Cubs Advised to Hang Onto Slumping Veteran Justin Turner
Cubs Advised to Hang Onto Slumping Veteran Justin Turner originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs haven't failed to impress this season. After lagging the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by 10 games last season, the Cubs are now dominating the NL Central. Advertisement But among their many productive players, there are also a few obvious laggards. One of which is veteran infielder Justin Turner. This year, Turner is hitting just .214/.310/.274 with one home run in 84 at-bats. He still draws walks at a high rate, but other than that, he hasn't been the productive bench piece the Cubs were looking for when they signed him to a one-year deal (with a mutual option for next year). At age 40, it isn't difficult to understand his struggles. Turner isn't the slugger he once was with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Much has been made of trading Turner in recent weeks; however, one writer thinks this would be a bad idea. MLB analyst Kenneth Teape argues the Cubs will be hampering their team's future, writing this: Chicago Cubs first baseman Justin Turner (3) celebrates while running the bases after hitting a homer in the third inning of the MLB National League game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. Frank Bowen IV/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images 'Chicago would be making a huge mistake trading away Turner; he provides them with much more value than he would bring back in a trade, likely for a low-level prospect at best. A World Series champion and NLCS MVP, his presence means a lot for a team that is lacking playoff experience overall. He is an excellent mentor for the young players, especially someone such as Matt Shaw, to learn from.' Advertisement To Teape's point, Turner wouldn't bring much on the trade market, and his veteran presence would likely be more valuable than the player they receive in return. But there's an interesting counterpoint here as well. If the Cubs don't drop Turner, not only will they miss an opportunity to grab a prospect who will be with the club longer than he will, but it would also mean the Cubs can't replace him on the roster with a more productive option. Either way, there's a drawback and a benefit, but keeping Turner probably won't be a regrettable choice. Pee Dee first responders receive Duke Energy severe weather grants
FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — Florence County first responders are among several Pee Dee agencies receiving grants from Duke Energy to help with severe weather emergency preparedness. Florence County and the city of Florence Fire Department received grants totaling $20,000 and $14,000, respectively. Duke Energy is awarding $500,000 to 38 nonprofit groups and government agencies across South Carolina through its Helping Emergency Response Organizations grant program, also known as HERO. Florence County officials will use the money to pay for a utility task vehicle, or UTV, and road barricades that will help officials prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters, Duke Energy said in a news release. The city fire department will use the money to install a vehicle repeater system for communications equipment to keep lines of communication open when power outages anddamaged infrastructure disable traditional radio systems. 'Reliable communication is the backbone of effective emergency response, and during recent severe weather events, we've experienced firsthand how dangerous gaps in communication can be — for both our firefighters and the citizens we serve,' Florence Fire Chief Shannon Tanner said. 'This funding will allow us to implement a much-needed vehicle repeater system, enhancing our ability to coordinate resources, protect lives and maintain operational control when conditions are at their worst. We're grateful for Duke Energy's continued partnership and commitment to helping communities like Florence build resilience where it matters most.' Marion County is also receiving a $20,000 grant that will help fund emergency management software used to plan for and monitor evacuation activities during emergencies and track structures within a flood zone. 'The past offers us valuable insights into the outcomes of previous disasters; insights we can study, record and learn from,' said Justin Turner, the county's emergency management director. 'This knowledge empowers us to make informed, critical decisions for our communities. By learning from history and planning ahead, we equip ourselves to face the uncertainty of tomorrow's storms.' Others receiving grants include: City of Hartsville, $17,500 to help pay for a utility task vehicle, or ATV, and road barricades that will enhance the city's ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural disasters. Dillon County Emergency Services, $20,000 to buy a standby generator for use when severe weather events create multiday power outages. City of Lake City, $6,000 to buy additional handheld multiband radios so firefighters can communicate more effectively. Georgetown County, $12,000 to pay for additional radio equipment to allow the emergency operations center to communicate with state and other partner agencies when other communication systems are inoperable after a severe weather event. 'The one thing our company and communities learned in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene is you can never be too prepared for severe weather events,' said Tim Pearson, Duke Energy's South Carolina president. 'Now more than ever, we are committed to providing our fellow first responders the tools and training they need to handle whatever Mother Nature throws our way.' * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. May 24 - Elly De La Cruz went 2-for-3 with a home run, a stolen base and four RBIs to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-4 victory over the visiting Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon. TJ Friedl also had two hits and Santiago Espinal scored twice for Cincinnati, which snapped a three-game losing streak. Andrew Abbott (4-0) picked up the win as he allowed one run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out two. Despite allowing a homer to Carson Kelly to begin the ninth, Emilio Pagan bounced back to notch his 13th save. Justin Turner added a solo homer and Matt Shaw had three hits -- including a pair of doubles -- for Chicago, which had its three-game winning streak come to an end. Cubs starter Colin Rea (3-1) surrendered six runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out eight and walked three, both season-highs, while throwing a season-high 108 pitches. Cincinnati jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on De La Cruz's ninth home run of the season, a 387-foot line drive into the right-field bleachers. Chicago cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning when Turner led off with his first home run as a Cub, a 406-foot drive to left-center. The Reds extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Gavin Lux led off with an opposite-field double down the left-field line, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Will Benson's sacrifice fly to the wall in center. Cincinnati added three more runs in the sixth inning. De La Cruz stroked a two-run single, stole second and scored on a single by Spencer Steer. The Cubs cut the lead to 6-2 in the seventh when Kelly led off with a single, advanced to third on a Shaw double and scored on Ian Happ's groundout. They got another run closer in the eighth when Seiya Suzuki led off with a double to left-center, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pete Crow-Armstrong. Kelly made it 6-4 in the ninth when he cracked his ninth homer of the season off the foul pole in left. One out later, Shaw lined a double to left to bring the tying run to the plate. Pagan bounced back to strike out Happ and get Kyle Tucker to fly to right to end the game. --Field Level Media

Elly De La Cruz homers, drives in 4 runs as Reds hold off Cubs 6-4 to snap 4-game skid
CINCINNATI — Elly De La Cruz drove in four runs and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-4 Saturday to end a four-game losing streak. Justin Turner and Michael Kelly homered as the Cubs had a three-game winning streak snapped. Kelly came into the game in the fifth inning after catcher Miguel Amaya suffered a left oblique strain. De La Cruz and the Reds struck quickly in the first. After Santiago Espinal drew a walk with one out, De La Cruz lined a fastball by Colin Rea (3-1) into the seats in right-center for a 2-0 lead. The dynamic 23-year old shortstop added a two-run base hit to center in the fifth inning to extend the Reds' advantage to 5-1. The top of the Reds' order went 5 for 11 and accounted for five runs scored. Emilio Pagán got his 13th save in 15 opportunities. Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott (4-0) allowed only one run in six innings. The solo shot by Turner was the first homer the left-hander had allowed in 23 2/3 innings and 100 batters. Rea, who had allowed only 10 runs (nine earned) in seven previous starts this season, gave up six runs in five innings. Turner's homer off the left-field foul pole to lead off the ninth got the Cubs within two runs. Matt Shaw doubled with one out, but Emilio Pagan struck out Ian Happ and got Kyle Tucker to fly out to end the game. Turner is the first Cubs player age 40 or older to homer in a game since Gary Gaetti in 1999. Ernie Banks, Davey Lopes, Walker Cooper and Charlie Root are the other Cubs who have homered in their 40s. Cubs right-hander Ben Brown (3-3, 5.44 ERA) faces Reds lefty Nick Lodolo (4-4, 3.22 ERA) in the series finale Sunday. ___ AP MLB:
