11-year-old calls 911 on Texas mom after she set the family dogs on fire: Police

A Texas mother has been arrested after her 11-year-old son called 911 and reported that she "believed he was the devil" and was in the process of "burning the family dogs," authorities said. Rusk County sheriff's deputies responded to the home in Henderson, about 140 miles southeast of Dallas, around 1 p.m. on May 17, according to a Facebook post shared by the agency. While on the way to the scene, 911 dispatchers got a second call from a nearby address regarding a woman who had just arrived at their home with blood on her hands and who told them that her parents had been killed, the sheriff's office said. When deputies arrived at the home, their investigation led to the detainment of the 32-year-old mother, who had been driving her car with her four children, ages 1 to 11, inside, according to the sheriff's office. According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by USA TODAY, deputies initially met the woman's parents at the family's home. While deputies were speaking with the parents, the mother drove up to the scene with her children in a car, rolled down her passenger side window and screamed, "Help, help, help me someone is trying to kill me," the court document said. The woman's parents retrieved the children from the vehicle, while a deputy tried to calm her down, the affidavit said. While speaking to the woman, the deputy said she exhibited signs of "paranoia," began "sweating profusely," and had "abnormally fast breathing." Also, while speaking to deputies, the mother did admit to killing the family's two dogs in front of her children, according to the affidavit. During the sheriff's office's investigation, deputies found canine remains in a fire that was burning in front of the woman's home, the Facebook post says. Based on this and deputies' initial findings, the woman was arrested and charged with two felony counts of cruelty to animals and four counts of endangering children, the sheriff's office announced. She was subsequently booked on a $400,000 bond. Rusk County Sheriff Johnwayne Valdez told KLTV that Child Protective Services is also investigating the situation. As of May 21, it is unclear if the woman has legal representation. USA TODAY is not naming her to protect the identity of her children. Valdez told USA TODAY on May 21 that the woman will be mentally evaluated soon, "but as of yet, she has not." Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. Texas Mom Accused Of Serving Boozy Jell-O Shots At Elementary School Party

A Texas mom is facing a charge of reckless bodily injury to a child after she allegedly served alcoholic Jell-O shots at a Christmas party for her daughter's fifth-grade class. Teresa Isabel Bernal, 33, of Tyler, was arrested Monday for the Dec. 20 incident at her daughter's elementary school after the assistant principal told a police officer they believed a parent had brought gelatin shots containing booze to a class party. Police interviewed 15 students who claimed to have imbibed the juiced-up Jell-O, and almost all of them reported having stomach pains and headaches afterwards, according to documents reviewed by Law & Crime. One boy told police he vomited twice that day, while another student said he 'passed out.' Another student said in an interview a few weeks after the incident that he had six shots, got dizzy and fell and felt like he couldn't get back up on his feet. Two teachers who sampled the Jell-O shots also suspected they had alcohol, according to an arrest affidavit. When police interviewed Bernal, she said the Jell-O came from a small sweet shop run out of a private home, but claimed she was unaware they contained alcohol. The arresting affidavit notes that the ad for the holiday-themed Jell-O shots Bernal purchased for the kids' party has 'Smirnoff' written on the bottom in thin white font, KLTV reported. When police interviewed the owners of the sweets shop in January, they told investigators they thought Bernal ordered alcoholic shots on purpose. One of the owners showed the officer a screenshot of a text from Bernal sent on the day of the party, where she asked if the shots had alcohol. After the owner reportedly affirmed they did and asked why, Bernal simply texted back, 'kids.' The officer who interviewed witnesses said some of the teachers thought it was odd that Bernal allegedly brought the shots, as she was 'an involved parent and was present at many functions at the school.' Police received lab results on March 6 showing the Jell-O in the shots did have booze, and a warrant for Bernal's arrest was issued April 10. Bernal was booked into the Smith County Jail on Monday on a charge of reckless bodily injury to a child, a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. She was released the same day after posting a $75,000 bond. No attorney is listed for Bernal at this time.
