NFL Stars Don't Belong on the Olympics' Flag Football Field

The National Football League has long dreamed of turning America's favorite game into a global one. At the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, it has its best shot. Flag football will be among the featured sports, and last week, the NFL agreed to allow its players to try out for national teams. Some of the league's brightest stars — including quarterback Patrick Mahomes (before walking it back) and wide receiver Justin Jefferson — have expressed interest in participating.

Flag football will be played for the first time. The Los Angeles Rams head coach, Sean McVay spoke in person with media members on Thursday, 29 May. He said he has come around to the idea of NFL players being on the Olympic team. The event took place at the Los Angeles Rams' training site in Thousand Oaks, California. Sean McVay shared his thoughts during a press meeting. He seemed excited about what the future could bring. Sean McVay says NFL players should get a chance to join Team USA On May 29, 2025, Sean McVay told the media he is a fan of NFL players playing Olympic flag football. I think it would be great if athletes could aspire to represent Team USA in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.' Sean McVay said, 'I think it's great.' He added that 2028 feels far away but players should have the choice. 'If that's something that players say they want to do, then I think it's a really cool experience,' Sean McVay said. He shared that each NFL team may be allowed to send one player. He believes it should be up to the players. Sean McVay said he does not know all the flag football rules but still supports the plan. He also talked about Justin Jefferson, a wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings. Sean McVay said Justin Jefferson sounded excited about the Olympics. That excitement, he said, shows this is a special chance. In October 2023, flag football was added to the 2028 Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Matthew Stafford says he might not play but is ready to coach At the same event, Matthew Stafford, quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, was asked if he would join the Olympic team. He laughed and said, 'Sure. I mean, nobody's going to want me to, but yeah, sure. It'd be fun. I'll coach.' Mathew Stafford may not be playing in 2028. But he showed interest in helping the team. This raises new questions. Will NFL players follow coaches from flag football? Or will they need help from well-known NFL coaches? Are the Vikings QB proof with their current roster? One analyst believes so

Are the Vikings QB proof with their current roster? One analyst believes so The work of Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been masterful ever since he arrived in Minnesota in 2021. As it is currently built, the roster is one of the best in the entire NFL. The skill players are well-rounded, highlighted by the likes of Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson, who are two of the best players at their respective positions. The offensive line is arguably the best in the entire NFL when healthy. The defense of course is riddled with playmakers as well with several of them leading the way at the edge and cornerback positions. All of that leads ESPN's Benjamin Solak to believe the roster is set up for success regardless of who is under center. He writes, "I think J.J. McCarthy could be the 24th-best quarterback in the league next season and the Vikings would still win 12 games. That's the difference between a well-built roster and a haphazardly built one." It is the ultimate compliment you could give a general manager and someone who has made the moves that Adofo-Mensah has made during his tenure. McCarthy should play better than the 24th quarterback though so maybe that will be enough to make it beyond the Wild Card Round of the playoffs?

Ja'Marr Chase on Olympics: It's pretty cool, but I'm not 100 percent on it yet

After NFL owners voted to allow active players to participate in the 2028 Olympics, Justin Jefferson called it 'a dream' to potentially win a gold medal in flag football. But one of his LSU college teammates isn't so sure. On Tuesday, Ja'Marr Chase told reporters that he needs more information to know whether or not he'd like to be a part of the Olympics in a few years. 'I don't know,' Chase said, via Russ Heltman of 'I want to know the timing for us, offseason, in season. I want to know if we're getting paid. I want to know where we traveling every other week or every day, like all that plays a part, because we have an offseason, we have a life. How long would that be? I don't know. There's a lot of questions to it. 'I think it's pretty cool, but I'm not really 100 percent on it yet.' Chase is also thinking about the current flag football players, like Darrell 'House' Doucette, who has noted that he and his peers shouldn't just be kicked to the side. 'We taking they love of the game, and bashing it with our love of the game,' Chase said. 'Now we taking away their love of the game and we killing them. It's a lot, bro, I think it's cool, but I just don't know if I'm 100 percent in on it.' Flag football in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics is set to take place from July 14-21, which is before most training camps open.
