Studded sandals are a huge trend right now — here are 15 of the best pairs to add to your wardrobe
Boho's fashion takeover is showing no signs of slowing down. From disc belts to fringed handbags, it feels like it's 2004 all over again. A major part of the free-spirited, boho aesthetic are sandals, so it makes sense that studded styles are blowing up right now. From Birkenstocks recently released Rivets collection, to Havianas viral collaboration with Barcelona-based cool girl brand Gimaguas, embellished, open-toe footwear has become a summer must-have. Actress Julianne Moore confirmed the trend last month, when she stepped out in a pair of New York label Khaite's Boden studded leather sandals. Worn with white linen trousers and tinted aviator sunglasses, this look went straight to the top of our moodboard. Now's the time to tap into the trend — perfect to pack for summer holidays or don on warm days in the city, there's a pair of studded sandals to suit everyone. Comfy and stylish, a pair of slide-on sandals are a must-have in everyone's wardrobe. Birkenstock's much-loved Arizona sandal got a boho makeover last month, with the rivet-covered style coming in six different colours (the Gizeh and the Boston styles are also available). The high-street also has plenty of slip-on styles to offer — we love the olive green colour of this M&S pair, which also come with built in footbed support. Love them or loathe them, flip-flops are undeniably the shoe of the summer thanks to The Row. Studs make this humble shoe just that bit more interesting, and will spice up the simplest of summer outfits, from jorts to white dresses. A low heel can go a long way. This chunky block pair from Valentino are what dreams are made of — it's another fashion house majorly pushing the boho agenda. Zara's studded kitten heels look much more expensive than they are, and Michael Kors' Merriam pair are perfect for day-to-night dressing. All of these are just crying out to be worn with a floaty maxi dress — make sure you show off that ankle-strap detail! Teva's will always be a part of our summer shoe rotation, and this silver-studded pair are bang-on trend. Isabel Marant is yet another boho brand to covet, and these tan Jopee sandals prove exactly why. Think of a thong sandal as a cousin to the flip-flop — they just have more structure and foot coverage. Wear with midi skirts, romantic blouses and chunky disc belts. Netflix raises forecast on promise of Stranger Things finale
Netflix beat Wall Street's expectations in its quarterly results last night and posted a bullish revenue outlook as it hopes to release a string of hits in the second half of the year. The streaming group reported second-quarter revenue of $11.08 billion, up 16 per cent year-on-year and ahead of analyst estimates of $11.06 billion. Net income rose 8.1 per cent to $3.1 billion, ahead of expectations of $3 billion. Despite the upbeat outlook, shares in the $543 billion company were $12.72, or 1 per cent, lower in after-hours trading in New York at $1,261.45. In the year to date, the stock has risen 42 per cent. The California-based company, which was founded in 1997, released hits during the quarter including Sirens, starring Julianne Moore, and the third season of Squid Game, the South Korean series about a deadly contest. The company said it was optimistic heading into the second half of the year, with a slate of planned releases including the Stranger Things finale, the Canelo-Crawford live boxing match, and Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2. Netflix raised its full-year sales forecast to a range of $44.8 billion to $45.2 billion, up from $43.5 billion to $44.5 billion, which it said primarily reflected the weakening of the US dollar, as well as healthy membership growth and ad sales. The company has about 300 million paid memberships. It has stopped reporting quarterly subscriber numbers this year, shifting the focus for investors towards revenue and profit forecasts. The group has diversified its business model since the end of the pandemic, adding advertising sales and live events to its subscription model. Netflix said it expected to report third-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion, ahead of analyst estimates of $11.3 billion. It has forecast third-quarter net income of just under $3 billion. The company is aiming to boost its valuation to $1 trillion by 2030. Ted Sarandos, the chief executive, said in April that Netflix had an addressable market of $650 billion in consumer spending and it was currently 'about 5 per cent of that'.

I Think Netflix's New 'Messy Girl Summer' Category Missed a Few Titles, but I've Got You
You've probably noticed that Netflix likes to group certain shows and movies into categories while you browse their interface. Among the most prominent in my own feed are headings like "Lazy Day Comfort Binges," "Critically Acclaimed Witty Buddy TV Shows" and "Award Nominees" -- I guess I give off lazy but prestigious vibes. (The algorithm gets me!) While browsing recently, I stumbled on a new, seasonal category that caught my eye: Messy Girl Summer. This category features about 35 titles, all offering some take on multifaceted women. Netflix shows that appear under the category include the newish Julianne Moore-Meghann Fahy dark comedy Sirens, Ginny & Georgia, Glow and the brand new Lena Dunham-penned rom-com, Too Much, which is hovering in Netflix's Top 10 at the moment. There are also a bunch of movies on the list, including Amy Schumer's pregnancy comedy Kinda Pregnant, Todd Haynes' psychological drama May December and the rom-com He's All That. "Messy Girl Summer" is a broad term evoking female characters who are allowed to be flawed, weird, vulnerable or secretive -- and that's a combination of traits that has worked for Netflix for years. One of the platform's first hit shows was Orange Is The New Black, a show filled with messy women in prison. But that show has fallen off most people's radar, and thus, it was left off this list. In fact, there are a lot of titles that aren't on this list but probably should be. Netflix really could have blown this category out and had some fun with it. It's OK, I'll step in. If I were curating Messy Girl Summer, I'd start with the show that's the progenitor of the genre, Sex and the City. Back when appointment television was still a thing, that show was essential Sunday-night-in-the-summer viewing. (Its sequel, And Just Like That, is currently tormenting longtime fans every week over on HBO Max, but it's just not the same.) Also missing from Netflix's list are the documentary Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, about one woman's years-long relationship with a man who didn't exist, the kinda-weird Irish crime drama Bodkin, the Japanese series Asura about four sisters whose lives are thrown into chaos when their dad's affair is discovered, or the Mexican erotic drama Playing With Fire. Every woman on each of these shows is a mess or is dealing with one in some way or another; they absolutely deserve to be included. Need more messy girl movies? Nothing messier than One of Them Days (friendship/rent is due mess), To All The Boys I've Loved Before (romantic mess), or documentaries like Con Mum or A Deadly American Marriage (real-life mess). To All the Boys I've Loved Before Netflix I'm all for trendy, zeitgeisty slang (if for no other reason than to make my kids uncomfortable when I use it), so messy girl summer doesn't bother me, but it did make me realize that when you're labeling women, messy is an easy shorthand for the Venn overlap of "flawed" and "chaotic." Usually, "flawed" male protagonists aren't "chaotic" as much as they are "tortured" or "vulnerable" -- instead of "messy," they get to be "complicated." For shows about men like that, I suggest Dept. Q, Lupin, Breaking Bad or Bodyguard. (I guess complicated men tend to either be in law enforcement or on the run from the law.) Honestly, you can shoehorn pretty much anything into a category if you try -- we all contain multitudes and we're all a mess somehow, right? Which is probably why we like watching shows and movies about people whose lifestyles are even more complicated and messy than our own.

This box office flop is the best film of the 21st century
Director Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 dystopian thriller Children of Men starts with a bang – literally. As the film opens, actor Clive Owen's character Theo pops down to the corner cafe to grab a cup of coffee in grimy, inner-city London. It's 2027, two decades since worldwide infertility pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. The cafe is packed, as people crowd to watch a TV announcing that the youngest person in the world – a man named Diego, who was the last known person to be born 18 years earlier – had met a violent end, stabbed by an autograph hunter in Buenos Aires. Theo takes his coffee back out to the street. And then the cafe blows up, with everyone inside. Our 25@25 series will finally put to bed the debates you've been having at the pub and around dinner tables for years – and some that are just too much fun not to include. It's a startling opener to a film that, despite rave reviews, struggled to even make back its budget at the box office in 2006, but has emerged as one of the most prescient films of the 21st century. Based on P.D. James' 1992 novel The Children of Men, the film follows the cynical, world-weary Theo as he's commandeered by a refugee liberation group run by his old flame Julian (Julianne Moore). They need his help to get refugee Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey) to safety, because she's carrying a huge secret: She's the first woman to fall pregnant in 18 years. The film unfolds as the sort of dystopian chase movie that'll be familiar to fans of shows like The Handmaid's Tale and The Last Of Us. But the world-building in the film is something else. We're never told why humanity suddenly became infertile, we only see what damage it's caused, how nihilistic humanity has become knowing that they'll be the last generation on earth. Theo passes by scenes of devastation, violence and hopelessness throughout the film, and they don't appear to register because it's just how life is now. Danger abounds – one incredible one-take shot sees Theo and the refugee group travelling by car through the apparent safety of a forested area, all breathing a sigh of relief that they've made it out of the chaos and violence of the city. Within seconds, an armed gang emerge from the forest, ambushing them for reasons unknown. They manage to escape, but not without the shocking, violent death of one key character. It's harrowing, edge-of-your-seat viewing as the camera pans around the car to capture the action – and now considered one of the best one-shot scenes in the history of cinema. The film ends on an ambiguous note, a final scene which some viewers interpret as a 'happy ending', while others aren't so sure. Perhaps that ending, coupled with the grim tone of the film, would go some way to explaining why C hildren of Men wasn't a box office hit upon release. But word spread among those who did see it, and in recent years it's appeared on many critics lists of the best films of all time. Multiple rewatches over the past two decades have affirmed my initial impression of Children of Men: It's my favourite film released so far this century. Don't agree with me? Vote in our poll below. As part of our 25@25 series celebrating the biggest and best of the past 25 years, the entertainment team at has collated a shortlist of the 10 best movies of the 21st century, from Oscar winners to family favourites to a mind-bending romance and an iconic Aussie road movie.
