For the second year in a row, June Squibb is generating Oscar buzz. The 95-year-old actress, who received critical acclaim for her first leading role in the 2024 comedy Thelma, is once again in awards contention with Eleanor the Great. Helmed by Scarlett Johansson in her feature directorial debut, the film premiered to mixed reviews at the 2025 Venice Film Festival — but all were glowing for Squibb. Written by Tory Kamen, Eleanor the Great focuses on the titular Eleanor (Squibb), who moves to New York from Florida after the death of her best friend and roommate, Bessie, a Holocaust survivor. The story takes a turn when Eleanor finds herself sitting in a Holocaust survivors' support group and proceeds to share Bessie's story as her own. Complications ensue. When does it come out? Sony Pictures Classics will release Eleanor the Great on Sept. 26. Who's in the cast? Joining Squibb onscreen is an impressive ensemble that includes Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor as Roger, a local news anchor; Jessica Hecht as Eleanor's daughter, Lisa; Erin Kellyman as Nina, an aspiring journalist; and Rita Zohar as Bessie, Eleanor's lifelong best friend. Who's behind the scenes? Collaborating with Johansson behind the camera are cinematographer Hélène Louvart, editor Harry Jierjian, and composer Dustin O'Halloran, an Oscar nominee in 2017 for his score for Lion. Producers for the film include Johansson, Jessamine Burgum, Charlotte Dauphin, Kara Durrett, Keenan Flynn, Jonathan Lia, Celine Rattray, and Trudie Styler. Awards potential There's already early buzz surrounding Squibb, who kicked off her awards campaign by presenting alongside Johansson at the 2025 Oscars. Following the film's premiere in Cannes back in May, the veteran actress earned a standing ovation for her performance, which critics described as "a pure joy from start to finish," and "the finest performance of her career." Squibb currently sits in 11th place in Gold Derby's early Oscar odds for Best Actress at the 2026 Academy Awards. While she may be seen as an underdog for the Oscar, her chances could improve at the Golden Globes, where six nominees are recognized in both the drama and comedy/musical categories. However, any recognition for the film beyond Squibb's performance is considered an outside shot at this stage. If nominated for an Oscar, it would mark Squibb's second Academy Award nod. Scarlett Johansson had to contend with some "extraordinary circumstances" on the set of Jurassic World Rebirth. The 40-year-old actress — who stars in the new movie alongside the likes of Jonathan Bailey, Luna Blaise and Mahershala Ali — filmed Jurassic World Rebirth in places like Malta and Thailand, and Scarlett admits that she found it to be an "insane" yet rewarding experience. Speaking to People, she shared: "We all laughed a lot, and we were thrown into such extraordinary circumstances physically. "Half our set would wash away, and then ten minutes later it would grow too large, and there's no continuity to anything because the sun was moving in. It was just insane." Scarlett recalled one particularly scary experience when they were filming in Thailand. She said: "When we first got to Thailand, we had to do a camera test of the full costume and all that stuff and just putting all the pieces of the costume together and then standing in a mosquito-infested bush, I was like, 'This is really happening'." In another scene, Scarlett wore a harness to navigate her way down a cliff. And the Hollywood star now admits that it was a painful experience. She said: "We wore harnesses under our actual harness. "You have a movie harness that looks like a harness, then you have an actual harness that's hooked up to a line, because you're not actually abseiling, you're on a stunt rig. "I was happy to say goodbye to the harness!" Meanwhile, Scarlett recently made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, the drama movie that starred June Squibb. The actress subsequently revealed that she found directing to be a "really rewarding" experience. She told Extra: "I have a different perspective on just the process of, you know, pre-production and then what goes on after we all leave. I think, as an actor, you're hoping that the director sees kind of what you were doing and follows, you know, pulls the right thread and all of that stuff, but you don't know. Scarlett Johansson thinks cinemagoers will have to watch Jurassic World Rebirth "through the crack in [their] fingers". The 40-year-old actress stars alongside the likes of Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend and Jonathan Bailey in the new sci-fi action film, and Scarlett has been told that the new movie is the "scariest" in the history of the franchise. The Hollywood star — who has Rose, ten, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac — told E! News: "I've been talking to some other Jurassic fans and they say this is the scariest one, but I would let my daughter see it. "It's still appropriate for the family. You just gotta watch it through the crack in your fingers." Despite this, Scarlett — who also has Cosmo, three, with husband Colin Jost — loves that her children can watch the new movie. The actress said: "When I saw the first Jurassic Park movie, I was 10 years old in the theatre and part of the impression it left on me was the jump scares, the laughs, but the terrors for sure.
