You expect him to take 10 wickets? Kapil Dev defends Anshul Kamboj after debut
Kapil Dev has defended Anshul Kamboj after his lacklustre start to life in India colours during the Manchester Test. Kamboj was roped in as a cover for the Indian team as Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep were ruled out of the 4th Test due to injuries. Kamboj was expected to make a big impact after his exploits during India A's tour of England, but the pacer wasn't impressive and conceded 89 runs in 18 overs and got just a wicket. The Haryana pacer's selection was questioned by many, but Kapil Dev jumped to his defence. The former India captain asked if everyone was expecting a 10-wicket haul from him in his first outing and tipped the pacer to bounce back. advertisement"What do you expect from a debutant, that he should take 10 wickets? You have to assess his potential. If he's good enough, he will bounce back. Everyone is nervous when playing their first game. The result may not be ideal, but I believe the ability is there, and that's more important," said Kapil Dev at the launch of the second-half schedule of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).Kapil Dev defends Shubman Gill Kapil Dev also urged people to give time to Shubman Gill, whose captaincy calls have been under the scanner. The legendary all-rounder said that Gill will learn from his mistakes and get better. "Give him time. This is his first series, he will commit mistakes and there will be many positives over the period of time, he will learn. There is no problem if he is learning. There will be mistakes, but he is learning from his mistakes, that is very important," he Dev also said that the ongoing series will be a learning step for the young team. "This is a young team, they are getting the opportunity to play and in the coming days these players will win. It is just a new team. Any new team in the world takes time to adjust. Gill is a new captain, and he will learn a lot and I think this series will be a learning step," said Kapil Dev. India ended up drawing the Manchester Test and remain alive in the series. - EndsTune InMust Watch

'What Do You Expect From...': India Legend Backs Under Fire Anshul Kamboj
Anshul Kamboj struggled with a lack of speed and control in the Manchester Test against England, conceding 89 runs for 1 wicket in his 18 overs. The legendary Kapil Dev has backed young Anshul Kamboj after his much-criticised debut at Old Trafford in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. As the Haryana and Chennai Super Kings seamer was taken for plenty in a series of uninspired bursts with questions being raised over his fitness amidst dip in pace. However, former India captain Kapil believes it is too soon to judge his capabilities and critics shouldn't jump the gun on the 24-year-old. 'What do you expect from a debutant, that he should take 10 wickets? You have to assess his potential. If he's good enough, he will bounce back. Everyone is nervous when playing their first game. The result may not be ideal, but I believe the ability is there, and that's more important," Kapil told reporters. Despite only 25 first-class matches behind him, Kamboj was fast-tracked into the senior Indian Test squad as a backup seamer for the English tour following impressive performances for Haryana and India A. Not initially part of the main squad, the right-arm pacer came in as cover for the injured Akash Deep and was handed his debut cap in Manchester. However, the young talent's lack of readiness for top-level challenge was exposed by the Bazball brigade, as openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley hammered his first spell. Kamboj did come back with the wicket of Duckett on 94 but finished the innings with disappointing figures of 1 for 89 off his 18 overs, going at an expensive economy rate of 4.90. Even as India searched for inspiration in a collectively poor bowling effort and conceded a mammoth 669 all out, Kamboj was barely called upon by skipper Shubman Gill, who instead banked on his spinners – Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar – to provide him some control. It remains to be seen whether the young seamer would be retained for the fifth and final Test of the series, starting July 31. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. "Do You Expect Him To Take 10 Wickets?": Kapil Dev Slams Young India Star's Critics
Former India captain Kapil Dev backed pacer Anshul Kamboj, who had a lukewarm debut against England in the fourth Test in Manchester. Coming as a replacement of Arshdeep Singh in the squad, the right-arm pacer had big shoes to fill-in as he was named directly into the Playing XI after Akash Deep got injured. However, his debut was not an ideal one as he leaked 89 runs in 18 overs and took just one wicket. Amid all the criticism for his performance, Kamboj found some backing from the 1983 World Cup-winning captain, who urged the fans to give some time to the young pacer. Kapil stated that it is too soon to judge his potential as the team needs to assess Kamboj performance in the upcoming games. "What do you expect from a debutant, that he should take 10 wickets? You have to assess his potential. If he's good enough, he will bounce back. Everyone is nervous when playing their first game. The result may not be ideal, but I believe the ability is there, and that's more important," Kapil told media at the launch of the second-half schedule of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI). He also said the England series will serve as a valuable learning experience for young India skipper Shubman Gill and urged critics to give him some time to grow into the leadership role. "Give him time. This is his first series, he will commit mistakes and there will be many positives over the period of time, he will learn. There is no problem if he is learning. There will be mistakes, but he is learning from his mistakes, that is very important," he said. Gill's India saw England pile up the highest-ever Test total scored at Old Trafford, Manchester during the fourth Test of the series. England made a mammoth first innings score of 669, with Joe Root and Ben Stokes slamming tons. "This is a young team, they are getting the opportunity to play and in the coming days these players will win. It is just a new team. Any new team in the world takes time to adjust. Gill is a new captain, and he will learn a lot and I think this series will be a learning step," he added. (With PTI Inputs)

Kuldeep Yadav Was Considered For Selection In 4th Test, Claims Report. Then, This Happened
Kuldeep Yadav 's absence from the Indian team for the 4th consecutive match on the tour of England left many baffled. With players like Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy injured, the sentiment in the Indian cricketing spectrum was that Kuldeep would get the nod for the Manchester Test. However, the team management eventually went with Shardul Thakur and Anshul Kamboj as the additions in the bowling unit, once again showing inclination towards bowlers who can also bat. A report in the Times of India has claimed that Kuldeep was backed for selection by a part of the Indian team management for the Manchester but eventually a 'safety first' approach was adopted. Considering India are already 1-2 down in the series after three matches, the decision left many ex-cricketers and pundits stunned. "A part of the management contemplated playing him in the XI, but eventually a safety-first approach prevailed as Kuldeep's batting went against him," the TOI report read. The report further claimed that Kuldeep would even turn up at optional sessions and let it rip against the Indian batters. But, ahead of the Manchester Test, his enthusiasm dipped, as selection looked more an more unlikely. After seeing India's batting collapses in the first couple of Tests, the management went ahead with bowlers who can bat. In this race, Kuldeep lost the race to the likes of Shardul and Kamboj. "I think it's finding when he comes in, how we can find balance and how we can get that batting line-up to be a little bit longer and stronger," India's bowling coach Morkel said on selection matters. "We've seen in the past that we've lost wickets in clumps. Kuldeep is world-class, and he's bowling really well at the moment, so we're trying our best to find ways for him to get in. But unfortunately, with that, just to balance with batting throws it out a little bit." "There's always an option of going in with quicks and picking your six best bat," Morkel added. "All those discussions we have had or we do discuss. But I think so far in this match, the last two Test matches, the guys who have played have done a good job in terms of spin bowling. We were ever so close to winning that Test match at Lord's. We had a great Test match at Edgbaston. So I think so far we've played good cricket, good cricket bar yesterday's bowling performance." Though Kamboj was brought in to shoulder the load being carried by India's marquee pacer Jasprit Bumrah, the former's bowling was so lacklustre that Bumrah ended up bowling nearly twice as many overs as Kamboj in the first innings of the Manchester Test.

IND vs ENG: Did safety-first approach upset India's bowling plans?
MANCHESTER: With every passing day on this tour, 's enthusiasm in the team's nets sessions has visibly dipped. Before the third Test at Lord's, he would even turn up at optional sessions and let it rip against the Indian batters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Coming to Manchester, though, Kuldeep has been taking it easy. He has been the most talkedabout absence in India's playing XI in this series. And as things started unravelling for India at Old Trafford, his non-selection raised eyebrows. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'Kuldeep is world class and he's bowling really well at the moment. We're trying our best to find ways for him to get in. But, unfortunately (we haven't been able to), with just the balance with the batting,' Morkel said. TOI understands there was discussion around Kuldeep's selection before the fourth Test. A part of the management contemplated playing him in the XI, but eventually a safetyfirst approach prevailed as Kuldeep's batting went against him. Kuldeep has been deemed an inferior batter to Shardul Thakur, but Gill's reluctance to throw the ball to Thakur is a giveaway that the Indian captain has very little faith in Thakur the bowler. India vs England rain, weather forecast: Can Shubman Gill-KL Rahul pull off stunning draw? The two lower-order collapses in Leeds at the start of the series unsettled the team management and staying in the game longer by batting long became a priority. 'There's always the option of going in with quicks and picking your six best batters. We do have all those discussions. But, the guys who have played in the last two Test matches have done a good job in terms of spin bowling,' Morkel said, declaring it was Gill's decision to bring so late into the attack in England's first innings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Anshul Kamboj has been another debatable selection. Again, the entire team management wasn't on the same page. On the eve of the Test here, captain had mentioned it was going to be a toss-up between Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna. It is learnt that even the idea of playing Kuldeep over Kamboj was suggested. Kamboj's lack of pace in the first innings has become a major talking point. Playing him two days after he joined the team, after having just recovered from a shin injury, was a big call. It will be unfair to judge Kamboj based on what was seen in the first innings. Morkel said that they were looking at Kamboj to bear most of the workload so that could be used in shorter bursts. As it turned out, he bowled just 18 overs while Bumrah ended up bowling 33 overs. 'Anshul arrived here and bowled well in the nets. We were looking at the volume of overs. He can nip it around at off-stump. Unfortunately, there's no place to hide in international cricket,' Morkel said.
