Kennedy Catholic girls advance to the State Quarterfinals

NEW CASTLE, Pa (WKBN) – Kennedy Catholic girls basketball downs Neshannock 50-36 in the Second Round of the Class 2A PIAA State Championships Tuesday night. Watch above for extended highlights! 'What we take away is that you never give up and if you defend, you have a chance to win every game. Offense wins games, defense wins championships,' said Kennedy Catholic head coach Justin Magestro. 'I love to see the red-sea out there. We were supported by our whole community and I love them.' Golden Eagle's senior Madison Pfleger scored a game-high 19 points with four successful three-point shots. Also, senior Layke Fields scored 12 points and sophomore Tori Harvey posted nine. Neshannock's Payton Newman scored 19 and Sophia Bonner 10 points in the loss. The Lancers end the season with a record of (22-3). The Golden Eagles advance to a season record of (20-5). Kennedy Catholic coach hits milestone, Golden Eagles win region title

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (WKBN) – Kennedy Catholic head coach Justin Magestro earned career win number 300 in the Golden Eagles 70-59 win over Wilmington to claim the Region 1 championship on Thursday night. Magestro becomes the 17th basketball coach to reach 300 career wins in Mercer County history. 'I just wanted to get the win,' Magestro said. 'It's all about the kids. We won the region championship. We're 14-0. We accomplished our first goal. And that's what makes me so happy tonight.' Prior to his time at Kennedy Catholic, Magestro spent time as the Reynolds girls basketball coach and he also coached the Sharon boys. The Eagles were led in scoring on Thursday night by Bella Magestro who tallied 29 points. Layke Fields finished with 21 points while Tori Harvey added 11. Wilmington was led by Lia Krarup who scored a team-high 18 points. Reese Bruckner added 16 points, while Karah Deal chipped in with 13 points in the setback. The loss sends the Greyhounds to 19-2 on the season, with both losses coming at the hands of the Eagles. Wilmington finishes the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 18 as they travel to Fairview. With the win, the Eagles improve to 15-5 overall and a perfect 14-0 in District 10 Region 1 play.
