MSC Irina docking is milestone not just for Vizhinjam but for India's emergence as key player in global transshipment: Karan Adani

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 9 (ANI): The docking of world's largest container ship, MSC Irina, at Vizhinjam International Seaport is a milestone not just for Vizhinjam but for India's emergence as a key player in global transhipment, Managing Director of Adani Ports and SEZ, Karan Adani, said on Monday. 'Proud to welcome MSC Irina, the world's largest container ship with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, to our Vizhinjam Port. This marks the vessel's maiden visit to South Asian shores, making it a milestone not just for Vizhinjam but for India's emergence as a key player in global transshipment. A bold vision now in motion,' Karan Adani said in a post on X. The MSC IRINA, recognised as the world's largest container ship by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, docked at the Vizhinjam International Seaport on Monday morning and will be berthed till Tuesday. According to an Adani Group press release, this monumental arrival marks a significant milestone for the seaport, which was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping. With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field. Designed specifically to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency. This vessel makes its maiden visit to a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade. The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year. It is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking. Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency. Karan Adani Welcomes MSC IRINA, World's Largest Container Ship At Vizhinjam

The MSC IRINA, the world's largest container ship by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity, made an entry into India on Monday and docked at the Adani Group's Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala. The ship, with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, will remain berthed at the port until Tuesday, June 10. Celebrating the arrival of the vessel, Karan Adani, the managing director of Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd (APSEZ), wrote on X, "Proud to welcome MSC Irina, the world's largest container ship with a capacity of 24,346 TEUs, to our Vizhinjam Port. This is the first time a vessel of such scale has docked at an Indian port, signalling Vizhinjam's readiness to handle mega container traffic and underlining its strategic potential in global shipping routes. The ship's docking came a month after the port was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. Developed under a public-private partnership between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and the Government of Kerala, the Rs 8,900-crore facility received its commercial clearance in December 2024 following a successful trial run. The inauguration ceremony in May was also attended by Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor. Prime Minister Modi then highlighted the port's strategic importance, saying, "It is designed to accommodate large cargo ships, addressing a critical need. Until now, 75% of India's transhipment activities were conducted at foreign ports, resulting in significant revenue losses for the country." The Vizhinjam International Transshipment Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport is built to handle large-scale container transhipment, as well as multi-purpose and break-bulk cargo, making it one of the most advanced maritime infrastructure projects in the region. The natural depth of the waters off Vizhinjam Port - ranging between 18 to 20 metres even up to a kilometre from the shore - makes it suitable for very large vessels, including massive tankers and mother ships. In May, the port welcomed Turkiye, the world's largest eco-friendly container ship operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, cementing Vizhinjam's position as a key deepwater hub on India's coastline.

Tajpur deep sea port: Adani deal ‘over', state to float fresh tender

1 2 3 Kolkata: The Bengal cabinet on Monday decided to issue a fresh tender for the Tajpur deep sea port, ending its four-year association with Adani Group for the project. The state govt had announced in Nov 2023 that it would open a fresh tender for the Rs 25,000-crore project but did not formally announce its decision to scrap the first tender process completely. Days later, the state govt clarified that Adani Group was still involved in the project. It was then stated that requisite permission for the port was sought from the Union ministries of defence, shipping, external affairs and home affairs. Only the ministry of home affairs had given a conditional security clearance and made certain observations. But with things not progressing, the Bengal govt indicated that it would take a legal view. This Feb, when CM Mamata Banerjee was asked if the tender to Adani Ports had been cancelled, she said, "Tajpur port will be coming up. The tendering process will be looked at by the state finance department. We are taking legal opinion on the tendering process." On Monday, the Bengal cabinet finally gave its nod to a fresh tendering process. A senior official said, "Following the decision to issue a fresh tender for Tajpur port means the earlier agreement is null and void." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like O novo dispositivo que os idosos usam para ajudar na neuropatia (dor nos nervos) A arte do herbalismo Undo The Bengal cabinet had approved a proposal by the Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ) to set up a deep sea port at Tajpur in Sept 2021. Initially, there were two bidders for the first deep sea project in the state — Adani Ports and JSW Infrastructure. The final day for bidding was March 14, 2021. In 2022, Karan Adani, director of APSEZ, was handed over the letter of intent for the port. The port, apart from providing direct employment for 25,000 people, would create indirect opportunities for many more. Located around 170 km from Kolkata, it would be 5 km off NH-116 and have a draft of over 12m. Its location would make it easily accessible from north Bengal and even the upcoming Dankuni freight corridor. According to the first tender, the successful bidder would be given 125 acres of seafront to develop the port and another 1,000 acres 4 km away for port-linked industrial development. There would be no need for any additional land acquisition, said sources.

Proud to support conservation efforts of Olive Ridley turtles, says Karan Adani

New Delhi, May 23 (IANS) Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) Managing Director Karan Adani on Friday said that they were proud to support conservation efforts of Olive Ridley as the population of the vulnerable sea turtle species thrives in Odisha. The Olive Ridley turtle derives its name from its olive-coloured carapace -- the hard upper shell. The sea turtle is one of seven living marine turtle species classified as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Their distinct breeding patterns and growing threat from human activity make the species increasingly fragile. "We are delighted that the Olive Ridley turtles are thriving in record numbers at Gahirmatha beach near Dhamra," said Karan Adani, in a post on social media platform X, on the occasion of World Turtle Day. "We are proud to support conservation efforts that protect them and their fragile ecosystems in Odisha," he added. Adani Group's Dhamra port in Odisha is home to one of the world's largest nesting populations of Olive Ridley turtles. The Group has created a corpus of Rs 30 crore for the conservation and protection of the Olive Ridley turtles. In a video posted on X, Karan Adani listed some measures undertaken by Adani Ports for the conservation of the Olive Ridley turtles. This includes dark sky lighting -- special lights installed to reduce sea glare and aid turtle movement; turtle migration support – providing trawlers to the Forest Department for patrolling during migration periods to ensure safety; safe navigation -- port routes planned away from turtle congregation zones. Other measures include fishing zone marking -- buoys are placed to restrict fishing boats from entering turtle-sensitive areas; and community engagement -- partnering with Divisional Forest Officer Bhadrak to educate fishers on mangrove and turtle conservation. In the 2024-25 season, about 6.89 lakh Olive Ridley turtles nested at Gahirmatha beach, the company said. Karan Adani noted that APSEZ will continue to work on their conservation efforts for the marine species. "Working with local communities and wildlife authorities, we continue to safeguard these gentle marine creatures," the Managing Director of APSEZ said. --IANS rvt/vd
