Knicks-Pacers Game 1 Draws NBA's Biggest Audience in Nearly a Decade
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals between the New York Knicks and the Indiana Pacers was one for the ages. More NBA news: Spurs Preferred Plan For No. 2 Pick Revealed: Report It was arguably the best game of the year, and it ended with the Pacers coming back in dramatic fashion, as they've done all season long. With 4:55 left in the fourth quarter, the Knicks were up by 15 points and had a 99.7 percent chance to come away with the win. What happened next, no one but Pacer fans who have seen it time and time again can explain. The Pacers are the definition of never-say-die, and not only was the contest worth watching, but Game 1 was the most-watched Eastern Conference Finals opener since the Cleveland Cavaliers played the Boston Celtics on ABC in 2018. The Indiana Pacers celebrate a basket against the New York Knicks during overtime in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals of the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Madison Square Garden on May 21, 2025 in New York City. More Photo by"Wednesday's Pacers-Knicks NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 1 averaged a 3.5 rating and 6.6 million viewers across TNT and truTV, flat in ratings and up 2% in viewership from Pacers-Celtics on ESPN and ESPN2 last year (3.5, 6.4M) and the most-watched Game 1 of the ECF since Cavaliers-Celtics on ABC in 2018 (7.24M). It is also tied as the highest rated over that span," wrote Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch. More NBA news: Lakers Superstar Luka Doncic Reportedly Turning Page With Conditioning Plan Indiana's comeback victory, which peaked at 8.5 million viewers during the 11 PM ET quarter-hour, stands as the third most-watched conference finals opener since 2019 (out of 12 total). It trails only last year's Mavericks-Timberwolves and Lakers-Nuggets matchups, both of which aired on ESPN platforms in 2023 and drew 7.36 million viewers. Game 1 was arguably one of the most chaotic and thrilling contests of the postseason. Pacers guard Aaron Nesmith caught fire for Indiana, knocking down six three-pointers in under five minutes. The Knicks had a chance to seal it late, but OG Anunoby missed a critical free throw that would have pushed the lead to three. On the ensuing possession, Tyrese Haliburton came through in the clutch, drilling a game-tying two that added another chapter to his rising playoff legacy. In overtime, the two teams traded the lead several times before Indiana ultimately came out on top, snatching Game 1 right out of New York's hands. It felt like three games packed into one, and if there was any doubt about the intensity of this series, it just got erased. This matchup has already exceeded expectations. England Women's cricketers ‘do not have any fitness standards'
Charlotte Edwards, England's new women's head coach, has claimed there were no fitness standards in place when she took over. Edwards, who replaced Jon Lewis in the wake of the chastening Ashes defeat at the start of the year, said she refers to fitness as the 'F word' in training, but on the eve of her first match explained there was no framework in place. Conversations over fitness and athleticism became the spectre the team could not shake over the winter, after Alex Hartley claimed on-air during the T20 World Cup last autumn that some of her former team-mates were 'not fit enough'. Hartley named no specific players but Sophie Ecclestone refused to speak to the former international-turned pundit for an interview during the 16-0 Ashes humiliation in Australia. Lewis repeatedly denied his side had any fitness shortcomings, although acknowledged during the Ashes that Australia had superior 'athleticism', and instead attributed that to their better weather. 'I think clearly we had to touch on the fitness issue. I think when I came in, I said it's all about individual improvement for the first six months,' Edwards said ahead of her first match in charge against the West Indies, a T20 international at Canterbury on Wednesday. 'So before this World Cup [in India in October] it's about individuals improving as much as they can in that time. I'm not going to set fitness standards, because there haven't been any standards in place. 'So I felt like that would be defeating the object. But hopefully in 12 months' time, the players are very aware that there will be minimum fitness standards come this time next year, which the players will have to adhere to, there has to be more accountability in the area. 'But I've been so impressed with their standards, and the way they've gone about stuff and I couldn't be more impressed in that area.' Ecclestone was left out of Edwards' first squad for the series against the West Indies following a knee injury sustained at the Women's Premier League. It was decided the spinner would play for Lancashire to prepare best for the series against India later in the summer and the World Cup.

Shedeur Sanders drama fuels 40-percent spike in Friday night draft viewership
By falling to round five of the draft, Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders lost a lot of money. The league and its broadcast partners made it all back, and then some. Via Jon Lewis of the second night of the draft attracted an average audience of 7.3 million viewers across all platforms. It's a 40-percent increase over last year's Day 2 coverage. The record was set in 2020, with 8.2 million. That draft happened a little more than a month into the pandemic. After weeks of no sporting events, the draft became something/anything for people stuck at home to watch. On Friday night, ESPN exiled the draft coverage to ESPN2, to make room for an NBA playoff game. That probably was a win for ESPN2. There's a good chance more watched the draft on ESPN 2 than the basketball action on ESPN.

Former captain Charlotte Edwards named England women's head coach
Charlotte Edwards has agreed to take over as the new head coach of England Women after Jon Lewis was sacked in the aftermath of a painful Ashes whitewash. The England and Wales Cricket Board has moved swiftly to get her in, taking less than a fortnight to finalise the move. Edwards spent 20 years as an England international, captaining the side for 10 of those, and has built up a formidable coaching CV at home and abroad with a host of trophies at Southern Vipers, the inaugural Hundred title at Southern Brave and the Women's Premier League with Mumbai Indians. She had been linked with the job when Lewis was appointed in November 2022, but publicly withdrew from contention having concluded it was not the right time. There was no hint of a repeat on this occasion, with the 45-year-old making it clear after the 16-0 humiliation in Australia that she wished to play a part in helping her old team rebuild.
