(AP Photo/Dolores Ochoa) SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw Thursday in a South American World Cup qualifying game that marked Carlo Ancelotti's debut as national team coach. The match in Guayaquil offered few scoring opportunities for either team. Ecuador edged closer to its direct World Cup spot by maintaining second place in the round robin competition with 24 points. Brazil is in fourth place with 22 points. The top six teams in South America qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup. Advertisement Also on Thursday, Paraguay moved into third spot in the standings with 24 points with a 2-0 home win over Uruguay, which dropped to fifth. Matías Galarza scored the opener in the 13th minute and Julio Enciso added a second from the spot in the 81st. World Cup champion Argentina, which has already secured its place at the 2026 global tournament, was playing 10th-place Chile later Thursday. Ancelotti's changes AnceIottti made a lot of lineup changes compared with his predecessor, Dorival Júnior, who was fired after the team's 4-0 defeat at Argentina. The 65-year-old Italian coach gave Vinicius Júnior Brazil's No. 10, brought veteran midfielder Casemiro and striker Richarlison back into the starting lineup, gave a debut to defender Alex and played teenager Estêvão on the left wing as a replacement to suspended Raphinha. Advertisement Brazil appeared more defensive from the start against Ecuador, which is unbeaten in its last 14 home games. Brazil's best chance came in the 22nd, when Vinicius shot from close range and was stopped by goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle. 'Ecuador are more solid, they had been playing well. Little by little we will grow. We had a strong, solid defensive system tonight,' Casemiro said after the match. 'It's an immense joy to come back and do well ... be picked by such an amazing coach.' Vinicius said Ancelotti 'is yet to show his game plan' for Brazil. 'We will manage. The World Cup is right there and we need to be together to do well at the end of South American qualifying and World Cup preparations,' the striker said. Advertisement Brazil can qualify for the World Cup with a win over Paraguay next week, as long as its cushion over the seventh-place team is larger than six points. Friday's games Colombia takes on Peru and Venezuela challenges Bolivia on Friday. While the Colombians could overtake Brazil in the standings with a win, the Venezuelans and Bolivians will face off in a match that could prove decisive for seventh spot. The seventh place team in South American qualifying will advance to an intercontinental playoff for a spot in the World Cup. ___ AP soccer:

Brazilian club Flamengo backs Bruno Henrique after claim he deliberately sought yellow card

(AP Photo/Jorge Saenz, File) SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian club Flamengo has shielded winger Bruno Henrique after he was reportedly accused by federal police of intentionally getting a yellow card in a match. Local media reported earlier this week that Bruno Henrique was formally accused of getting booked in a Brazilian league match in 2023 so members of his family could profit from it on a betting website. Advertisement Coach Filipe Luís said in the early hours of Thursday that the 34-year-old player, who has made two appearances for Brazil's national team, should be presumed innocent. 'I spoke to him. He is fine, absolutely fine. He showed up with all his teammates. The only thing we ask for is the presumption of innocence. A person who has the right to defend himself against the accusations,' the coach said after Flamengo's 6-0 victory over Juventude at the Maracana Stadium late Wednesday. 'His behavior is that of a person who is completely calm, who went on the field today, was a teammate of his teammates, was a friend of his friends and is absolutely fine,' the coach said, adding that he plans to keep Bruno Henrique in the squad. Brazil's federal police, who confirmed last year they were investigating Bruno Henrique, did not say whether they had formally accused him after news reports emerged. The player has not spoken about the case, either. Advertisement The reports showed an alleged message exchange obtained by federal police between the player and his family members, in which he said he was going to be booked against Santos. Bruno Henrique received a yellow card in that game. It also shows an unusually high number of bets on the Flamengo winger being booked. Flamengo said on Tuesday it had not been informed by any authorities about the reports on Bruno Henrique, who has helped the club win two Copa Libertadores titles. Local media have reported that many of the suspicious bets for the player's booking against Santos came from his hometown of Belo Horizonte. Flamengo leads the Brazilian league with 10 points after four matches. Advertisement In May of last year, West Ham and Brazil national team midfielder Lucas Paquetá was charged by English soccer authorities amid allegations he had deliberately received cards during Premier League matches to influence betting markets. Paquetá denies any wrongdoing. In 2023, investigations by prosecutors in the state of Goias brought charges of alleged manipulation of sports competitions against 15 players across the top two tiers and local leagues. Many of them were suspended from playing the sport in Brazil. ___ AP soccer:

Barcelona needs own goal to win at Leganes and protect La Liga lead

Associated Press BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona needed an own goal to eke out a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Leganes and protect its lead of the Spanish league on Saturday. Leganes central defender Jorge Saenz slid to stop a pass by Raphinha bound for Robert Lewandowski and inadvertently pushed it into his own net for the game's only goal in the 48th minute. The error spoiled an otherwise strong performance from the southern Madrid side, which generated more scoring chances than the front-runners. The hard-earned win extended Barcelona's lead to seven points over Real Madrid before the titleholders visit Alaves on Sunday. After this weekend there are seven rounds left, including a 'clasico' next month. Leganes shocked Barcelona 1-0 in December, during a dip in form by the Catalan club. But since the start of 2025, Barcelona has now gone 24 games without a loss and is in the running for a treble of titles including the Copa del Rey, where it has reached the final against Madrid in two weeks. Hansi Flick's side kept up is momentum before it visits Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday aiming to make good on its 4-0 first-leg win in their Champions League quarterfinal. ___ AP soccer: in this topic

Barcelona extend LaLiga lead with 1-0 win at lowly Leganes

LEGANES, Spain, April 12 (Reuters) - Barcelona extended their lead at the top to seven points with a 1-0 win at Leganes thanks to an own goal by defender Jorge Saenz on Saturday that took their unbeaten LaLiga run to 13 matches. Following a tense first half with chances for both sides, Barca went in front after the break when Raphinha's cross for Robert Lewandowski was inadvertently deflected into the net by Leganes defender Saenz and it proved to be the winner. Lewandowski, chasing his 100th goal for the Catalans, later saw his header from Raphinha's cross go wide before he was replaced by Ferran Torres after 67 minutes. The hosts looked to have levelled when Dani Raba headed home Adria Altimira's cross but the goal was disallowed for offside. Hansi Flick's side moved to 70 points above second-placed Real Madrid, who have 63 and visit Alaves on Sunday. Leganes remain second-bottom on 28, two points off the safety zone.

How Indigenous peoples face climate change

1 Apr 2025 22:24 (The Associated Press) Indigenous communities are often among the first to feel the impacts of climate change. Rising temperatures, rising seas and extreme weather events threaten their traditional ways of life, food systems and lands. In the face of this, Indigenous groups are finding ways to adapt and even some solutions to some of the problems that come with climate change. This shouldn't be surprising. Indigenous groups point out they have been successful stewards of lands for thousands of years. The AP climate team has reported on challenges these groups deal with, from the Amazon to the Arctic, and how they have combined tradition with innovation to respond. Here are some examples: Struggling to Protect the Future of Spearfishing The Ojibwe and other Indigenous people are fighting to keep this way of life vibrant. As a result of warming waters, increasingly variable seasonal changes and lakeshore development, walleye numbers in some lakes are dwindling. Losing this species would mean losing a food source for community members, a sovereign right to fish, and a deep connection to tradition and nature. (AP Photo/John Locher) Amazon's Ashninka Tribe Restore their TerritoryThe self-sufficiency of Apiwtxa village in Brazil, which comes from growingcrops and protecting its forest, is now a model for an ambitious project to help 12 Indigenous territories in the western Amazon about the size of the U.S. state of Delaware. The Organisation of Indigenous People of the Jurua River got a $6.8 million grant from the Amazon Fund, the world's largest initiative to combat rainforest deforestation. With Apiwtxa as the model, the grant is geared toward improving Indigenous land management with an emphasis on food production, cultural strengthening and forest surveillance. (AP Photo/Jorge Saenz) Wayuu People in Northern Colombia Prolonged droughts, intensified by climate change, have worsened water scarcity, straining Wayuu's already limited access to drinking water and resources for livestock and agriculture. Climate change is rapidly altering the way of life for the Wayuu, a semi-nomadic Indigenous group living in the arid La Guajira region that spans northern Colombia and Venezuela. As rainfall becomes more erratic, food insecurity rises, with crops failing and livestock struggling to survive. The worsening conditions have forced many Wayuu to migrate, either to urban centres or across borders, further intensifying their socio-economic struggles. The Wayuu's cultural identity, rooted in their spiritual connection to the land, is also at risk. (AP Photo/Rick Bowmer) The Alaska town of Newtok has been destroyed by erosion and melting permafrost. All that's left are some dilapidated and largely abandoned grey homes scraped bare of paint by salt darting in on the winds of storms. The town's residents gradually moved their possessions onto boats to relocate to Mertarvik, becoming one of the first Alaska Native villages to complete a large-scale relocation because of climate change.
