India will come with high hopes, England looking forward to battle: Brendon McCullum

England head coach Brendon McCullum said the young Indian Test team will arrive with high hopes, but he remains clear about the direction he wants to take his side in as they gear up for a challenging five-match home begin their new World Test Championship cycle with a five-Test series against England, starting at Headingley on 20 June. India, without the services of the retired Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will be led by new skipper Shubman Gill. The squad features a promising crop of young batters, including Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi are aiming for their first Test series win in England since 2007. "It's important the guys refresh. We know where we want to get to as a Test team," McCullum told Sky Sports bowling resources have taken a hit ahead of the series. Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the first Test, Mark Wood is unavailable for the entire summer due to injury, and Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring strain sustained during the one-off Test against Zimbabwe a fortnight Woakes used the India A match as preparation, bowling 32 overs and picking up five wickets. Josh Tongue, who is "likely to be part of the Test XI at Headingley," chipped in with two wickets."There are some quality bowlers unavailable, but we have a nice, varied attack with Chris Woakes, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, and Josh Tongue providing the high-pace also have Shoaib Bashir, who is growing in confidence with every Test. We know we're going to be tested against India, and they will arrive well-prepared."They're an outstanding cricketing nation, they'll come here with high hopes, and we're looking forward to the contest."The England coach also praised young all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who returns to the 14-man group after impressing in New Zealand over the winter with three fifties from the No. 3 spot."Bethell has a good life in front of him," McCullum added."For a 21-year-old, he's got a real poise, and that allows him to go out there and be present and show off his flair and talent. The world is his oyster. He's already becoming a leader in the dressing room, which is what you want."Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett have reminded me of Duckett and Zak Crawley in the Test game. We know how good Duckett is, but the power that Smith possesses is amazing. These guys are fearless, and if you add the craft, then you hope you end up with a rounded player." You May Also Like

6 foot 4 inches teenage fast bowler who dismissed KL Rahul, added to England squad for first Test vs India as backup

Teenage fast bowler Eddie Jack, a towering 6-foot-4 seamer from Hampshire, has been invited to train with England's senior team ahead of the opening Test against India, following a string of impressive performances for the England Lions against India A. Jack was added to the squad as a backup for Josh Tongue, who hobbled off the pitch during the India A vs England Lions match. Jack, 19, grabbed headlines after he dismissed India star KL Rahul, who had scored a century in the first innings of the second unofficial Test at Northampton. The match ended in a draw, but Jack's sharp spells, particularly against India's top-order, left a lasting impression on selectors and the Lions' coaching staff — which includes the likes of Andrew Flintoff, Mark Wood, and Graeme Swann. Jack, who is yet to make his County Championship debut for Hampshire, has played just two first-class matches — both against India A — and also featured for England U-19s earlier this year in South Africa. Despite his limited experience, he has consistently challenged top-tier batters, beating the edges of Nitish Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, and others during the Northampton match. In the second innings, Jack returned figures of 2 for 71, including the prized scalp of Jurel, India's Ranchi Test hero from 2022. The teenager's growing reputation was further cemented last month when he took five wickets in a warm-up match against Zimbabwe, representing a combined counties XI. Jack's promotion comes amid an injury crisis in England's pace department. Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the series opener, Mark Wood is unavailable for the entire summer, and Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring strain picked up during the recent one-off Test against Zimbabwe. With just 10 days to go before the first Test at Headingley on June 20, England are looking to bolster their fast-bowling stocks. Though Jack has not yet officially been named in the Test squad, his inclusion in training sessions suggests he may be on standby for a potential debut. Meanwhile, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue — both part of the India A fixture — are expected to play key roles. Woakes bowled 32 overs across two innings and claimed five wickets, while Tongue picked up two scalps and is tipped to feature in the XI at Headingley unless he fails to recover from the injury. The upcoming five-match series will also mark the beginning of a new era for India, now under the captaincy of Shubman Gill, following the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. India are looking for their first Test series win in England since 2007.

Sam Cook: My black book of scalps will be in my bag for England debut

Sam Cook will make his England Test debut against Zimbabwe, hoping to add more batsmen to the little black book of scalps he has kept since early in his career. Cook, 27, has been named in England's team for the four-day Test match at Trent Bridge starting on Thursday — a debut he has had to wait a long time for despite his 227 County Championship wickets being the most of any seamer in the past five years, with his 321 first-class wickets for Essex coming at an average of only 19.85. He is joined in the pace attack by Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue, who will play his first Test since the 2023 Ashes. Zimbabwe come into this Test, their first on English soil

Cook, who plays for Essex in the County Championship, has taken 321 first-class wickets and made a name for himself on the England Lions tour of Australia where he picked up 13 wickets in three matches. The 27-year-old will be part of an inexperienced bowling attack alongside Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson and spinner Shoaib Bashir, with England's pace department depleted after injuries to key bowlers including Mark Wood and Chris Woakes. Zak Crawley has retained his spot as opener despite his underwhelming performances in recent tests, while Ollie Pope returns to number three. The match, which begins on Thursday, is Zimbabwe's first test in England in 22 years and marks the start of the English summer. England team: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith, Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Sam Cook, Shoaib Bashir.
