Moment Rangers star got off team bus on way to a game after Steven Gerrard gave him shock message

Windass exited the Ibrox outfit joining then-Championship side Wigan on transfer deadline day in August 2018. And it all quickly unravelled from there. Windass told the Open Goal podcast: "I started the first two games of the season then left on deadline day. "I had a nightmare. They activated my buyout clause. "He got me off the bus and told me, [there's] a bid in for you. "I have got to tell you because you're not going to leave to go there'.. and then I left." The Sheffield Wednesday striker added: " I didn't have an agent at the time. It was a bad decision. "But I just got in my car and went down the motorway. "[Rangers assistant] Mick Beale was texting me, saying you're making a big mistake. "I was 23, I wanted a bigger wage. I was stupid." Watch Rangers boss Steven Gerrard show his love for Josh Windass' deadly finishing in training Windass said he had not spoke to Gerrard after the abrupt departure until a few months after during the January transfer window and the Liverpool legend was fuming. Windass says the club looked to bring him back on loan. But a move never materialised as he claimed the Wigan manager at the time Paul Cook would not sanction a deal. "We had a zoom call about six months later because I was going to go back on loan," he said. "Gerrard basically gave me what for. He told me everything that was wrong with me and how I can improve and stuff as a person. "He said if we are going to bring you back we need to have an honest conversation. "I never went back anyway and that was it. "It's ages ago now, so I'm not that bothered by it. "But for two years after, I thought about it every day until I signed in for Sheffield Wednesday." Gerrard is favourite to return to the Ibrox dugout and be the next Rangers manager but it is believed he faces competition from Russell Martin. Ex-Rangers star Josh Windass at centre of bizarre spat after he calls out youth team player in podcast

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Rangers player Josh Windass found himself taken to task by a former Sheffield Wednesday youth team player after he launched a scathing attack on the youngster. It all centred around running stats and a discussion about the importance of fitness in the modern day game. Windass, who has scored 54 goals for the Championship side and became their record marksman this century, told Open Goal: "We've got a young lad called Joey - I think he's been released. He's p*** anyway. "I was speaking to him in the canteen at football and one of our coaches said to me, 'have a word with Joey, he never runs more than 9k in a game ever'. "So I was speaking to him and I was like, 'how much do you run in a game' and he said '9km - Messi don't run'. "A kid at 17, I didn't say anything to him but I was thinking, 'you're the worst player ever and you're talking about Messi - run around. " The young full-back did not dispute that the conversation took place but believes his comments were taken out of context. He has since been released from Sheff Wed and is now looking for a new club. While Windass has found himself linked with La Liga giants Valencia, the youngster concedes the latest incident has only compounded what's been a difficult time. He posted on X: "It's disappointing to be called out by Josh Windass in what's already been a tough period for me. Ex-Rangers star's dad breaks down in tears after son's play-off winner "Not being offered a new contract at Sheffield Wednesday has been difficult to process and the last thing I expected was to be dragged into something like this. "For clarity, the conversation has been completely flipped out of context. "Windass asked me to name a player who doesn't run over 10km in a game, and I responded honestly in that moment — it wasn't personal, nor was it meant to be disrespectful. "It's frustrating to see things taken out of proportion when emotions are already high. "I've always tried to conduct myself with honesty and respect, both on and off the pitch. "All I want now is to move forward and focus on the next chapter of my career." Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Then Sheffield Wednesday at the same venue, promoted in stoppage time with a flying Josh Windass header having trailed by four in the play-off semi-final.
