisions, unlike the traditional system constrained by costs. 'I see resistance everywhere' to this movement, observed Georgia State's Strickler. This is particularly true among her students, who are concerned about AI's massive energy and water consumption as well as the use of original works to train models, not to mention the social impact. But refusing to accept the shift is 'kind of like having a business without having the internet,' she said. 'You can try for a little while.'

'Severance' season 3 gets update from Apple TV Plus exec — and it's a bummer

"Severance" season 3 just got an update from an Apple TV Plus executive, and now I'm seriously concerned. "Severance" season 2 just scored the most 2025 Emmy nominations of any show — 27 in total. That should be reason to celebrate, but then Apple TV Plus head of programming Matt Cherniss had to pour cold water on the joy. "I think everyone's just going to take a deep breath and enjoy where we're at," Cherniss told Variety in an interview about the sci-fi show's Emmy successes. "I know they're going as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like 'Severance' has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they're on it, and I think I'm feeling really good about where we're at.' Now, that does seem to end on a positive note, but Cherniss's next comments did little to assuage my concerns. "No one wants it to be another three-year gap," he continued. "I don't believe that we have a production start date yet, but we're moving in that direction." Call me crazy, but those comments seem to indicate that we'll be waiting a long time for more "Severance." To be fair, nobody has been promising a quick turnaround. Back in March, executive producer Ben Stiller told the ITV morning show "This Morning" that "Severance" season 3 is coming "as fast as possible," but not that it'd be here any time soon. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "I would love to tell you how long you'll have to wait," Stiller told show presenter Ben Shephard, "but the goal is definitely not to wait between, you know, [season] 2 and [season] 3." Apple TV Plus gives you access to amazing originals with exciting new shows dropping all summer long. Based on Cherniss's comments, though, it doesn't sound like that goal is being met. It's worth noting that Cherniss's comments contradict what we've heard from Stiller to date, at least to a degree. In January, Stiller gave an update on season 3, saying that the creative team was working on the new season. A month later, in February, Stiller repeated his insistence that "Severance" was already back in production, just before Apple officially greenlit season 3. But Cherniss just said that the show doesn't even have a production start date yet. So, someone here either isn't right, or there's been some miscommunication. Either way, it seems like season 3 is doomed to repeat the biggest mistake of season 2, and take too long a break between seasons. Then again, season 2 just took home 27 Emmy nominations, so maybe Stiller and Apple TV Plus know what they're doing. John Wick Hex will be delisted from all platforms on July 17

John Wick Hex , a stylish and well-received game based on the John Wick movies, will soon no longer be available to purchase. In a statement on the title's Steam page, publisher Big Fan Games says it will be delisted from all platforms on July 17. After that date, the publisher said, those who have already acquired the tactical action game from a digital storefront will still be able to download it. Physical console copies will still work too. Big Fan didn't provide an explanation as to why John Wick Hex is being removed from storefronts, though licensing issues may be at play. Mike Bithell, creative director at developer Bithell Games, said on BlueSky he was "unable to shed any light" on the reason for the delisting. "This one was a weird journey. [It] initially polarized folks, but now it's one of the consistent favourites people wanna chat with me about when I'm doing public stuff," wrote Bithell , who came to prominence with Thomas Was Alone and whose most recently released game was Tron Catalyst . "My first disappeared game, a weird feeling." It's always a shame to see a game vanish from storefronts. It's terrible for game preservation, and it means those who made the game will never be able to find a larger audience for it. You still have a couple of days to pick up John Wick Hex , however. It's on sale at Humble , where Steam keys are available for $4, or 80 percent off. If you buy something through a link in this article, we may earn commission.
