The dam authorities started the release of floodwater on Sunday afternoon at 3,500 cusecs, which was increased to 17,000 cusecs in under 12 hours, indicating the severity of the rain in its catchment areas, mainly Shivamogga and Thirthahalli taluks in Shivamogga district and Sringeri in neighbouring Chikkamagaluru district. The dam is located at Gajnur near Shivamogga city. "Due to heavy rainfall in Sringeri and Thirthahalli, the Tunga River's water flow has surged.
