Stick review: Owen Wilson's golfer charms, but is this the ‘new Ted Lasso'?

Stick, shtick and plenty of heart. Apple TV+ is hoping this feelgood sports comedy is the new Ted Lasso, and although it might not be everyone's (tin) cup of tea, there's a lot to like about this show. Let's start with the stick; that's a golf club if you hadn't already guessed, and although there's plenty of green-side chat and birdies, the good news is you don't need to like or understand the sport to enjoy the show (although it probably helps). Our story centres on an ageing former golf pro, Pryce Cahill (Owen Wilson). He was once the next big thing on tour before spectacularly crashing and burning. Twenty or so years later, he's still haunted by his failure, unsuccessfully trying to save his marriage to Amber-Linn (Judy Greer), drinking a lot and working in a golf shop recommending overpriced clubs to make as much commission as possible. Pryce just can't catch a break — that is, until he spots the troubled teenager Santi Wheeler (Peter Dager) hitting colossal drives after sneaking on to the local range and sees the potential to make him a star. Like most things in Pryce's life, this isn't going to be easy, and Santi (for reasons that will become clear as the show goes on) is incredibly resistant to help with his golf and taking this big risk. However, when his mother, Elena (Mariana Treviño), realises this could be a chance to make enough money for the family to change their lives, she reluctantly agrees to go on tour in a crowded camper van owned and driven by Pryce's old caddy, Mitts (Marc Maron). So begins a very pleasing journey of discovery: a mentor who's all-in on a long shot and his cantankerous mate; a mother who knows what she wants and a hot-headed raw talent with a lot of baggage — what could possibly go wrong? • Why Ted Lasso is the best show about football That leads me to the elephant in the room, the shtick. Many people like Wilson's thing. That mild Texas drawl, loveable loser, laid-back demeanour and anything-goes easy charm. And well, some don't. I'm in the former camp and therefore the prospect of ten episodes of a Wilson-powered vehicle fills my heart with happiness — but for those who wish they'd never seen You, Me and Dupree or Wedding Crashers, to use the golfing parlance, now's the time to pick up and head for the 19th hole. And so if you're not put off by golf or Wilson, let us talk about the real star of the show: the heart. Whereas 'cooler' comedy tends to focus on the edgy and the anxiety-provoking, this is a show happy to settle in with its feelings, and there are plenty of them. From the rage against the machine relationship between youngsters Santi and the equally disenfranchised country club waitress Zero (Lilli Kay) and the quirky dynamic between middle-aged Elena and Mitts, there's a lot going on. And that's before we throw in Pryce's complicated relationships with everyone, which drive the story along at a pace. Like Ted Lasso, this is a story that is unafraid to take its flawed characters on an emotionally charged comedic flight over fairway and rough, through the woods and into bunkers, before leaving them all a putt at happiness. If you're looking for a new comedy, it's worth a shot.★★★★☆ Love TV? Judy Greer reveals what she plans to change ahead of her 50th birthday

Judy Greer "doesn't want to make any changes" in her life just because she is turning 50. The '27 Dresses' star - who has been married to TV executive producer Dean E. Johnsen and is stepmother to his two children - will celebrate her milestone birthday in July and joked that she is "kind of boring" so she is just planning on going on a trip with her family to mark the occasion. She told PEOPLE: "I'm taking a trip with my family. I guess I'm kind of boring. Everything in my life is really nice and really good, and I'm really happy, so I kind of just don't want to make any changes." Throughout the course of her career, Judy has become known for her roles in films such as '13 Going On 30' and 'Jawbreaker' but admitted as she moved towards the end of her forties that while she felt "very lucky" to be working, there was still a "long way to go" in terms of providing actresses her age across the board with "better" things to do. She said: "I'm very lucky to be an actress in my 40s right now because there are great roles for us.' 'There are great directors and writers out there, and so I think that we're just getting served better material than those women were when I was in my 20s. There's a long way to go. Please don't get me wrong, but it's a start and I'll take it!" Judy can now be seen in the Apple+ sports comedy series 'Slick' and stars alongside Owen Wilson, Peter Dager, Marc Maron, Mariana Treviño, Lilli Kay and Timothy Olyphant. The synopsis reads: "After the collapse of his marriage [to Greer's character Amber-Linn] and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, ex-pro golfer Pryce Cahil hedges his bets, and future, entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi [Dager]."

5 great TV shows you need to watch in June 2025

The summer is upon us, or at least the season will officially be here by the end of the month. With the days getting longer, you might be spending more time outside being active and enjoying the extra sun. It also means you'll want to sit back and kick your feet up after an even longer day. There's no better way than to check out a hot new show. Here, we have selected five great TV shows you need to watch in June 2025. All but one are new series. The exception is the third and final season of one of the most-watched foreign shows on Netflix. Recommended Videos Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new shows to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, the best shows on Max, and the best shows on Disney+. Stick (June 4) Owen Wilson stars in this sports comedy that sounds like a mix of Ted Lasso and Happy Gilmore. He's Pryce Cahill in Stick, a former professional golfer whose career ended decades ago, long before he was ready to throw in the proverbial clubs. With his life in shambles, Pryce gains a reignited flame for the sport and puts all his golf balls into the basket of a rising young player named Santi (Peter Dager), who he believes he can turn into a star. Marc Maron and Judy Greer are among its main cast, with Timothy Olyphant in a guest role. Wilson serves as executive producer. Stick consists of 10 episodes, with the first three premiering at once before a weekly release schedule. Whether or not this comedy ranks among the best shows on Apple TV+ remains to be seen, but the cast and the premise, albeit one that's been done time and time again, could be a winning formula. Stream Stick on Apple TV+. Ironheart (June 24) The foray of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into television continues with Ironheart, the 14th series produced by Marvel Studios and the latest in the overall canon that links them all together. Following the events in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Dominique Thorne reprises her role as Riri Williams. Now an MIT student, Riri returns home and deals with conflicts in technology and magic. As fans will recall, in the 2022 movie, Riri created her own Iron Man-like suit of armor, proving that she's a downright genius. With just six episodes in the short series, Ironheart will complete Phase Five of the MCU. Anthony Ramos, Lyric Ross, and Alden Ehrenreich also star, while several others, including Sacha Baron Cohen, have undisclosed roles. Stream Ironheart on Disney+. Countdown (June 25) If you've been missing Jensen Ackles since Supernatural ended and you're waiting for his return as Soldier Boy in The Boys universe, Countdown will satisfy your fix. Ackles stars in this crime drama as Mark Meachum, an LAPD detective tasked with working alongside a covert task force looking to solve the murder of a Homeland Security officer. As Mark and the team investigate, they uncover an even bigger conspiracy brewing that puts everyone in the city in danger. If you love shows like The Night Agent, Countdown could be Amazon Prime Video's answer to that smash hit Netflix show. Jessica Camacho (All Rise), Eric Dane (Grey's Anatomy), and Violett Beane (Death and Other Details) also star. Stream Countdown on Amazon Prime Video. Squid Game season 3 (June 27) Cue the ominous music as Squid Game is back for its third and final season. While it was a long wait between seasons 1 and 2, it has only been six months since season 2 premiered, which ended with a devastating cliffhanger. The South Korean dystopian survival thriller centers around a sick and twisted game that pits desperate people against one another in deadly versions of classic children's games to win a huge cash prize. Serving as social commentary on capitalism and class disparity, Squid Game runs deeper than the violence. Season 2 left off with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) rallying players to fight back. But unbeknownst to him, his new friend Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun) is the Front Man, the mastermind who runs the entire operation. It will be an exciting conclusion to the story that was only intended to be a single season long. But the incredible reception led to these two final seasons that will bring justice, heartache, or likely both. Stream Squid Game on Netflix. Smoke (June 27) Inspired by the podcast Firebug, Smoke stars Taron Egerton as Dave Gudsen, a detective who works with Detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett), a talented arson investigator, to try and stop two serial arsonists from burning down all of the Pacific Northwest. The crime drama is inspired by supposed real events — the story of a fictional serial artist that many believe might actually have been a confession. Created by the same team behind Black Bird, which also starred Egerton and was produced by Apple Studios, Smoke also features John Leguizamo, Greg Kinnear, and Anna Chlumsky among its cast. Stream Smoke on Apple TV+.

13 hardest-working actors you somehow still don't know by name

2. William Fichtner Above William Fichtner (Photo: IMDB) The man has serious main villain energy, even when he's playing a morally grey bureaucrat. From The Dark Knight to Armageddon to Prison Break , he's the guy you trust to deliver exposition while glaring over his glasses. You don't know his name, but you fear his authority. 3. Luis Guzmán He's the MVP of gritty supporting roles. Whether he's in a Scorsese film, a Paul Thomas Anderson fever dream or Wednesday on Netflix, Luis Guzmán brings equal parts charm and chaos. He's the unofficial mayor of 'that guy' city. 4. John Carroll Lynch Above John Carroll Lynch (Photo: IMDB) You may not remember the name, but you definitely remember Marge Gunderson's sweet, worm-loving husband in Fargo . He's also played serial killers ( Zodiac ) and sweet dads ( Crazy, Stupid, Love ), and once wore clown makeup as Twisty on American Horror Story . Range? Infinite. 5. Judy Greer Above Judy Greer (Photo: IMDB) Judy Greer was asking to be on this list. After all, her book is titled I Don't Know What You Know Me From: My Life as a Co-Star . She's everyone's best friend, ex-wife or overlooked sister. From 13 Going on 30 to Jurassic World , Greer has the market cornered on 'women who get interrupted mid-sentence'. One day she'll lead a film where no one talks over her—and we'll all cry. 6. John Michael Higgins Above John Michael Higgins (Photo: IMDB) John Michael Higgins is the king of faux-earnestness. Whether he's playing a smug commentator in Pitch Perfect or a neurotic boss in Great News , the actor is the kind of guy who will pronounce 'resume' with an accent on both Es, and you'll believe him. 7. Margo Martindale Above Margo Martindale (Photo: IMDB) She is so iconic that she played herself in BoJack Horseman . Yet you still know her as one of the snooty neighbours in Practical Magic . Margo Martindale brings gravitas to every role, whether it's in Justified , The Americans or August: Osage County . She doesn't chew the scenery—she fillets it. 8. Gary Cole Above Gary Cole (Photo: Fox via IMDB) 'Yeahhhh, I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday.' With that one line in Office Space , Gary Cole secured a permanent spot in pop culture. Since then, he's played dads, creeps and conservative pundits, often all in the same role. See more: 10 comedians who delivered their best work in serious roles 9. Christopher McDonald Above Chris McDonald (Photo: IMDB) Wasn't he Shooter McGavin? Wasn't he the Dean in Sydney White ? Wasn't he one of the greasers in Grease 2 ? Shooter McGavin is his forever legacy, but Chris McDonald has done so much more. From sleazy lawyers to grumpy dads to news anchors who definitely get fired off-screen, he's the perfect guy to deliver a line with a side of smug. 10. Melanie Lynskey She's Drew Barrymore's kind sister in Ever After and Reese Witherspoon's friend in Sweet Home Alabama . She's the quiet emotional wreck you root for, from Heavenly Creatures to Yellowjackets . Melanie Lynskey can steal a scene with one look and a sigh. The only reason you forget who she is is because she's that good an actress. Did you even know she's from New Zealand? Don't miss: 12 best Hollywood films about Hollywood 11. Clancy Brown Did you just confuse Clancy Brown as the guy who played Raiden in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation ? Easy mistake. That's James Remar, by the way. Brown played Raiden, but only in the animated series. He also voiced Mr Krabs and became the face of The Kurgan in Highlander . Clancy possesses a presence that commands attention, making you sit up straighter whenever he appears on screen. 12. Richard Kind Richard Kind is the human stress ball in khakis. From Spin City to Inside Out , he's the voice of nervous optimism and light existential dread. You'd trust him with your taxes and your emotional breakdown. 13. Kyle Chandler Above Kyle Chandler (Photo: IMDB) Maybe you don't remember the Early Edition. Apart from playing Coach Taylor in Friday Night Lights , Kyle Chandler has been an FBI agent, a CIA agent, a suspicious husband or some combination of all three. The actor is Hollywood's go-to guy for 'rugged with a conscience'.
