Groundbreaking new treatment for aggressive breast cancer has 100% survival rate
Hope is on the horizon for patients with aggressive, inherited breast cancers. A recent clinical trial, led by researchers at Cambridge University, explored the effects of combining chemotherapy with the targeted cancer drug olaparib before surgery. Every patient who received this protocol survived the critical three-year post-treatment period. Advertisement 3 BRCA cancers are notoriously aggressive and difficult to treat. Vasyl – The research, published in Nature Communications, suggests this preemptive, two-part approach could be the most effective plan of treatment for early-stage breast cancer linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Breast cancer or BRCA genes are present in every cell of the human body. When functioning, BRCA1 and BRCA2 repair DNA and prevent cancerous changes. However, when a mutation compromises these genes, cancer risk increases. Inheriting this damaged DNA can increase the risk for breast and ovarian cancer in women and breast and prostate cancer in men. Advertisement BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are more common in young women, and these mutations increase cancer risk by as much as 84%. Six percent of all breast cancer patients carry BRCA gene mutations, but in patients under 45, roughly 12% carry the gene. BRCA cancers are notoriously aggressive and difficult to treat. In 2013, Angelina Jolie, who carries the faulty BRCA1 gene, made headlines when she underwent a preventative double mastectomy. As a result of the procedure, Jolie, who lost her own mother to breast cancer, saw her chances of developing breast cancer drop from 87 percent to less than 5 percent. Advertisement The current protocol for treating BRCA cancers includes shrinking the tumour using chemotherapy and immunotherapy, before removing it through surgery. 3 Angelina Jolie, who carries the faulty BRCA1 gene, underwent a preventative double mastectomy. Getty Images The first three years after surgery — when there is the greatest risk of relapse or death — are critical. The trial recruited patients from across the UK and aimed to test the efficacy of combining chemotherapy with olaparib before surgery and carefully timing when these treatments were administered. Advertisement 'It is rare to have a 100% survival rate in a study like this and for these aggressive types of cancer.' Professor Jean Abraham The study revealed that allowing a 48-hour 'gap' between chemotherapy and olaparib treatments led to more positive outcomes. Researchers believe this interval allows the patient's bone marrow to recover from chemo while leaving tumor cells receptive to olaparib. Olaparib, sold under the brand name Lynparza, is typically taken for 12 months post-surgery. However, trial patients took the tablets pre-surgery for a period of 12 weeks. The survival rate among the control group who received chemotherapy alone was 88%. Of these 45 patients, nine relapsed and six died within three years of surgery. In contrast, there was a 100% survival rate among the 39 patients who received chemotherapy followed by olaparib. Of this cohort, only one patient relapsed in the three years following surgery. 'It is rare to have a 100% survival rate in a study like this and for these aggressive types of cancer,' said trial lead Professor Jean Abraham. 3 Olaparib, sold under the brand name Lynparza, is typically taken for 12 months post-surgery. However, trial patients took the tablets pre-surgery for a period of 12 weeks. AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals Advertisement 'We're incredibly excited about the potential of this new approach, as it's crucial that we find a way to treat and hopefully cure patients who are diagnosed with BRCA1 and BRCA2-related cancers.' Compared to current care protocols, the two-pronged approach of chemo and olaparib pre-surgery offers a more cost-effective and less toxic treatment for patients. Abrahams and his team are planning the next research phase, which will aim to replicate their results in a larger study. Advertisement They are hopeful their findings can and will be applied to treat other cancers caused by mutated BRCA genes, including some ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among US women after skin cancer. About 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Though breast cancer starts in a localized part of the breast tissue, it can spread to other areas of the body, significantly decreasing rates of survival. Survival rates among breast cancer patients whose cancer is detected before it spreads are high, between 86% and 89%. Yet if the cancer is detected after the cancer cells have migrated, that number drops to 31%.

Brad Pitt's girlfriend Ines de Ramon has been a 'calming and supportive' presence in his life, according to a source The couple are in a 'really solid place,' the source tells PEOPLE exclusively The Oscar winner and the jewelry industry exec have been dating since 2022Brad Pitt's girlfriend Ines de Ramon has been a 'calming and supportive presence' after the actor finalized his divorce from Angelina Jolie. 'There's no pressure between them,' a source tells PEOPLE exclusively. 'She gives him space when he needs it, but is always there when it counts.' The Oscar winner, 61, and the jewelry industry executive, 32 — who have been dating since 2022 — are in a 'really solid place,' the insider says. 'Ines has brought a lot of peace into Brad's life,' the source adds. 'Their relationship has been easy and natural.' The Fight Club star finalized his lengthy divorce from the Maria actress, 49, in December 2024. Jolie had initially filed to dissolve their marriage in September 2016. The actors, who share six children — Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, Knox, 16, and Vivienne, also 16 — began dating in the mid-2000s and married in 2014. De Ramon quietly tied the knot in 2019 with Vampire Diaries actor Paul Wesley, but after more than three years of marriage, the couple split in 2022. PEOPLE first reported the news revealing that they had been living apart for several months. 'Ines encouraged Brad to move forward and focus on the future. She's grounded, drama-free, and just really good for him which is exactly what he needs at this stage,' says the source. Pitt spoke out for the first time about finalizing his divorce from Jolie after more than eight years of intense legal fighting. As the A-list actor sat down with GQ to discuss his upcoming racing movie F1 in a feature published Wednesday, May 28, the actor dismissed questions regarding whether he felt "relief" after he and Jolie reached a settlement in their divorce. 'No, I don't think it was that major of a thing," Pitt said. "Just something coming to fruition. Legally.' He also gave a rare glimpse of insight into his relationship with de Ramon when asked whether the move to make their first public-event appearance at a Formula 1 race was deliberate. Pitt laughed and told GQ, 'No, dude, it's not that calculated." 'If you're living, oh my God, how exhausting would that be? If you're living with making those kinds of calculations?" he added. "No, life just evolves. Relationships evolve.' Speaking of his time outside the spotlight, Pitt said, 'My personal life is always in the news. It's been in the news for 30 years, bro. Or some version of my personal life, let's put it that way.' Read the original article on People

Brad Pitt speaks for first time about bitter divorce from Angelina Jolie being finalised
The Bullet Train and Tomb Raider stars ended the dispute with an agreement earlier this year. Brad Pitt had spoken out for the first time on bitter divorce from Angelina Jolie. The Bullet Train and Tomb Raider stars ended the dispute with an agreement earlier this year Pitt, 61, tied the knot with Jolie, now 49, in 2014 after a whirlwind romance that began on the set of the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith back in 2005. The pair finally parted ways in 2016. The high-profile split led Jolie to file for divorce in the same year. A series of bitter disputes over custody and their business interests followed. Discussing the closure of his divorce proceedings, Pitt said: "No, I don't think it was that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally." The legal wrangles between the pair have included battles over their six children and the division of their shared assets, such as the Château Miraval winery located in France. They share six children: Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, both 16. Currently, Brad is living in Los Angeles with his partner, 32-year-old jewellery executive Ines de Ramon, Pitt previously discussed the relentless media attention he's faced in an interview with GQ, when he said: "It's been in the news for 30 years, bro. Or some version of my personal life, let's put it that way." When quizzed about whether their glamorous appearance at the 2024 British Grand Prix was a strategic move to promote his latest film F1, he dismissed the suggestion of any promotional intent. He remarked: "No, dude, it's not that calculated. If you're living, oh my God, how exhausting would that be? If you're living with making those kinds of calculations? No, life just evolves. Relationships evolve." Reflecting on his personal life, Pitt shared: "Mostly I feel pretty... my life is fairly contained. "It feels pretty warm and secure with my friends, with my loves, with my fam, with my knowledge of who I am, that, you know, it's like this fly buzzing around a little bit." The actor, who was once married to Jennifer Aniston until their split in 2005, seems to have found a sense of peace amidst the chaos of fame. When the divorce was finalised, Jolie's lawyer released a statement saying: "Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.' Lawyer James Simon added to the Associated Press: "More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. 'This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago.'

Brad Pitt calls ugly divorce battle with Angelina Jolie not ‘that major a thing', makes rare comment about girlfriend Ines de Ramon: ‘Nagging time suck'
Brad Pitt has been a free bird, at least legally, since his divorce with Angelina Jolie was finalized last December. However, the F1 star feels it's not much of a big deal and was just a legal hurdle that they overcame. In a new interview, Pitt made a rare mention of his love life, including ex-wife Jolie and girlfriend Ines de Ramon. 'No, I don't think it was that major of a thing. Just something coming to fruition. Legally,' Pitt said. He admitted that his personal life is always in the news, which has often bothered him. 'It's been in the news for 30 years, bro. Or some version of my personal life, let's put it that way,' added Pitt. In the interview with GQ, he continued, 'It's been an annoyance I've had to always deal with in different degrees, large and small, as I do the things I really want to do. So, it's always been this kind of nagging time suck or waste of time, if you let it be that, I don't know. I don't know.' Pitt claimed his life is 'contained' now, amid his relationship with Ines de Ramon, 32, a jewellery executive. 'Mostly I feel pretty…. My life is fairly contained. It feels pretty warm and secure with my friends, with my loves, with my fam, with my knowledge of who I am, that, you know, it's like this fly buzzing around a little bit,' Pitt added. He's been dating Ramon since 2022. Pitt and Jolie reached a divorce settlement last December, ending one of the longest and most contentious divorces in Hollywood history but not every legal issue between the two. The court filing said they gave up the right to any future spousal financial support. Jolie and Pitt were among Hollywood's most prominent pairings for 12 years, two of them as a married couple. The Oscar winners have six children together. Jolie filed for divorce in 2016, after a private jet flight from Europe during which she said Pitt physically abused her and their children. The FBI and child services officials investigated Pitt's actions on the flight. Two months later, the FBI released a statement saying it would not investigate further, and the US attorney did not bring charges. A judge in 2019 declared Jolie and Pitt divorced and single, but the splitting of assets and child custody needed to be settled separately. Both have been free to marry again since that declaration, but neither has. The marriage was the third for Jolie, who was previously married to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, and the second for Pitt, who was previously wed to Jennifer Aniston. During the long divorce fight, four of their children became adults, negating the need for a custody agreement for them. The only minors that remain are 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. Last year, one of their daughters, then known as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, successfully petitioned to remove Pitt's name from hers. Brad Pitt breaks silence on divorce from ex-wife Angelina Jolie as he dispells major rumour about girlfriend Ines de Ramon
Brad Pitt has broken his silence on his divorce from his ex-wife Angelina Jolie as he dispelled a major rumour about his girlfriend Ines de Ramon. On Wednesday, the 61-year-old Fight Club actor spoke to GQ magazine ahead of his forthcoming racing film F1. In his interview, Pitt appeared to downplay the end of Brangelina and said their demise was not "major". "No, I don't think it was that major of a thing," he said. "Just something coming to fruition. Legally." Pitt opened up about the struggles of his high-profile relationships being the subject of ruthless media attention for three decades, including his 12-year relationship with Jolie. 'My personal life is always in the news. It's been in the news for 30 years, bro. Or some version of my personal life, let's put it that way," he said. The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actor said "always deal(ing)" with the attention has been an "annoyance" of "different degrees." Despite the public exposure which he described as a "nagging time," Pitt said his life now mostly feels "fairly contained." He said he felt "warm and secure" with his friends, family and loved ones, but made no direct mention of his six children. Pitt and Jolie reached a divorce settlement in December following eight years of bitter legal battles over custody of their children and finances. The Benjamin Button star began dating 32-year-old de Ramon, a jewellery designer, in 2022. The couple attended the 2024 British Grand Prix together. Pitt denied the move was a stunt to garner publicity for his forthcoming racing movie, telling GQ it was "not that calculated". He said making such calculations would be "exhausting" and "life just evolves. Relationships evolve." De Ramon divorced The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley after three years of marriage last November. The pair don't share any children. Pitt and Jolie meanwhile share Maddox, 23, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. During their lengthy divorce proceedings, four of their six children became adults, which rendered the need for a custody agreement for them. Knox and Vivienne are the only two minors. The initial judge in their lawsuit, along with federal and Los Angeles County officials, granted Pitt equal custody of the children. A key point in the case was Jolie's sale of the couple's French winery Château Miraval to a third party. Pitt said her move was "vindictive" and sued her over it. Jolie filed a countersuit in which she alleged the actor psychically and verbally abused her and their children on a plane in 2016. Pitt strongly denied the allegations and said they were "another rehash that only harms the family". However, in 2017, he told GQ magazine he had a drinking problem at the time of the alleged incident but was sober and attending therapy. It's unclear what Pitt's relationship with his children is like, but there are major signs suggesting he's estranged from them. In January, People Magazine reported Pitt had minimal contact with the twins while he was in the throes of filming F1. According to sources, he has "virtually no contact" with his older adult children who wanted Jolie to "defend herself" during their divorce. Then months ago, Zahara officially dropped her father's surname and became Zahara Jolie instead of Zahara Jolie-Pitt. Shiloh quickly followed her sister and requested a legal name change to Shiloh Jolie as opposed to Shiloh Jolie-Pitt.
