Man's body recovered in Drakensberg, murder case opened

KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of murder after finding a man's body in the Drakensberg below Cathedral Peak. Due to the inaccessible terrain, the Utugela district office received assistance from the Pretoria air wing, Pietermaritzburg search and rescue and K9 units from Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith. On Wednesday, officials were airlifted to the area pointed out by a witness. The witness discovered a body in the Thonyelana River at the base of a 40m waterfall, police said. 'The witness also alleged he suspected a second victim on a ledge about 30m from the base of the waterfall. 'Members were hoisted onto the ledge and conducted a search. 'Clothing was discovered on the ledge with negative results regarding a second victim. 'The body of the 39-year-old Lesotho national was recovered from the Thonyelana River and airlifted to the nearest accessible road.' TimesLIVE

Police investigate ‘improvised explosive' which led to I-5 closure, suspect arrested

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Several blocks in Northeast Portland closed on Thursday afternoon as police searched the area following the arrest of a man accused of making a makeshift bomb. Portland resident Alexander R. Wick, 38, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center for allegedly manufacturing a destructive device, among other charges. Portland police began searching the area near NE 15th Avenue and Alberta Street just before 1:30 p.m., and officers expect to be in the area for multiple hours. However, investigators said there is 'no articulable ongoing danger to the community.' Cyclist who died in 'tragic' collision with MAX train identified as former Portland mayoral candidate 'We all were dumbfounded when the situation came by. And it wasn't until I was starting to putting context clues together. I saw the bomb squad vest, I saw the K-9 units, and it literally looked like federal officers that were surrounded. So, like, this is something big. This is something bigger than we're all thinking,' said Meaghan Sutton, who witnessed the explosives investigation unfold in Northeast Portland on Thursday. Matty Sallin, who lives nearby, said it was 'fascinating to see that there's drama going on.' He added that he found it 'despicable' that someone would allegedly throw things at drivers to hurt them as they were traveling down the highway, something police accused Wick of doing over the weekend. Wick allegedly slashed tires and threatened drivers while claiming to have a bomb on Saturday, according to Portland police. That night, officers responded to I-5 at the Northeast Failing Street pedestrian bridge, where the man was allegedly throwing cones and other objects into the lanes of traffic before slashing the tires of any vehicles that stopped. He allegedly threw boards with nails in them into lanes of traffic and had a stop sign on a portable stand. 'The suspect threatened drivers with a screwdriver and claimed that he had a bomb,' police said. 'Officers searching the area located a bucket with a possible explosive device inside.' 'Due to the significant potential danger to the community, I-5 had to be closed to all traffic,' police said. The Metro Area Explosives Disposal Unit investigated the device, which they determined was an 'improvised explosive.' The man — later identified as Wick — had allegedly fled the scene, but was later located by a detective and taken into custody. No additional suspects are being sought. A search warrant has granted investigators permission to search the neighborhood near the man's home 'in a slow, careful, methodical manner.' Police said they believe people may have taken video of the incident on Saturday and are asking anyone with footage to come forward. Stay with KOIN 6 News as this story develops. Behind the Story: It's not all licks and treats with Treasure Coast's law enforcement K-9s

Breaking News Reporter Corey Arwood spent time at each of the three sheriff's offices on the Treasure Coast with their K-9 Units. He watched the training process in some specially-made facilities and learned about some new developments in K-9 protection. One of those developments is that several sheriffs offices and police departments have upgraded use of technology for their K-9 Units with an app to help them analyze performance better than before. Why was this an important local story to report? Everyone loves the cute, obedient police dogs sometimes seen around the Treasure Coast in their bullet-proof dog vests. But do you really know how they can protect you? Did you know there's at least 55 of them working to keep you safe? We take you on a tour of upgraded facilities where the working dogs learn their trades, show you the dogs in action with their trainers, and give you an idea of a law enforcement dog's daily schedule. We explain a change in record keeping at some K-9 units on the Treasure Coast that offers a previously unavailable detailed view of the results of dog deployments. These dogs are considered 'less-lethal uses of force.' Their discoveries of weapons or narcotics, for example, could lead to decades of jail time for someone in a traffic stop, or to the tracking and rescue of a missing person. What surprised you about this story? Not all law enforcement agencies on the Treasure Coast are using technology to keep track of and analyze what their K-9 dogs and handlers are doing. Some agencies use more traditional reporting methods like a combination of incident details documented through their dispatch system, and training records kept on paper in binders. That's been described as a 'data silo' where records are stored independently and remain disconnected without correlation or analysis. So any time an officer wants to identify the amount of cocaine collected in a month or the number of people bit last year, for example, they have to go through records of dispatch notes and collect and calculate the results. Was there anything you couldn't answer when reporting this story? The developers of the service in use at two sheriff's offices did not respond to calls or voicemails seeking information and comment. As with some other data retrieval and storage systems, questions remain about who maintains ownership of that data and for what purposes can it be used or shared during or after discontinuation of the service.
