‘People ripped off my denim jacket after Musu Musu Haasi', recalls Dino Morea: ‘Bigger stars suddenly contacted me, people were going nuts'

Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi marked many firsts when it released in 1999. The musical romantic drama, directed by late Raj Kaushal, marked the debut of actors Dino Morea, Sanjay Suri and Twinkle Khanna's sister Rinke Khanna. It was also the debut of playback singer Shaan and beginning of the iconic music duo Vishal and Shekhar. While the film couldn't make a mark in its audience mind, the song'Musu Musu Haasi Deu' shot Dino Morea to fame, making him the heartthrob of Bollywood. His fandom was such that when he once went for the promotion of a film, his fans ripped off his denim jacket in excitement. In a recent interview with Just Too Filmy, Dino Morea recalled the time when they launched the film and the kind of craze it created among the audience. He said, 'That release and the kind of adulation we got at that time was phenomenal. I remember going doing a premiere in Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. I didn't expect people to show up the way they showed up.' 'I remember, I walked out of the cinema in Kolkata and people ripped my jacket. It was a denim jacket. People were going nuts. It was more so because of the song Musu Musu Haasi. People loved it. Delhi was insane, Bangalore too because it is my hometown. I was in shock. I understood the reach of cinema.' Dino Morea shared how this love and craze was all organic and real as no PR existed back then. We were covered so much for being in a relationship. It was all organic. There was no PR at that time, we didn't do PR, it was pyaar. We didn't call photographers to come and stand and wait and take a picture. None of that happened. It was just organic. It was not set up. That was the beauty of it.' While the song 'Musu Musu Haasi' made Dino Morea the heartthrob of Bollywood, it was his the 2002 film Raaz that helped him make his mark in the industry. He shared, 'Raaz cemented my foothold in the film industry. People would say, 'okay, that's a huge success. It's kind of arrived.' That gave me a lot of confidence. Raaz brought respect to horror films because before that there was nothing good in terms of horror. Raaz was primarily a love story which resonated with people around the world. That movie set me up in the industry. Suddenly the bigger stars started to congratulate me. I could see the difference.' Dino Morea recently featured in the Netflix series The Royals starring Ishaan Khatter, Bhumi Pednekar, Nora Fatehi and Zeenat Aman, among others.

(Also read: Neil Nitin Mukesh says many in the industry celebrate when a film doesn't work, admits it has become 'toxic') In conversation with Just Too Filmy, Neil said that producer Jhamu Sugandh offered him both Johnny Gaddaar and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na on the same day but asked to choose one. 'I loved Jaane Tu… It was a love story, and that was the trend," Neil said. However, the actor wasn't comfortable with people calling him a "chocolate boy" hence he went for a more uncoventional, darker role which led him to choose Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddaar. The New York actor further said, "Jaane Tu… was destined for Imran. It was an honour that I even got to read the film. I will never say that I rejected Jaane Tu… I didn't have the honour of working on that film. If I had the privilege of working on both, I'd eat both of them and give my 100 percent but unfortunately for me, I couldn't work on Jaane Tu." Directed and written by Shriram Raghavan, Johnny Gaddar was a neo-noir crime thriller which marked Neil's debut and earned him rave reviews. Produced by Adlabs the film also starred veteran actor Dharmendra Zakir Hussain, Rimi Sen, Vinay Pathak, Govind Namdeo, Dayanand Shetty and Ashwini Kalsekar. Neil Nitin Mukesh reveals Imran Khan starrer 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' was first offered to him: 'Was asked to choose between this and Johnny Gaddaar'

Neil Nitin Mukesh recently revealed that he was also offered Imran Khan starrer ' Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na ', around the same time — and had to pick between the two contrasting scripts for his launch. Choosing Between Romance and a Thriller In conversation with Just Too Filmy, Neil revealed that he was offered Johnny Gaddaar and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na on the same day by producer Jhamu Sughand. While Jaane Tu... fit the popular trend of romantic college dramas, Neil was hesitant to embrace the 'chocolate boy' image that people often associated with him. Uncomfortable with the label, he leaned toward a more unconventional and intense role, which ultimately led him to choose Johnny Gaddaar for his debut. No Grand Launch, Only Tough Choices The actor also recalled that after meeting producer Jhamu Sughand at a party, he was invited to his office, where he was offered two films—but with a catch. He would have to audition for both and choose only one. At the time, Neil admitted feeling unsure, especially since actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Harman Baweja were set to debut in big-banner films like Saawariya and Love Story 2050. He questioned whether his debut would stand a chance against such high-profile launches. Despite the pressure, Neil auditioned for both roles, but ultimately went with his gut and chose Johnny Gaddaar. 'Jaane Tu… Was Always Imran's Film' He further shared that Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na was always meant to be Imran Khan's film, and he felt privileged just to be considered for it. He clarified that he never rejected the film, but simply wasn't able to take it up due to circumstances. Had he been given the chance to work on both projects, he said he would have given his all to each—but ultimately, he couldn't be part of Jaane Tu. A Star Kid Without a Starry Launch In the same interview, Neil also revealed that despite coming from a celebrated musical lineage—being the son of Nitin Mukesh and grandson of legendary singer Mukesh—he was made aware early on that a grand Bollywood launch wasn't in store for him. At just 13, his father told him clearly that the family's financial priorities lay elsewhere and that he wouldn't be able to invest in launching Neil's film career. The conversation left a young Neil deeply unsettled, marking a turning point in his understanding of the challenges ahead. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na was offered to me first, recalls Neil Nitin Mukesh: ‘I got Johnny Gaddaar and this, was told to choose one'

Neil Nitin Mukesh comes from a film family but unlike many of his peers, he did not get a starry launch in the movies. Instead, Neil made his debut in Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddaar where Neil did not play a traditional hero. In a recent interview, Neil shared that at the time, he was also offered Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, which was a quintessential college romance film, and he was given the option of choosing either one of these movies as his debut vehicle. In a chat with Just Too Filmy, Neil shared that he 'was offered two films on the same day' by producer Jhamu Sughand. 'One was Johnny Gaddaar and the other was Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, which was Imran Khan's debut,' he said. Neil recalled that Jhamu gave him scripts for both these films and asked him to read them both. 'I loved Jaane Tu… It was a love story, and that was the trend,' he said and recalled that at this time, he was often told that he looked like a 'chocolate boy' and Neil did not enjoy this tag. 'This annoyed me and I also thought to myself, 'Is that how I look?' he wondered. Neil Nitin Mukesh said that when he met Jhamu Sughand at a party, he got an invitation to his office. Upon landing there, Jhamu told him that he would be able to take up only one of the two films being offered, and he will have to audition for both. At this time, Neil decided to take a step back as he wondered that actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Harman Baweja were going to get launched with films like Saawariya and Love Story 2050, and he had to wonder if his launch film would hold against these big budget films. Nevertheless, Neil auditioned for both but his 'gut instinct' told him to choose Johnny Gaddaar. If I had the privilege of working on both, I'd eat both of them and give my 100 percent but unfortunately for me, I couldn't work on Jaane Tu.' In the same chat, Neil shared that even though he is the son of illustrious singer Nitin Mukesh, and the grandson of singer Mukesh, he was told at a very young age that he won't get a starry launch. 'At 13, my father told me that I have a daughter and I have to get her married. I also have a younger son who is ten years younger, I have to get him educated. Don't ever think that I can even put Rs 5 in making a film for you. I was 13 and I panicked. I didn't sleep that night,' he said. Neil Nitin Mukesh has been in the movies since 2007. He was last seen in the Zee5 film Hisaab Barabar, and will next be seen in the web series Hai Junoon.
