Can the Eagles defense still fly high?

Yahoo Sports NFL analyst Nate Tice and NFL writer Charles McDonald discuss Philadelphia's approach with an up-and-coming young defense that lost a couple of key pieces following last season's Super Bowl run. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript Philadelphia Eagles, Charles, why do you have him as your number one defense? Other than that, they were the number one defense last year and they won the Super Bowl. And they, I mean, it's a pretty easy argument to make as well. It's easy to make, but it's also not quite the same defense, you know, they've lost some guys on the defensive line. They've lost Milton Williams, who signed that massive deal with New England. Josh Sweat is in Arizona, but you look at their defense, right? And it's just littered with first and second round picks all over the place, right? The defensive line still is, you know, all the Georgia guys, they've really started to develop. Jordan Davis, I think we'll see what happens this year. He's gotten into incredible shape. Contract year, Jordan Davis could be special. We'll see. Jaylen Carter, we know about that. But Nolan Smith, like when I was skimming through some of my stuff, he has really improved from where he was when he first got into the NFL. Like he was all over the place in the Super Bowl. You get to bring back Zach Vaughan. Like we're talking about a 7-2 Scott Bonner, who was an absolute assassin last year. And sometimes you get these years from linebackers where like, oh, they put up a lot of numbers, but it's pretty manufactured. No, he actually played really, really good football last year. And then we got Quinnen Mitchell on the outside, who's an absolute stud. Cooper DeJean, who's an absolute stud. But they have so many guys on this defense still. I still think they're going to be the best defense in the league because a lot of those guys are so young. Like a lot of these guys are still in their rookie deals or first or second year players. These guys are going to get better. So I'm really excited to see what the next step of all those guys they've drafted in the last two years looks like in year three, because there's hard proof of concept that these are potentially Pro Bowl talented NFL players and they're so young. I just want to see what's next for them. Close

Former Georgia DL Jordan Davis underwent major change ahead of 2025 NFL season

As NFL training camps kick off for the 2025 season, one player drawing significant attention is Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Jordan Davis. Fresh off a Super Bowl-winning campaign, the Eagles exercised Davis' fifth-year option, ensuring his tenure with the team extends through the 2026 season. Davis is part of a notable players of former Georgia Bulldogs who have found success with the Eagles, a trend that continues to be a storyline for the Philadelphia franchise. Davis says he has shed 26 pounds this offseason. Davis is now listed weight at 336 pounds, which is aimed at enhancing his performance and allowing him to play more snaps. A slimmer Davis should excel, particularly in pass-rushing situations. "Just putting in the work, putting in the work and being consistent," said Davis when asked about his transformation this offseason. "I'll say living better, more energy, greater focus, conditioning wise on the field. I feellike, you know, it takes me longer to really get tired." With the loss of key defensive linemen, Davis will be asked to do more than just be a run stuffer. During his 2024 season he had 27 total tackles and had a sack in the Super Bowl on Patrick Mahomes. If he can reach another level this season with his All-Pro teammate Jalen Carter, then they can be one of the most dominant duos in the NFL. Davis is one of eight Georgia Bulldogs on the Eagles, who open the 2025 NFL season against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Sept. 4.

Eagles DT Jordan Davis lost 26 pounds this offseason

Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis is hoping less is more this season. Reporters at Wednesday's opening practice of training camp noted that Davis looked slimmer than he did when the Eagles were winning the Super Bowl in New Orleans in February. Davis confirmed that was the case at a Thursday press conference and said he currently weighs 330 pounds, which is down 26 pounds from where he was playing last season. Davis said he thought it was time to make a change for both football and overall life reasons. He said it feels 'amazing' and that he believes he's still as powerful as he was at the higher weight. 'I'm still that Jordan Davis,' Davis said. 'I'm still gonna be that anchor. I'm still gonna be that same player. But knowing that with this new weight, I can do a lot more. I can move a lot more on passing reps. I'm gonna be expected to add that. And that's just what's been communicated with me from the top down. And honestly, I'm here for it. I'm ready for it. I'm just ready to go.' The Eagles exercised Davis's fifth-year option for 2026, so he's not in a contract year, but adding pass rush potency to what he's brought to the table as a run-stuffing starter in the middle of the line might help speed up extension talks to keep him in Philadelphia.

Greylan James Warned His Ex-Girlfriend He Wrote a Song About Going to Her Wedding: 'Just Prepare Yourself' (Exclusive)

Greylan James loves a good secret, and the ACM Award-winning singer-songwriter spills a good one in the lyrics of his latest single, 'Water at a Wedding.' But that's not the only secret he's been keeping. 'No comment,' James, 29, tells PEOPLE with a laugh about the identity of the ex-girlfriend who undoubtedly plays the lead role in the eye-opening track. 'The fun thing about this song is people wanting to know the truth behind the story.' Granted, the co-writer of hits such as Jordan Davis' 'Next Thing You Know' admits the story behind 'Water at a Wedding' is a real one he experienced at an ex-girlfriend's wedding.. 'It was really fun to write and really easy to write because it was such a wild scenario,' says James, who penned 'Water at a Wedding' last September alongside fellow songwriters Chase McGill and Matt Dragstrem. 'We were just literally painting the scene.' At one point in the song, the story goes from sad to shocking. 'We were talking about the whole twist being in the second verse,' remembers James, who's already been gaining attention this summer on the strength of his debut radio single 'Wait Til You Have Kids.' He adds, 'But then we were like, 'No, let's keep people hanging.' I felt like we gave the listener a minute to really process the story that was going on before we twisted it even further in the bridge.' It's a twist that James decided to tell his ex about before the song even came out. 'I told her, 'I wrote this song about your wedding,' and we had a conversation about it,' he recalls. 'And then fast-forward, the song is coming out, so I told her to 'just prepare yourself.' So yeah, the heads up was given.' And while James gave his ex a heads-up about the release of the song, he didn't quite grant the same courtesy to his label. "My label had told me specifically to not post it,' James laughs. 'And I was just like, 'F--- it, I want to do it.' They weren't sure if the country listener was ready to hear a song like that come out of me. But then I'd have a couple Jack and Cokes in my house, and I'd be like, 'I just want to listen to it and just close my eyes and go through it again.'' Despite his label's advice, James got sneaky in June and teased 'Water at a Wedding' on his burner account. 'I made a fake TikTok account, and I turned the brightness all the way down, so nobody could see my face,' he says. 'It was the first TikTok I ever posted on that account, and it got a hundred thousand views.' The label forgave him, and the rest is history. The teasers for 'Water at a Wedding' garnered nearly 10 million views across platforms, including 6 million on TikTok alone. What makes the story of 'Water at a Wedding' even more intriguing? The story looks to be just beginning. 'I've got songs to keep explaining what happened after that song, and I already got to part two, part three, and so forth,' says James. 'So, that's kind of what we're working on.' In fact, James says the second song in the story has already been recorded. And while stepping from behind-the-scenes songwriter to front-and-center artist has been scary, it's a process that felt necessary to truly become the artist he wants to be going forward. 'Other people have been telling my story with their own albums and their own voice,' says James, who will head out on tour with Cole Swindell this fall. 'And I guess I was kind of scared to really lean into my personal stuff. That's a scary thing to do because I've got friends and family and exes and all that stuff. But that's what people want to hear. They want to know you.' Read the original article on People
