NWKRTC staff held for attacking KKRTC bus driver
Hubballi: Two NWKRTC employees were arrested for attacking and threatening the life of a KKRTC bus driver. The accused obstructed the govt duty of a KKRTC bus near the Hubballi-Gadag ring road. Police seized a bike and arrested NWKRTC conductors, Manjunath, 50, and Mahadevappa, 42. Deputy commissioner of police (law and order) Mahaning Nandagavi informed TOI that a case was registered against those who attacked the bus on the day of the transport employees' strike, and two were taken into custody. A case was registered at Keshwapur police station.

Bus services in Kalyana Karnataka disrupted
Pic: Passengers experienced difficulties due to the lack of KKRTC buses in Ballari Kalaburagi: The transport services across the Kalyana Karnataka region experienced significant disruption on Tuesday due to a bus strike. While most state transport department buses remained non-operational, Vijayanagara district maintained services. A few KKRTC buses resumed service under police escort in Koppal. KKRTC Koppal divisional controller RB Jadhav stated that stones were thrown at one bus in Kukanur, but no other serious incidents were reported. Only 640 private vehicles operated in the district. Police protection was arranged for the bus travelling from Gangavathi to Nippani. Likewise, several buses on different routes were also given police security. These buses followed behind the police vehicle. At certain stations, police officers were actively encouraging passengers to board the bus. Vice chancellor Prof BK Ravi ordered the cancellation of the second semester exams of PG students of Koppal university. According to Thimmareddy Hira, KKRTC Hospet division's divisional controller, services remained normal across the district except Harapanahalli taluk, with staff reporting for duty and additional private drivers recruited. Kalaburagi saw minimal services, with only 20-25 buses operating instead of the usual 250. Police commissioner Sharanappa SD inspected the situation. Yadgir established a control room to regulate fares, with minimal services operating. The border district of Bidar maintained services through Maharashtra and Telangana buses. Private buses and minivans were permitted to operate at bus terminals. Raichur recorded 50% operational services, supplemented by regular interstate buses from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Almost all bus terminals were filled with private buses and minivans that were authorised to transport passengers.

Guarantee schemes have benefited crores of people, says CM
As the Karnataka government's Shakti scheme crossed 500 crore trips, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah celebrated the occasion in a ceremony in Indi in Vijayapura district on Monday. To mark the occasion, he performed pooja to buses, issued tickets, and interacted with women beneficiaries in the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) bus stand in Indi. The Chief Minister highlighted that the Congress had kept its promise of implementing the five guarantees and that they had been successfully implemented, benefiting crores of poor people. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ministers H.C. Mahadevappa, Dinesh Gundu Rao, M.B. Patil, H.K. Patil, Shivanand S. Patil, Sharan Prakash Patil, MLA Yashwantrayagouda Patil, and guarantee committee members, among other leaders, were present.

Shakti scheme to cross 500 crore rides today
BENGALURU: The Congress-led state government's key guarantee scheme, Stree Shakti that allows women to travel in government buses for free, will achieve a significant milestone by crossing 500-crore rides on Monday. To mark the occasion, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will symbolically issue tickets to women passengers. After the Congress government took charge in 2023, Shakti was the first of the five guarantees to be launched on June 11, 2023. From then till July 11, women have taken 497.79 crore rides in the four bus corporations — the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The total ticket cost is Rs 12,614 crore. Including the rides by women, all the four bus corporations recorded 837.72 crore total rides ever since the Shakti scheme was launched. BMTC saw the highest number of women riders at 158.10 crore, followed by KSRTC 151.21 crore, NWKRTC 116.53 crore and KKRTC 71.94 crore.

KKRTC generates ₹2,375 crore revenue through Shakti scheme in two years
The Congress-led government's Shakti scheme, which offers free travel to women commuters in government buses, has generated a traffic revenue of ₹2,375 crore to the Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) in the last two years. The women passengers in eight districts coming under KKRTC jurisdiction, have benefited around 67.91 crore free rides since its launch in June 2023 to May 2025 and the total ticket revenue generated was ₹2,375 crore. As per the data provided by KKRTC, the scheme had witnessed a surge in number of women passengers; to cope with the increased demand for public transportation the KKRTC has increased its schedules from 4,028 to 4,689 schedules, with an increase of 661 schedules. Similarly the number of daily trips too went up from 22,214 to 27,528 trips. Nearly 9.42 lakh women in eight districts of KKRTC jurisdiction avail benefit of Shakti scheme every day. Of the eight districts, Kalaburagi district recorded the highest number of trips by women passengers with 13.55 crore trips generating a ticket revenue of ₹459 crore followed by Vijayapura district with 13.09 crore trips and a ticket revenue of ₹427 crore. Raichur district recorded 8.41 crore trips with a revenue of ₹330 crore; Bidar district with 8.19 crore trips generated a revenue of ₹236 crore. While Koppal district recorded 7.78 crore trips with ₹278 crore revenue, Vijayanagar district with 6.96 crore trips generated a revenue of ₹268 crore. In Ballari district, there were 4.94 crore trips with ₹189 crore and Yadgir district recorded 4.95 crore trips with a revenue of ₹184 crore in the two years. Of the ₹2,375 crore, the State government has cleared a sum of ₹1,800 crore towards ticket reimbursement and ₹575 crore was pending. The KKRTC has recently recruited 600 driver-cum-conductors, of which 500 were deployed as conductors; even then the corporation was facing shortage of conductors due to increase in number of daily shuttles, an official said.
