CM opens chemotherapy centres in 16 districts

Mysuru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah reaffirmed the govt's commitment to quality public healthcare by highlighting the presence of highly skilled and experienced doctors in govt hospitals. Speaking after launching the state-of-the-art chemotherapy centres in 16 districts, including Mysuru, he said one of the cancer patients who came for chemotherapy noted that the Rs 2,000 given to the head of the family is helping them get chemo treatment. Siddaramaiah emphasised that advanced and accessible cancer treatment is now a reality in Karnataka. The new centre in Mysuru, opened at Metagalli District Hospital, is equipped with 20 beds (10 each for men and women) and is part of a broader initiative to establish chemotherapy units in 16 district hospitals across the state. Each of the remaining centres will have a 10-bed capacity. "Annually, over 70,000 people in Karnataka are diagnosed with cancer. Until now, they had no choice but to travel to Bengaluru for treatment. With the new district-level centres, we aim to provide care closer to home," said Siddaramaiah. Health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao highlighted the financial struggles many cancer patients face, stressing the importance of decentralising services. He also announced plans for a future branch of Kidwai Hospital in Mysuru. National Health Mission director Naveen Bhat called the initiative a "milestone in decentralised cancer care", and confirmed a partnership with Kidwai Hospital to strengthen the quality of treatment. Mysuru district H C Mahadevappa, MLCs D Thimmaiah, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, Karnataka Exhibition Authority chairman Ayub Khan, DC G Lakshmikanth Reddy, Zilla Panchayat CEO S Ukesh Kumar, and city police commissioner Seema Latkar were present. 40-day ‘Fun Fair Exhibition' at Dasara grounds to begin on Friday

In a move to transform the Dasara Exhibition Grounds in Mysuru into a vibrant, year-round venue, the Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) will be launching a 40-day-long 'Fun Fair Exhibition' on Friday, and it will conclude on June 17. KEA chairman Ayub Khan announced on Thursday that the exhibition will be open to the public daily from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Entry is priced at ₹50 for adults and ₹30 for children aged above five. A key attraction of the fair is a replica of the iconic Niagara Falls, along with amusement games, commercial stalls, food courts, and special lighting displays. Traditionally active only during the annual Dasara festivities, the exhibition grounds are now being positioned as a multi-purpose venue for hosting exhibitions, cultural events, shows, weddings, and other activities throughout the year. The fun fair is part of the KEA's broader vision to make the space more dynamic and accessible throughout the year. The KEA had urged the Deputy Commissioner to consider centralising all city expos at the Dasara grounds, citing the site's infrastructure, ample parking, and basic amenities as key advantages. The authority proposed making it mandatory for expos to be held at the exhibition grounds rather than at various scattered venues in the city. In a further boost to Mysuru's development, the KEA is also working to bring a Unity Mall to the city. The Central government has allocated ₹193 crore to the State for establishing such malls aimed at promoting local products and crafts.

Protest against Wakf (Amendment) Act in Mysuru on Saturday

A protest against the Wakf (Amendment) Act, 2025, will be held at Eidgah Maidan at Tilak Nagar in Mysuru on Saturday. Karnataka Exhibition Authority (KEA) chairperson Ayub Khan, who held a press conference in this connection along with Muslim religious leaders of Mysuru on Friday, said a peaceful protest had been organised to oppose the major changes brought to the Wakf Act of 2013 by the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The call for the protest against the Wakf (Amendment) Act, 2025, had been given by religious leaders, who had gathered under the banner of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). 'This law is unconstitutional and goes against religious freedom and secular principles. It is politically motivated and reflects prejudice against Muslims. The law imposes undue restrictions on the Muslim community and may lead to negative consequences and conflict with regard to wakf-related issues in future,' said the statement issued on behalf of the organisers. A peaceful protest demonstration will be held between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday under the guidance of Sarkhazi of Mysuru Maulana Usman Sharief and leadership of Mufti Syed Tajuddin. The protest has been supported by various progressive organisations, Dalit organisations, and farmers' organisations. Chairman of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Forum K.S. Shivaram, Mufti Syed Tajuddin, Maulana Mohammed Zakaulla, and Maulana Ayub Ansari were also present at the press conference. Meanwhile, former Minister and Congress MLA representing Narasimharaja Assembly constituency Tanveer Sait and SDPI leader Abdul Majeed visited the Eidgah Maidan two days ago to take stock of the preparations for the demonstration.
