Indie dog goes missing in Bengaluru, army doctor who rescued him flies home for search: Report
In a quiet Bengaluru neighbourhood, a family continues to search for their furry friend who vanished without a trace over a week ago. Kalu, an 18-month-old Indie dog has been missing since the night of June 28, leaving his family devastated, The Times of India reported. Among four abandoned pups, Kalu was the only one to survive after Harshita took them in and nursed them back to health with veterinary help. The bond was instant — she named him Kalu and brought him along as she transferred to Guwahati, and later, Belagavi in Karnataka. Due to her demanding schedule in Belagavi, Kalu was relocated in November 2024 to her family home in Govindarajanagar, Vijayanagar, where he quickly developed a routine of night walks after dinner. But on June 28, Kalu stepped out for his usual stroll and never returned. The family — Kusuma BH, a government employee; her son Bharat; and Harshita — has been working tirelessly to bring Kalu home. Within days of his disappearance, the family received a possible lead — a tipoff that Kalu was seen near a bar and restaurant in Basaveshwaranagar, about three km from home. By the time they arrived, he was gone again. Over 500 posters featuring Kalu's image have been distributed across Basaveshwaranagar, Mahalakshmipuram, Kurubarahalli, JC Nagar, and other localities. A reward of ₹15,000 has been announced for any credible information about his whereabouts, the report stated. The family has also turned to social media for help. When Harshita learned about Kalu's disappearance through a family group message, she immediately flew to Bengaluru from Arunachal Pradesh and has since joined the daily search, combing streets from dawn to dusk, Kusuma told the publication.

Army doctor flies to Bengaluru to join search for dog she rescued in Arunachal hills
Bengaluru: A family in Govindarajanagar, Vijayanagar, is eagerly waiting for the return of one of its members — Kalu, an 18-month-old Indie dog rescued from the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Kusuma has announced a reward of Rs 15,000 for anyone who helps in tracing Kalu. Over 500 handbills, featuring Kalu's picture and Kusuma's contact number, have been pasted on walls and distributed among the residents of Basaveshwaranagar, Mahalakshmipuram, Kurubarahalli, JC Nagar and surrounding areas. "Besides, we've taken to social media, seeking help from netizens. But as of now, we haven't heard anything about him," said Kusuma, who works for the public information office. Interestingly, Kalu was found in the hilly terrain of Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking to TOI, Kusuma said her daughter Harshita found him in Dec 2023. "Harshita was working with the army and camping on a mountain. One day, she found four puppies there. They were weak and suffering from some infections. She brought them to her camp and, with the help of a veterinary doctor, nursed them. Unfortunately, three of the puppies died while Kalu survived," she said. Later, Harshita was transferred to Guwahati, and then to Belagavi in Karnataka this year. "Kalu lived with her in Guwahati. However, she found it difficult to look after him in Belagavi. In Nov 2024, Kalu came to our house here," Kusuma said. According to Kusuma, Kalu goes out for a short walk every night after dinner. "On the night of June 28, he went out but failed to return. Seeing the handbill, a person called us on July 1, saying he had seen Kalu near a bar and restaurant in Basaveshwaranagar. Filled with hope, we rushed to the place, but he had gone by then," she said. Harshita was in Arunachal Pradesh when Kalu went missing. "We hadn't told her about Kalu's disappearance. After searching for two days, I posted his picture in our family WhatsApp group, and Harshita learned about the situation. She took a flight to Bengaluru. I search for Kalu from 5am to 9am, as I have to go to office. But Harshita searches for him all day and returns home late at night," she said.

Punjab: Amritsar Rural Police arrests two key drug traffickers, recovers 6 Kg Heroin
Amritsar (Punjab) [India] June 8 (ANI): In a significant breakthrough against trans-border narco-smuggling, Amritsar Rural Police arrested two key traffickers near Village Bhakna and seized 6 kilograms of high-grade heroin. Acting on specific intelligence, a police team intercepted Gurditta alias Kalu and Captain near Village Bhakna while they were transporting a high-grade heroin consignment on a motorcycle. According to the officials on Sunday, the heroin consignment had been smuggled into India by Pakistan-based handlers and was further meant for distribution across Punjab. An FIR under the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Gharinda. Police said that another accused was currently absconding and efforts were underway to track and arrest him. The DGP said that preliminary investigations are still ongoing to unravel the full extent of the drug supply chain, including cross-border linkages. Earlier on Friday, Punjab Police Counter-Intelligence (CI) unit in Amritsar has successfully identified and dismantled a cross-border illegal arms smuggling network with connections to Pakistan. As a result of this operation, two operatives involved in the smuggling activities have been arrested, Punjab Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, said. According to a release, those arrested are Sukhchain Singh, a resident of Daoke in Amritsar, and Jugraj Singh, a resident of Bhakna Kalan in Amritsar. The police teams also recovered eight sophisticated pistols--three 9MM Glocks, four Px5s, and one .30-bore pistol--from their possession and impounded their black motorcycle, which was used for transporting the consignments. The DGP said that preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused were acting under the directions of a Pakistan-based smuggler identified as Noor, a resident of Manihala in Pakistan, who has been using drones to drop weapon consignments from across the border. The arrested accused were further distributing the arms to gangsters across Punjab, intending to fuel criminal activities in the state, he said. Sharing operation details, the DGP said that CI Amritsar received specific intelligence about the retrieval of a weapon consignment from the village of Bhaini Rajputtan in the jurisdiction of Gharinda in Amritsar. Two from MP held with mephedrone worth Rs 52L
Ahmedabad: The City Crime Branch on Sunday arrested two persons with 525 g of mephedrone (MD drug) near the AMTS bus stop under the foot overbridge at the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. This action was part of a special drive against narcotics by the crime branch. Based on a tip-off, the crime branch team conducted a raid and detained two persons. The seized quantity of mephedrone is valued at Rs 52.5 lakh in the illegal market. Along with the drugs, police also seized two mobile phones worth Rs 10,000, cash, one PAN card, and one Aadhaar card, stated a crime branch release. The arrested accused are identified as Ajay Prajapati (41) and Anandi Damor (41), both residents of Ratlam district in Madhya Pradesh. According to preliminary investigation, a person named Shahrukh, residing in the Vatva area of the city, is believed to be the main operator behind the drug supply. He allegedly sourced the mephedrone from a man named Kalu in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. Kalu sent the drug consignments via different couriers using trains from Mandsaur to Vadodara and then through private vehicles to Ahmedabad. The delivery was usually made near the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. DCB police registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against Prajapati and Damor and have launched an investigation to trace Shahrukh and other individuals involved in the drug trafficking network.

30-yr-old man gets life imprisonment for murder
Keonjhar: The additional district judge's court here on Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his fellow villager in 2019. Sankar Behera of Hundabanspal village was found guilty of killing Kalu Behera over past enmity. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. On failing to pay, he would have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment. According to additional public prosecutor Prafulla Kumar Patra, the incident took place on May 26, 2019. The accused took Kalu out of his house around 7 pm in the presence of family members. When Kalu didn't return home that night, his family launched a search but couldn't locate him. The following day, villagers discovered Kalu's body near Bahutia bridge. His elder brother, Darshan Behera, filed a murder complaint at Pandapara police station. During investigation, police found Sankar killed Kalu and disposed of the body near the bridge. The accused was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. Additional district judge Mamita Das pronounced the verdict after examining 24 witnesses.
