Shiv Sena Demands Suspension Of Mumbai-Turkey Flights Amid Row

Mumbai: Shiv Sena Social Media In-charge, Rahool Kanal, in letters addressed to the Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has made a strong plea for the suspension of flights from Mumbai to Istanbul until Turkey clarifies its stand on terrorism and distances itself from supporting Pakistan. He expressed concern on Friday over Turkey's recent actions in supporting Pakistan against India's fight against terrorism. "Given the gravity of the situation, I strongly believe that India should revaluate its relationship with Turkey," he said. "Mumbai being a significant contributor to India's tourism industry (36 per cent of total tourism) has a substantial impact on international relations. Indians are among Turkey's biggest visitors and spenders. However, until Turkey publicly denounces its support for Pakistan in India's fight against terrorism, I urge the government to consider banning all flight services from Mumbai to Turkey," Mr Kanal added. He said the three flights from Mumbai to Istanbul by Turkish Airlines and one flight by Indigo on May 29 should be suspended. "Banning these flights would be befitting response to Turkey's actions, demonstrating India's commitment to national security and sovereignty," he added. The potential measures which were suggested were: Diplomatic Action, immediate suspend of diplomatic relations with Turkey; Economic sanctions by restricting trade and investment between the countries; Raising the issues on international forums to build global consensus against Turkey's actions and imposing a tourism ban. According to Mr Kanal, India accounts for 30 per cent of total tourists in turkey, with more than three lakh people visiting the country in 2024. Earlier on May 22, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India expects Turkey to strongly urge Pakistan to end its support to cross-border terrorism. "We expect Turkey to strongly urge Pakistan to end its support to cross-border terrorism and take credible and verifiable actions against the terror ecosystem it has harboured for decades. Relations are built on the basis of sensitivities to each other's concerns," Mr Jaiswal added. Following Turkey's alleged support for Pakistan, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security revoked the security clearance of a Turkish firm Celebi Airport Services India Pvt Ltd, citing national security concerns. Celebi has filed a plea in the Delhi High Court against the decision.

Gray Panthers summit forced out of Portland city building over campaign law violation

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An advocacy group's summit was kicked out of a Portland city building Friday after councilors learned it broke the law to have them there. The Gray Panthers originally said the summit would feature speakers including Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-Ore.), with topics touching on the current impact of the Trump administration. But additions to the speaker list were the problem. Portland mayor delivers State of the City address amid housing crisis, budget shortfall In January, Panthers coordinator Lew Church reached out to Councilman Sameer Kanal, asking him to sponsor the group in order to host a summit in the Portland Building. Kanal's team said he agreed, paying a little more than $1,000. But one day before the event, Kanal's team said they learned candidates running for elected office were asked to speak. According to a memo from the City Attorney's Office, Oregon law prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars and resources on a campaign event, so they pulled the plug. 'We dispute the rule,' Church told KOIN 6 News. 'I did go to law school, but I haven't practiced. So we're evaluating if we want to do legal action about the switch in the room.' Uncertainty looms in Oregon as tariffs on foreign auto parts set to kick in May 3 The mayor never showed up and his team says he was in another meeting at the same time. After catching up with Rep. Dexter when she found out the room was closed for the event, she told KOIN 6 News it was disappointing. 'If the mayor was coming down and we were going to have it in a different venue, that could be easily shown, I would absolutely do that,' Dexter said. 'But I think we're really gathering in the hallway and I feel like we need to have a real forum and make sure that people can be heard.' Those candidates who were invited to speak are running for seats on the Portland Public Schools board, including Virginia La Forte running for Zone 5. She told KOIN 6 News she was planning on speaking, but didn't know it violated any rules Both Kanal's team and the Gray Panthers said they tried contacting the other party multiple times in recent days and couldn't connect. Kunal Kamra delisted by 'BookMyShow'

Indian comedian receives death threats and police summons; free speech debate reignites in India Mumbai, India – Indian stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after online ticketing platform 'BookMyShow' reportedly removed all listings and content related to him. The decision follows growing political pressure spearheaded by Rahool N Kanal, General Secretary of Yuva Shiv Sena, a youth wing of the Shiv Sena political party. The move comes days after Kanal wrote to BookMyShow urging the platform to suspend ticket sales for Kamra's upcoming shows. In a letter dated April 02, and shared publicly on X (formerly Twitter), Kanal accused Kamra of running a 'campaign of vilification' against public figures, including India's Prime Minister and deputy chief ministers. He cited Kamra's satirical content as grounds for the request. BookMyShow has yet to release an official statement clarifying its position. However, users have noted that Kamra's artist profile and scheduled shows have been removed from the platform. Kamra responded via social media, posting: 'Hello @bookmyshow can you please confirm if I have your platform to list my shows? If not, it's fine. I understand.' Kamra also added, he had not received any formal communication from the platform regarding the status of his shows. The comedian's legal troubles began after he made veiled remarks during a performance in Mumbai about Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This led to the issuance of a third police summons under allegations of defamation and inciting public mischief. On Monday, Mumbai Police officers reportedly visited Kamra's residence, intensifying the legal pressure. Amidst the political and legal fallout, Kamra revealed that he had received approximately 500 death threats, prompting him to leave Mumbai and relocate temporarily to Tamil Nadu. He has since approached the Madras High Court and secured interim protection from arrest in connection with the FIR filed against him. Kamra's supporters have condemned BookMyShow's alleged capitulation to political pressure, describing the move as a worrying sign for artistic freedom and freedom of expression in India. Critics argue that satire, particularly political satire, is a legitimate form of commentary in any democracy and should not be curtailed under external pressure. The situation continues to evolve, with no comment yet from BookMyShow and growing scrutiny from the public and media alike.

A North Portland native, Councilor Kanal received his B.A. in political science and economics from the University of Washington, as well as a Master's in global affairs from NYU. Before being elected to the council, Kanal was project manager of the city's Police Accountability Commission. Kanal joined this week's Eye on Northwest Politics to dive deeper into how councilors are looking to cut the $93 million from the budget. He also shared his thoughts about potential cuts to the police bureau, as well as an anticipated expansion of Portland Street Response. Watch the full interview in the video above.
