‘Doing Black Caviar things': David Hayes does a deep dive on what makes Ka Ying Rising a superstar sprinter
Doing 'Black Caviar things'. That's how Hall of Fame training legend David Hayes encapsulates his Hong Kong superstar and raging $1.80 The Everest favourite Ka Ying Rising. Racenet this week asked Hayes to do a deep dive on what makes his star sprinter so freakish. He gave a remarkable insight into the racing phenomenon. 'I used to watch Black Caviar gallop very closely, I would say he is the only horse I've ever had do Black Caviar things,' Hayes told Racenet. 'I read that Black Caviar had an incredible stride length compared to other horses when she was let go in a race. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'His action goes from being normal but when you push the button at the 300(m) or whenever Zac (Purton) decides to go, his stride gets much, much bigger. 'The thing to my eye that he does very differently to most good horses is that his trackwork is good enough, but when he gets into a racing situation he has got this incredible ability at high speed to lengthen his stride and put the race away. 'I haven't measured it and I haven't done any scientific testing of him, I can't see the point. 'But I have probably watched 30,000 horses and I'm sure I am right. 'I have had some incredible and exciting moments and some exciting horses, but I think he is the most consistently exciting horse I've had who just keeps putting up incredible performances and runs that are so dominant. 'If the best track worker I've ever had is a 10 out of 10, this horse would be a seven out of 10 worker. 'But he's a 10 out of 10 at the trials and a 10 out of 10 at the races.' HE DOES IT AGAIN! 🚀 Ka Ying Rising makes it 12 straight wins, four Group 1s and a HK$5 million Speed Series bonus with victory in the 2025 Chairman's Sprint Prize... @zpurton #FWDChampionsDay | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 27, 2025 • Truck-driving hobby trainer sets sights on Sydney first Ka Ying Rising was last seen in April when he made it 12 consecutive wins, producing a devastating victory in the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize at Sha Tin. The world's top ranked sprinter will race in the $20m The Everest in October for new slot-holder the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Hayes can't wait to show him off to the Australian public, feeling he is the closest sprint sensation that racing fans have seen to Black Caviar who was famously undefeated in 25 races. • 'Took my breath away': How Angela Jones wowed Gai Waterhouse Hayes feels Ka Ying Rising has already displayed similar brilliance to the likes of Black Caviar and Winx – he just needs to maintain the rage and sustain the winning momentum in the future to be rated alongside those former greats. 'If he goes for another 12 months, at the rate he is going, he will end up one of the all-time greats,' Hayes said. 'What makes a horse an all-time great is the length that they stay at the top. 'For instance, Black Caviar three years, Winx four years. 'In their first year of brilliance, I think my horse is every bit as good as those two. 'But he's just got to last, if he can hold this form for the length of time that they did, he will be one of all-time greats. 'If he gets the job done in The Everest it would be one of the highlights of anyone's career, to bring a horse down to the richest turf race in world and win. 'I would just love everyone to see him, he's worth seeing.' In betting on The Everest, confirmed runners Private Harry ($6) and Briasa ($8) are so far considered the ones most likely to give Ka Ying Rising a serious challenge.

Ka Ying Rising to return home after The Everest: ‘He's avoiding big-money temptation'
Ka Ying Rising will spend most of next season at home in Hong Kong. Photos: Kenneth Chan The world's best sprinter Ka Ying Rising will return straight home to Hong Kong after his tilt in the Group One The Everest (1,200m) with his owner keen to show his commitment to Hong Kong racing. On a winning run of 12 races which includes four Group Ones, the David Hayes-trained superstar was imperious last season - rising up to a rating of 132 from 111. He dismantled his sprinting rivals by going faultless in the Hong Kong Speed Series, winning the Group One Centenary Sprint Cup (1,200m) and Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m) before crowning his season with a devastating win in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m). His success in the Chairman's Sprint Prize was boosted by the second Satono Reve finishing runner-up in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m) at Royal Ascot and Ka Ying Rising himself is getting ready to go international with a trip to Australia. HE DOES IT AGAIN! 🚀 Ka Ying Rising makes it 12 straight wins, four Group 1s and a HK$5 million Speed Series bonus with victory in the 2025 Chairman's Sprint Prize... @zpurton #FWDChampionsDay | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 27, 2025 He will line up in the Hong Kong Jockey Club's slot for the A$20 million (HK$102 million) Group One The Everest (1,200m) on October 18, but his connections have resisted the temptation to go for further riches abroad. Hayes had considered running Ka Ying Rising in the Group One Champions Sprint (1,200m) at Flemington or the Russell Balding Stakes (1,300m) at Rosehill - with Rosehill race boasting a A$1 million bonus to the Everest winner - but connections have decided to prioritize the sprinters Group One Hong Kong Sprint (1,200m) preparation. 'It's been decided that we'll give Ka Ying Rising one run in The Everest, and then the owner is keen to concentrate on Hong Kong,' said Hayes. 'He's avoiding the temptation of the big money in Australia. He's decided win, lose or draw, to come back after the race. The owners really committed to Hong Kong racing and the Hong Kong Jockey Club have been so helpful with the slot that he wants to do the right thing by the club.' What a return!? 😳 Star sprinter Ka Ying Rising defies top-weight to land the Class 1 HKSAR Chief Executive's Cup with @zpurton for David Hayes at Sha Tin... 🚀#SeasonOpener | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) September 8, 2024 Ka Ying Rising began his perfect campaign last year by winning off a huge weight of 135lb in the Class One Chief Executive's Cup (1,200m) before going on to collect seven Group races. The same starting point is set to be employed by Hayes before he sets sail for Australia, provided he trials well beforehand. 'I'm pretty confident he'll be running on opening day - if he trials well the week before he'll run in the Chief Executive's Cup,' said Hayes. The 62-year-old sits a clear second in the trainers premiership, seven winners behind leader John Size after a double at Sha Tin on Saturday evening. Trainer David Hayes. Hayes is looking to finish the campaign with a flourish but any hopes of pipping Size were likely extinguished by the luck of the draw, with a lot of his runners reserved out of Wednesday's Happy Valley fixture. That leaves him with just a trio of runners on the third-to-last meeting of the season, but Hayes has remained typically upbeat. 'I've got lots of reserves, I'll have a big hand on Sunday and a very big hand on the final day - it's just the way it fell with the races,' said Hayes. 'It'd be dreaming to think we could win, John has to have a wipe for the last three meetings - I'm very happy to run a clear second.'

Zac Purton officially secures eighth premiership, while Ellis Wong lands maiden Hong Kong treble at 1,002-1
Star Australian is 59 wins clear at the top of the premiership table with only 50 races left in the season It's been a mere formality for months but Zac Purton officially secured his eighth title at Sha Tin on Saturday, banging in a treble to move 59 wins clear in the jockeys' premiership with only 50 races left in the season. Purton moved to 126 winners for the campaign – four short of last season's tally with five meetings remaining – and while he's miles off his Hong Kong record tally of 179 victories, he's striking at a ridiculous 23 per cent. 'It's really nice to win another one. Apart from having a stack halfway through [and missing seven weeks through injury], I've had another good season with a few highlights with some big horses,' Purton said, referring to champion sprinter Ka Ying Rising. 'All in all, I'm very happy again.' Purton opened his account aboard Tony Cruz-trained $1.75 chance Gentlemen Legacy in the Class Three Nam Chung River Handicap (2,000m) before completing a running double aboard exciting three-year-old Copartner Fleet in the first section of the Class Four Beas River Handicap (1,200m). Domination at Sha Tin! 😤 Copartner Fleet gets off the mark in emphatic style and shapes as a 3YO with a big future racing in Hong Kong... @zpurton #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 28, 2025 Having his second career start after running a close second on debut last month, the Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained Copartner Fleet dictated proceedings from the front and put the race to bed early in the straight, eventually saluting by three-quarters of a length to reward those who backed him into $1.8. While Purton's first two victories came aboard progressive gallopers on the turf, he completed his three-timer atop a far more exposed horse on a wet-slow all-weather track. Backed late to jump the $3.2 favourite, Fashion Legend travelled nicely just forward of midfield in the Class Four Sha Tau Kok River Handicap (1,650m) before whistling past his rivals in the straight to salute by a length and a quarter. Fashion Legend's second Hong Kong success at start 23 marked the first leg of a double for his trainer David Eustace, who later took out the Class Four Shan Pui River Handicap (1,400m) with Riding Together. 'He's just taken to the dirt. He's had a couple of wins on it now where everything has gone beautifully,' said Eustace of Fashion Legend, who has won twice from six starts since switching surfaces. 'Good barrier [three] and the pace was not too strong, which allows him to stay on the bridle because he's just got a short sprint over the mile. He's gaining a bit of confidence on the dirt.' Elsewhere on Saturday's twilight card, Ellis Wong Chi-wang punched home his first Hong Kong treble with wins aboard King Oberon, S J Tourbillon and Ariel. Riding at his first meeting since reaching 45 career winners and having his claim reduced from 7lb to 5lb, Wong picked up where he left off before his two-meeting suspension with a breakthrough 1,002-1 three-timer. On fire, @elliswong05! 🔥 Our apprentice scoops a Sha Tin treble with a superb front-running ride aboard Ariel for David Hayes... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 28, 2025 'This is my first time to have three winners in Hong Kong, so I'm very happy,' Wong said. 'These past few months I have had more support and I really appreciate that. I still have a lot to learn but when the opportunities are coming, I have been lucky to take advantage. 'I'm trying to learn a lot from Zac, from Hugh [Bowman], who is very patient, and I love Vincent [Ho Chak-yiu].' The win of Ariel completed a double for David Hayes after the earlier success of Gallant Crown, with the Australian declaring he's 'no chance' despite drawing within seven victories of John Size in the race for the trainers' title.

Satono Reve in need of Magic in QEII Jubilee
ASCOT Horses from Ireland and France have flown miles to Royal Ascot to contest the £1 million (S$1.73 million) Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m), but Satono Reve has travelled over 13,000km from Japan. No horse has made the journey and won in 10 tries to conquer Britain's most iconic race meeting, but no Japanese contender has been as good as Satono Reve. The Lord Kanaloa six-year-old is a Group 1 winner in Japan, but is probably better known for finishing second to Ka Ying Rising in the HK$22 million Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) at Sha Tin on April 27 - which is no better endorsement given that Ka Ying Rising is the best sprinter in the world. Satono Reve arrived in Newmarket on May 2 to be given plenty of time to prepare and has been stabled at James Horton's yard. "After arriving from Hong Kong, Satono Reve had some time to recover before steadily building up his training," said his trainer Noriyuki Hori. "He had his final gallop on June 11, a five-furlong (1,000m) piece of work on the July Course at Newmarket, ridden by Ryan Moore. "Although it's a different environment from what he's used to, he's been coming along well thanks to the warm support of James Horton, his team and everyone involved." Satono Reve will be ridden by Joao Moreira. The Brazilian jockey known as the "Magic Man" was in the saddle when Satono Reve won the Group 1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1,200m) at Chukyo in Japan on March 30. "He's such a good horse," said the globetrotting jockey. "I'm excited about riding him at Ascot. He just needs to bring that type of form here to be competitive." The French-trained Lazzat leads the opposition, with trainer Jerome Reynier confident of a good performance. "He has such a high cruising speed," said the French trainer. "His last run was his first over as short as 1,200 (metres), but he can take a good grip and stay on well. I think he is the perfect match for the race." Last year, Inisherin was the easy winner of a Group 1 sprint at Royal Ascot on fast ground, the Commonwealth Cup (1,200m). The Shamardal four-year-old was subsequently rather disappointing but returned to win the Group 2 Duke of York Stakes (1,200m) on May 14. Trainer Kevin Ryan could not conceal his delight at York. "That's a relief. I was nervous but it went well," he said. "He'll improve for that run. I'm delighted because he's such a lovable, sensible horse." The formidable duo of trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore, who have already claimed five races after three days at Royal Ascot, command respect with their representative Storm Boy. The only three-year-old in the race, the Justify colt moved from Australia to Ireland this year. Last year he won sprints up to Group 2 level for leading Sydney trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, but finished last when favourite on his UK debut last month in Ireland. The Coolmore ward will surely do better, as O'Brien would not run him if he was not confident of a better performance. The race in which Storm Boy was last was won by the Clive Cox-trained James's Delight, who is a live outsider in Saturday's contest. HKJC
