Del Toro takes it easy during 18th stage of Giro as Denz wins with solo breakaway

CESANO MADERNO, Italy (AP) — Overall leader Isaac Del Toro had a chance to take it relatively easy during the 18th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Thursday, which was won by German rider Nico Denz with a solo breakaway. Del Toro, the first Mexican rider to wear the pink jersey, finished safely in the main pack following the 144-kilometer (89-mile) route from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno, which featured three minor climbs early on before a relatively flat finale. It will likely be much tougher for the 21-year-old Del Toro the next two days, with grueling back-to-back mountain stages before the mostly ceremonial finish in Rome on Sunday. For now, Del Toro maintained his advantage of 41 seconds ahead of 2019 champion Richard Carapaz and 51 seconds ahead of British rider Simon Yates. Juan Ayuso, Del Toro's UAE Emirates teammate, abandoned the race early on in the stage after struggling for days. Considered a pre-race favorite, Ayuso stood 26th, nearly 50 minutes behind Del Toro, and was battling through knee pain and a bee sting. 'Obviously this is not how I wanted my Giro to end but some things are out of my control,' Ayuso said in a team statement. 'I wish the guys all the best and hope Isaac can keep pink all the way to Rome.' It was the third victory at the Giro in Denz's career, having also won two stages in 2023. The next two stages are both rated with five stars for maximum difficulty. Stage 19 on Friday is a 166-kilometer (103-mile) leg from Biella to Champoluc that features five climbs before a short descent into the finish. Then Saturday's penultimate stage is a 205-kilometer (127-mile) leg from Verres to Sestriere that features the beyond-category climb on a gravel road to Colle delle Finestre — where Chris Froome's audacious attack in 2018 earned him the title. ___ AP cycling:

UAE Team Emirates star Juan Ayuso quits Giro d'Italia after being stung in the eye by a bee

UAE Team Emirates star Juan Ayuso has been forced to quit the Giro d'Italia after being stung in the eye by a bee. Ayuso, who saw his bid for overall glory wilt in recent days, endured more rotten luck on Thursday when the bee crawled inside his glasses and stung him in the eye ahead of Stage 18. Ayuso's face quickly swelled up leaving him unable to see out of his right eye. 'Obviously this is not how I wanted my Giro to end but some things are out of my control,' said Ayuso. 'I wish the guys all the best and hope [teammate] Isaac [Del Toro] can keep pink all the way to Rome.' Despite advice from the UAE Team Emirates doctors to sit out Thursday's stage, he attempted to ride before being forced to retire on the side of the road. 'It's going to go viral but a bee went inside my helmet and I can't see in my right eye,' said Ayuso ahead of his aborted attempt to ride. 'I don't want people to make captions of it, because I know it is going to go viral, but it is what it is. 'And I will try to, you know … the team doctor said it's best for me not to start, but I really want to try and give my best to be here for the team. 'Yesterday, I was not useful at all because I am feeling really bad. But you know, I hope I can recover for the next days. I am going to try and get past today.' Ayuso had started the Giro with high hopes of overall victory in General Classification as he led the UAE Team Emirates challenge in the absence of star rider Tadej Pogacar. The Spaniard, 22, was widely regarded as one of the leading contenders in what was his debut in the three-week Grand Tour race that finishes this Sunday in Rome. That challenge has failed to materialise, however, with him suffering on the Giro's many punishing climbs. On Wednesday's Stage 17, he limped across the line in 141st place, more than 30 minutes behind, as teammate Isaac Del Toro soared to stage victory and solidified his grip on the maglia rosa.

Juan Ayuso withdraws from Giro d'Italia after bee sting: ‘I can't see out my right eye'

Juan Ayuso has withdrawn from the Giro d'Italia after a bee sting left the 22-year-old struggling to see. 'Yesterday during the stage, I was stung by a wasp or a hornet, and people can see how my eye looks,' he told Eurosport ahead of Thursday's stage 18. 'I can't see out of my right eye. I'm here because I want to support the team. My team (UAE Team Emirates) told me not to start, but I wanted to at least try, to test myself in the first few kilometres.' Ayuso eventually pulled up and withdrew with around 110km remaining, having already been distanced by both the peloton and grupetto on the opening climb. Juan Ayuso abandona el Giro y se mete directo al coche del equipo.#GirodItalia — (@Eurosport_ES) May 29, 2025 The Spanish rider had also been suffering from a knee injury, having lost almost 50 minutes on the general classification (GC) over the past two days. This has been a chastening Giro for Ayuso, who entered the race with genuine hopes of overall victory — having told Spanish newspaper Marca that anything but a podium would be a disappointment. Advertisement After beating his rival GC contenders to win stage seven — a sharp climb to Tagliacozzo — Ayuso briefly appeared race favourite. However, Ayuso's 21-year-old teammate Isaac del Toro took the Maglia Rosa two days later, distancing his team leader on the white gravel roads of Tuscany. Ayuso needed three stitches on his knee after crashing, which he says has worsened throughout the race. The Spniard was definitely dropped by the peloton on the penultimate climb of stage 16, before riding with the grupetto the following day. Ayuso's withdrawal, given his injuries and lack of form over recent days, is unlikely to significantly affect Del Toro's chances of pink — the Mexican has strong climbing domestiques like Rafa Majka, Adam Yates, and American Brandon McNulty still in support. The Giro returns to the mountains on Friday, ahead of two decisive stages.

Who is leading the Giro d'Italia? Maglia rosa and general classification standings

The Giro d'Italia general classification standings shuffled again on stage eight as Primoz Roglic conceded the leader's pink jersey to Italian veteran Diego Ulissi. Ulissi was part of a nearly 20-strong breakaway group that escaped on a frantic, relentless hilly stage in the Apennines, won by Jayco AlUla's Luke Plapp. Advertisement Ulissi took third on the stage but the bonus seconds, and a nearly four-minute lead on the peloton, were enough to see him pull on pink and end a four-year drought for a home wearer of the iconic jersey. The race remains a battle between Roglic and his major rival Juan Ayuso, who won stage seven, and the Spaniard nicked another second battle from the 2023 champion with a late sprint to the line in Castelraimondo. Mexican rider Del Toro stretches Giro lead beyond a minute with rivals slowed by crash in 14th stage

NOVA GORICA, Slovenia (AP) — Overall leader Isaac Del Toro gained big chunks of time on many of his biggest rivals who were slowed by a crash in the wet and slippery 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday. Kasper Asgreen of Denmark, who got into an early breakaway, won the mostly flat stage all on his own. Del Toro, the first Mexican rider to wear the pink jersey, finished in the second group 16 seconds behind. But Del Toro's UAE Team Emirates teammate Juan Ayuso, 2023 champion Primoz Roglic and top-placed Italian Antonio Tiberi all finished further behind. Del Toro, who entered the stage with a 38-second lead over Ayuso, now leads Simon Yates by 1 minute, 20 seconds. Ayuso dropped to third, 1:26 behind; 2019 champion Richard Carapaz is fourth, 2:07 behind; and Roglic now trails by 2:23 in fifth. Tiberi, who also hit the road, dropped from third to eighth, 3:02 behind. Giulio Ciccone, who was seventh, appeared injured in the crash but got back on his bike and finished the stage several minutes behind the leaders. The crash, which occurred about 22 kilometers (less than 15 miles) from the finish, occurred on a section of cobblestones where the road was narrowed by a raised sidewalk coming around a curve. The 195-kilometer (121-mile) leg started in Treviso and finished over the border in Slovenia. For Stage 15 on Sunday, there's a big climb up Monte Grappa at the midpoint of the 219-kilometer (136-mile) route from Fiume Veneto to Asiago. Monday is the race's third and final rest day. The Giro ends in Rome next weekend. ___ AP cycling:
