Madani gov't trolled for using KSN to ban civil servants from joining 'Turun Anwar' rally

DETRACTORS have questioned the rationale behind the call for civil servants to stay away from this Saturday's (July 26) PAS-inspired 'Turun Anwar' rally. This is because civil servants must adhere to the pledge enshrined in the Rukun Negara, particularly by upholding the principle of loyalty to king and country, according to Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. 'They cannot attend. Civil servants recite the pledge every day, every week,' justified Shamsul who succeeded Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali on Aug 10 last year. 'Have they forgotten? Be loyal to the king and country,' he said after launching the Association of Former Students of Mara Junior Science Colleges (ANSARA) Sports Carnival 2025 in Putrajaya yesterday (July 20). While Shamsul did not specify if the nature of disciplinary action to be taken on errant civil servants, a majority of commenters to the NST Online Facebook post of Shamsul's message felt that it is unbecoming of the Madani government to even use the KSN as its protective shield. After all, they recounted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had in fact instigated civil servants to take to the streets to protest against injustice inflicted on him, notably his sacking as deputy PM following which the Reformasi movement was born. After all. Saturday is an off day to most civil servants, henceforth it is their right to decide what they wish to do during their spare time so long as their action does not disrupt their workflow. Therefore, Shamsul's directive is deemed as both 'army twisting method and double standard'. As a learned commenter put it, the KSU cannot deny the basic rights and freedom of all citizens as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, namely the right to free speech and the right to assemble and association. '(The) KSU is clearly fear mongering and threatening civil servants,' he attested. As a commenter aptly pointed out, the Madani government has nothing to fear if it is doing a good job 'unless this Madani (government) is so unstable that it feared that the opposition might influence their (civil servants) support towards this government'. Another contended that 'a democracy would not order such a thing but civil servants can be reminded that action can be taken against them if their behaviour during such a rally led to arrest and/or detention'. In fact, a commenter opined that civil servants are duty-bound 'to speak out if the government is harming the country'. The bottom-line as one commenter noted, 'public sector workers will STILL go to work tomorrow if the government falls or a new government comes in'. As 'they work for the country, the King and not a POLITICAL PARTY', he urged PMX 'not to be arrogant but to understand hardship of sorts the rakyst are experiencing from Perlis to Sabah'. – July 21, 2025 Editor's Note: A recent Utusan Malaysia report citing Perikatan Nasional (PN) Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden has estimated a turnout of 300,000 (up from 50,000) at the 'Turun Anwar' rally slated to be held at Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur this Saturday (July 26). This is in stark contrast to Kuala Lumpur Acting Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad who previously expected 10,000 to 15,000 people to attend. He nevertheless confirmed that the organisers have informed the Dang Wangi district police headquarters about the rally following which some 2,000 officers and personnel will be deployed to ensure the rally runs smoothly and to safeguard the participants and the public. Malaysia, Singapore To Strengthen Ties In Govtech, Housing And Public Sector Reform

PUTRAJAYA, July 20 (Bernama) – Malaysia and Singapore are now exploring strategic cooperation in three main areas – GovTech, public housing and public sector reform – to strengthen public service delivery. Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN) Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said these were the main areas of collaboration identified during his three-day official working visit to Singapore beginning Friday (July 18). 'We want to learn from Singapore. Firstly, in regard to GovTech, as they have already implemented it, while we are in the process of launching our own. 'Secondly, their affordable housing through the Singapore Housing Board. And thirdly, we want to learn about reforms in the public service,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after launching the Sports Carnival of the Alumni Association of MRSM Malaysia (ANSARA Malaysia) here today. Shamsul Azri said Singapore welcomed the cooperation and exchange of best practices between the two countries to improve the quality of public service. 'Singapore welcomed our proposals… we also had sessions with them to discuss strategic cooperation between the Malaysian government and the Singaporean government,' he added. Earlier, in his speech, he urged Malaysians to adopt a healthy lifestyle through sports and good nutrition. Citing Singapore as an example, he said their average life expectancy is 84 years, compared to about 73 to 74 years in Malaysia.

Locals celebrate as historic rainfall brings lake levels almost back to normal: 'It's great for the start of the summer'

Officials in Kansas are excited after a historic rainfall helped raise a local lake's levels close to normal for the start of summer. According to KSN, Cheney Lake, located outside Wichita, Kansas, is sitting just a foot below its normal level after receiving massive rainfall on June 17, 2025. The lake's elevation now sits at 1,420.61 feet, and the conservation pool is 93.89% full. According to the National Weather Service, the 4.19 inches of rain Wichita received on June 17 was the fourth-highest single-day June rainfall ever recorded, and the highest single-day total since 1965. Despite the massive rainfall and the lake's rise, Wichita remains in Stage 2 of its drought plan, which limits water use for irrigation and lawns to once a week for non-critical outdoor watering. The conditions are based on the lake's 12-month average, and the plan could be revised as soon as July 1, 2025. The drought followed by a massive storm is emblematic of the issues that continue to plague our planet, courtesy of our changing climate. As Earth heats up, weather patterns become less predictable and more severe. Periods of prolonged drought are often followed by massive storms that dump large quantities of rain in a short period, which can destabilize the soil and increase the risk of landslides. It makes farming increasingly difficult, especially in places like Kansas, which heavily relies on agriculture in its economy. The western United States has been particularly hard hit by the aridification associated with our changing climate; reservoirs in California are now at full or near-full capacity for the first time in years, thanks to historic spring rains. Residents were also thrilled with the lake's rise. "It's great for the start of the summer because it means you can finally get your family out here, and we can do things that we wanted to do that we couldn't do the last couple of years out here, so it's pretty awesome," Wichita resident Josh Nelson said. We are not bound to any political party, but to the oath of office we have taken to uphold the Constitution and the rule of law. "Loyalty to leaders is not individualistic in nature but a means of strengthening national stability, enhancing administrative effectiveness, and ensuring the continuity of lawfully formulated national policies," he said. At the same event, Ab Rauf and Shamsul Azri jointly launched the MADANI Pocket Book, which is available in six languages - Malay, English, Mandarin, Tamil, Iban and Kadazan.
