NBA Trade Rumors: Josh Giddey's $120M Payday - The Chicago Bulls' High-Stakes Bet on Their Aussie Superstar

Josh Giddey (Image via Getty) The Chicago Bulls' bold gamble on Josh Giddey has paid off in a major way—and now, the franchise faces a pivotal decision. After a breakout 2024-25 season, the 22-year-old Australian phenom is poised to secure a mammoth contract extension, with NBA insiders projecting a deal worth at least $120 million. Josh Giddey's arrival via trade initially flew under the radar, but his rapid ascent into stardom has made him indispensable in Chicago. What began as a season of adjustment transformed into a showcase of his elite playmaking, rebounding, and scoring prowess—especially after the Chicago Bulls moved on from Zach LaVine. With Giddey's restricted free agency looming, the front office must now weigh a franchise-altering investment in a player who has proven he can carry the team's future. From his near-triple-double surges to his vocal leadership, Josh Giddey has cemented himself as the Chicago Bulls' cornerstone. The question isn't whether they should pay him—it's whether they can afford not to. Josh Giddey's Breakout Season With the Chicago Bulls After arriving via trade, Josh Giddey quickly became a cornerstone for the Chicago Bulls . His stat line for the season—14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game—underscored his versatility. But his post-All-Star break performance was even more impressive: - 21.2 points per game - 10.7 rebounds per game - 9.3 assists per game Josh Giddey. Image via: Michael Reaves/ Getty Images The turning point? The Zach LaVine trade. Giddey acknowledged the shift, telling Fox Sports Australia : "The first half of the year it's a new situation, so naturally there's going to be an inclination to come in here and try to fit in. That was my initial mindset... But I think it took me a little while to find my feet, and obviously, trade deadline happened when Zach got moved... It kind of opened up avenues for other guys to step into. I saw that as an opportunity to take on a bigger responsibility." (H/t: ClutchPoints ) The $120 Million Question Giddey enters restricted free agency this summer, giving the Bulls the right to match any offer. Fischer reports the 22-year-old is seeking a five-year deal worth no less than $120 million—roughly $30 million annually. Here's how his current and projected earnings stack up: Earnings Period Salary 2024-25 Season $8.4 million Projected New Deal ~$30 million/year Fischer's analysis aligns with Giddey's rising value: "Sources say Philadelphia has ongoing confidence in its ability to re-sign Grimes, but let's see. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Ditto for the Chicago Bulls and Giddey coming to terms on the five-year pact that the Aussie playmaker is said to be seeking which is routinely projected to land at no less than $120 million." Why the Chicago Bulls Must Keep Josh Giddey With LaVine gone, Josh Giddey's role as a primary playmaker and scorer is undeniable. Key reasons Chicago should lock him up: 1. Post-Deadline Dominance: Nearly averaged a triple-double after LaVine's departure. 2. Youth and Upside: At 22, he's entering his prime. 3. Roster Stability: The Bulls lack young stars, making Giddey a core piece. The front office faces pressure to secure Giddey long-term while navigating other offseason moves, including the NBA Draft. But one thing is clear: letting him walk isn't an option. How hard will the Nets dip into the NBA restricted free-agency market?

How hard will the Nets dip into the NBA restricted free-agency market? The Brooklyn Nets head into the 2025 NBA offseason with a myriad of ways in which they can improve the roster, from the 2025 NBA Draft to free-agency. Brooklyn has four first-round picks to use in the upcoming Draft, but they will have to use free-agency to build the rest of the team around their incoming rookies, but it will be interesting to see how they approach free-agency. "Others around the league have wondered if Brooklyn would dip into the restricted free agent market this summer with players such as Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga, Santi Aldama, and Quentin Grimes all available," HoopsHype's Michael Scotto wrote earlier in May. Free-agency in this current landscape in the league is usually not about the best players given that those guys usually have player options, but the restricted free-agents are the interesting cases. Per HoopsHype, the best player available this summer that doesn't have a player option is Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner and the run that the Pacers are on right now in the Eastern Conference playoffs, it's safe to say that Turner is returning to Indiana. Giddey, who played for the Chicago Bulls this season, is coming off an impressive season as he averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 46.5% from the field and 37.8% from three-point land. Kuminga, who has had an uneven career during his time with the Golden State Warriors, is coming off a season with averages of 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per contest while shooting 45.4% from the floor and 30.5% from deep. Aldama, who played power forward and center for the Memphis Grizzlies, has an interesting profile heading into restricted free-agency as he is averaging 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game on 48.3/36.8/69.1 shooting splits. Lastly, Grimes, who split last season between the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76ers, increased his status significantly since landing in Philadelphia as he averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 46.9% from the field and 37.3% from behind the three-point line. All four of these players are sure to get significant pay raises this summer, but it will be interesting to see if any of them will be in Brooklyn next season.

Bulls Path to Kristaps Porzingis Pursuit Becoming Clear

The Chicago Bulls desperately need to choose a direction. The dumping face of the franchise, Zach LaVine, appeared to be a signal from the front office that they were committed to acquiring some more ping pong balls to improve their standing in the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes. The club promptly finished 17-10 after the All-Star break, before getting crushed in the Play-In to further their place in basketball mediocrity. Chicago has just a 1.7% chance of landing the Duke phenom and picking outside of the top ten. Re-signing Josh Giddey and prioritizing the development of Matas Buzelis are obvious next moves, but this roster is stuck in neutral and needs a shakeup. Could the Boston Celtics' recent postseason struggles open the door for acquiring a dominant big and long-range sniper? Kristaps PorzingisGetty Images Even if the Celtics make a miraculous comeback against the Knicks and eventually return to the NBA Finals, the team is in financial peril. They are substantially over the second apron and need to shed salary fast. The new ownership group, led by William Chisolm, shared a reluctance to split the group up, but the lucrative tax penalties are likely too substantial to ignore. Advertisement Chicago could exploit Boston's vulnerable state and try to pry away Kristaps Porzingis. The 29-year-old has a lengthy injury history, but when he's on the floor, there are few more dominant post presences in the game on both ends. His shooting from distance opens up the offense, and his ability to shuffle his feet at his size provides elite rim protection. Since the Bulls would be doing Boston a favor, they could also land some much-needed depth in the form of Sam Hauser. He is one of the purest shooters in the league and can hold his own guarding the ball against similarly sized wings. They could maybe even swindle Baylor Scheierman, who progressed rapidly and had some impressive showings for the current champs. A third team would have to be involved to eat Nikola Vucevic's contract—potentially the Nets if they fail to land Flagg. They have plenty of room to take on the disastrous deal, can acquire some picks for their troubles, and continue to tank with eyes on incoming freshman AJ Dybantsa or Darryn Peterson. Advertisement The Celtics would almost certainly want to keep their championship window open and be willing to give up extra capital for Cam Johnson. He slides right in to fit their scheme and drops Brooklyn's floor even more to pave the way for young players to get increased minutes. They'd presumably need to make another move to further cut costs, but it's a great start. A potential framework (without picks) would look something like this: ESPN's Trade Machine This not only helps the Bulls' youth movement but also maximizes the five spot. If Porzingis is healthy, the club can easily compete for a seven or an eight seed, and if he's not, it just allows younger players to get more shine with the hopes of eventually getting better odds in the lottery. The Bulls were 1 coin flip or a missed Josh Giddey shot away from drafting Cooper Flagg

The Bulls were 1 coin flip or a missed Josh Giddey shot away from drafting Cooper Flagg Show Caption Hide Caption 2025 NBA draft lottery: Mavericks, Spurs and 76ers big winners The Mavericks secure the top pick in the 2025 NBA draft lottery despite a 1.8% chance The Chicago Bulls had a stroke of bad luck when fans learned that the Dallas Mavericks were winners of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. The Bulls, like the Mavericks, were fairly competitive and made the play-in tournament this season. So losing out on the rights to the No. 1 overall pick and draft Cooper Flagg may not hurt quite as bad as it did for teams like the Jazz, Hornets, Wizards, and Pelicans. The Wizards got it especially bad considering they so narrowly missed out on both Flagg this year and Victor Wembanyama two years ago. But what happened to the Bulls in the lottery is still particularly devastating. More: 2025 NBA Draft lottery winners (Cooper Flagg! Mavs!) and losers (the lottery system) The Bulls and Mavericks finished with the exact same record in the standings. So before the lottery, the two franchises had a coin toss to see who would have the twelfth-best odds at No. 1 overall and who would have the eleventh. Dallas won that tiebreaker last month and then went on to shockingly win the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. This, of course, is about as tough of a break as you can find in the league. That means Chicago was effectively a coin flip away from having those exact same ping-pong numbers that eventually won the chance to draft Flagg. What are the chances of that? More: Bulls' Josh Giddey shocked the Lakers with an unbelievable half-court buzzer-beater Chicago, however, would have never found themselves in this situation were it not for the buzzer-beater that Josh Giddey hit against the Lakers on March 27. If the Bulls had won just one fewer game over the course of the season, in fact, they would have not tied with the Mavericks and would have just outright owned the ping-pong balls that eventually became No. 1 overall. That is about as frustrating as it can possibly get for a franchise that continues to teeter between middling and slightly above or below. Flagg would have given them a chance to have a focal point and identity but instead, he will play elsewhere next season.

2025 NBA Draft scouting report: Egor Demin, G, BYU

For a two-round mock draft and a big board with full scouting reports, check out my . Height: 6-9 • Weight: 190 • Class: Freshman • Age: 19 Summary: Demin has a rare ability at his size to make dazzling passes. But he's also struggled to shoot and create his own shot against lengthy defenders, making him more of a love-him or hate-him prospect than a sure thing. Comparisons: Josh Giddey, Anthony Black Playmaking: Demin is a fluid ball-handler for his size with the height to see over defenders and the vision to make any pass. He puts velocity on his passes and delivers them with accuracy. It's a natural skill for him, the way he works to manipulate defenders and then seamlessly fires creative passes off the dribble. Off-ball movement: If he doesn't become a primary creator down the line, his basketball IQ playing without the ball will come in handy. Before joining BYU, he played for Real Madrid and excelled within its motion system, showing strong instincts cutting and relocating into open space. Defense: Demin's size gives him defensive versatility. He moves well laterally and can use his length around the rim as a helper. Shooting: There aren't many indicators that inspire optimism in his shot. He has made under 70% of his free throws and doesn't have soft touch on tough layups or floaters. He made only 18.8% of his dribble-jumper 2s, 25% of his dribble-jumper 3s, and 27.1% of his catch-and-shoot 3s, per Synergy. Additionally, with stiff mechanics and a shaky ability to create his own shot against pressure, he clearly has quite a long way to go. Shot creation: Even though he moves gracefully, he lacks a quick first step and the burst to consistently turn the corner without the advanced handle to compensate. Most of his pull-up jumpers are heavily contested, and even his layups don't come easy. Despite his size, he isn't an above-the-rim finisher either which is especially an issue since he struggles scoring against physical contact.
