ESPN ranks Michigan RB Jordan Marshall as top breakout star for 2025 with Justice Haynes
Not only do you get better at football by playing football, but as former Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh had once noted, players make their biggest jumps from the first game to the second, and also from their first year to their second. And one projected starter (though he'll be splitting time) is about to get that big test in two different ways. Redshirt freshman running back Jordan Marshall spent most of 2024 injured, and though he saw some early time on special teams and one carry against Ohio State, he didn't really get much time until the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama when he rushed for an impressive 100 yards. Now, he's expected to be a co-starter along with Crimson Tide transfer Justice Haynes, and Michigan fans are salivating at his potential after seeing what he did in the bowl game. But the fans aren't alone. Even ESPN is getting into the mix. Coming up with a list on Wednesday, ranking the top second-year breakout players in 2025 across college football, Marshall ended up being ranked second of the 11 players who made the cut, just behind projected OSU QB starter Julian Sayin. 2. Jordan Marshall, RB, Michigan We got a taste of what Marshall brings to the table at the ReliaQuest Bowl. The No. 7 back in the 2024 ESPN 300, he went for 100 yards on 23 carries in the first and only start of his young career. The former Ohio Mr. Football will team up with Alabama transfer Justice Haynes in the Wolverines backfield. Early in preseason camp, it appears the reps will be shared, with Haynes as 1a and Marshall 1b. Marshall is elusive in tight quarters, fast in the open field and powerful on contact with a low center of gravity. He boasted the top verified shuttle (5-10-5) out of high school with 4.1 seconds, which would have been second among running backs at this year's NFL combine. Of course, the Wolverines, looking to revamp their offense, will be hoping that the tandem of Marshall and Haynes gets the maize and blue back to the 2021-23 years where Hassan Haskins, Blake Corum, and Donovan Edwards thrived in the ground game. However, last year, despite some flashes, Edwards and Kalel Mullings failed to recapture the ground game dominance of the years past. Of the second-year players on the Wolverines, Marshall is likely the highest profile, but right tackle Andrew Sprague and edge rusher Dominic Nichols could be equally as impactful, though the latter is expected to be more of a reserve, while the former will be a starter.

Big Ten coach reveals biggest Bryce Underwood concern
The post Big Ten coach reveals biggest Bryce Underwood concern appeared first on ClutchPoints. After winning the national championship in 2023, the Michigan football team took a step backwards last season. The Wolverines did lose a lot of their top talent, and also their head coach. Michigan finished the season with an 8-5 record, but wins over #2 Ohio State and #11 Alabama gave the program some momentum, along with a commitment from quarterback Bryce Underwood, who was the #1 recruit in the 2025 class. Advertisement Last season, the biggest issue for the Michigan football team was that it didn't really have a quarterback. Three players got opportunities, and none of them came close to meeting the standard. However, the Wolverines have Bryce Underwood now, and that should help the cause. Having Underwood will make a big difference, but Michigan will need to have talented players around him. One anonymous Big Ten coach thinks that there should be more focus on the running backs. 'The focus is on [Bryce] Underwood, but it should be on finding new backs to go with him,' the coach said, according to an article from On3. The one offensvie position group that Michigan should be feeling really good about is the RBs, so it's a bit surprising to see a Big Ten coach have that take. The Wolverines are returning sophomore Jordan Marshall, who had a massive game in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama. He won MVP of the game. Speaking of the Crimson Tide, Michigan also picked up Alabama transfer Justice Haynes, who was one of the best RBs in the transfer portal. Advertisement Losing Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings does hurt, but the Michigan football team has some great backs with good experience. With a capable QB like Bryce Underwood, this could be a College Football Playoff team. 'They would've been a serious postseason contender last year if they had a quarterback on the roster,' another anonymous coach said. 'Now they do, so it's all about how fast [Chip] Lindsey can get him up to speed and going.'

Jordan Marshall embracing leadership role with Michigan in 2025: 'I wanna win a natty'
Jordan Marshall embracing leadership role with Michigan in 2025: 'I wanna win a natty' ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Expectations were high coming in for Michigan football running back Jordan Marshall as he entered his freshman year last season, but injuries precluded him from seeing the field until the final weeks of the season. But with Donovan Edwards and Kalel Mullings both missing the ReliaQuest Bowl, Marshall got to be the star of the show against Alabama. Surpassing 100 yards on a lot of tough runs, Marshall had the look of a premier tailback in college football. Though it was just one game, he hopes that it will propel him forward into 2025, but also the desire to continue what the 2023 team (the year before he arrived) started also drives him and the rest of the offense. "Having that game, it gave me the confidence to now lead this team," Marshall said. "And knowing the offense, knowing the guys that are around me to take charge a little bit, and I wanna win a natty. So making sure everybody's on that same page to bring a natty back to Michigan." Marshall is poised to pair for former Crimson Tide running back Justice Haynes in the backfield, but the entire offense is set to look different. Whether it's new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, No. 1 recruit and former five-star Bryce Underwood, or some of the transfer portal additions, there are a lot of new moving parts for the maize and blue. But Marshall is excited to see where those parts take the offense and how much better they can be than a year ago when that side of the ball struggled. "We always have a chip -- we're Michigan," Marshall said. "We always need to perform at a high level and execute. And that's why I bring a guy like Chip in is to help us execute and to help us take this next step. And I'm excited to see what we can do this spring and carry it over to the fall and then into game time." As far as his own development, Marshall says he has a lot to work on. Like any young running back, the pre-snap decisions are a big part of it as well as his role within the passing game. While he lists a litany of things to improve upon, that he recognizes where he needs to get better so early in the season preparation process should help him when fall arrives months from now. "I would say pass pro, making sure that I can pick everything up in pass pro and that I'm ahead of the defense," Marshall said. "And I would say reading the defense, we call it stealing. When I'm post-snap, making sure that I know what's going on at all phases so when I get the ball in my hand, I can make the best read and I can see everything. And I know where the blitz is coming, I know where things are coming from and that's the next part of my game that I wanna take to the next step."
