Could Have Bought Rolls-Royce If I Had Removed More Kidneys: DMK MLA's Remark Triggers Backlash

Last Updated: DMK MLA Kathiravan's comments on kidney surgeries at his Trichy hospital sparked outrage. BJP's Annamalai and AIADMK's Palanisamy condemned it, alleging a kidney-stealing racket. A statement by DMK MLA Kathiravan has sparked an outrage, with political leaders in Tamil Nadu suggesting a kidney-stealing racket is functional at his Trichy hospital. BJP leader Annamalai and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palanisamy strongly condemned remarks of DMK MLA from Manachanallur regarding kidney operation of people at his family-run hospital. Criticising the Manachanallur MLA, Annamalai shared a video on X showing Kathiravan discussing the profits made by kidney operations in his hospital and comparing it with the price of a Rolls-Royce car. In the video, Kathiravan said, 'After covering the medical expenses and doctor fees, I will have only 2 to 3 lakhs left (after each kidney operation). Do you know the price of my father's Rolls-Royce car? It is Rs 14.5 crore. The total kidney operations carried out by us is only 252, with the profit of Rs 2 lakh per kidney operation, when can I buy a Rolls-Royce car? I could have bought it only if I had removed all the kidneys from people in Thirupattur. My only concern is that no one realised I saved the lives of 252 people. The BJP leader accused the MLA's hospital of stealing kidney of poor weavers from Namakkal. He said that the DMK-led state government did not take any concrete action against the middleman. 'This is not a joke. Poor weavers from Namakkal were lured, their kidneys stolen, and the MLA himself admits in this video that his hospital made at least Rs 7.5 crore from this trade. Yet, the DMK Govt has taken no concrete action. Has their functionary Dravida Anandan, the middleman in this kidney theft racket, even been arrested?(sic)," he added. While former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy suggested people to avoid visiting clinics run by DMK members, saying they 'may lose your kidney". 'Don't even visit clinics run by DMK men even by mistake. You may lose your kidney. A group is prevailing which shows money to poor and is stealing organs. DMK government itself constituted a committee which investigated and discovered kidney stealing in a hospital belonging to DMK MLA. Was there action taken? NO," he said. He added that only the license for organ transplant in the hospital was cancelled, with no arrests made. 'The MLA says that for buying a Rolls Royce car, he might have to remove people's kidneys. His car is worth Rs 12 crore. He has admitted how many kidneys he needs to steal to buy the car, which is evident from the speech," Edappadi claimed. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Saved 252 People: DMK Leader Appears To Defend Kidney Transplant Racket

Chennai: A controversial video has emerged of DMK MLA P Kathiravan, whose family-run hospital recently lost its kidney transplant licence over an alleged illegal organ trade racket. In the video, which NDTV could not independently verify, the legislator purportedly presents himself as a life-saver rather than a wrongdoer. "I've saved the lives of 252 people. None talks about this," Mr Kathiravan is heard saying while addressing people at his constituency. Detailing the procedures, he claims that each kidney transplant involved four specialist doctors - three surgeons, one urologist and an anaesthetist - along with 15 to 20 supporting staff, and that three separate permissions were required before surgery. "We charge Rs 10 to Rs 12 lakh per surgery. After paying for medicines and doctors, I get only Rs 2-3 lakh. Total surgeries done - 252. This is not worth a rupee. Since we have a medical college, we do this only as a service. There are a thousand ways to earn. Why kidney? How many can we take away?" he apparently says in the clip. Mr Kathiravan even refered to his father's luxury car. "My father's Rolls Royce is worth Rs 14.5 crore. I would have to take away all the kidneys here to buy that," he said, insisting that the hospital is now run by his daughter and son-in-law. Modus Operandi Earlier this month, the Tamil Nadu government suspended the kidney transplant licences of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College Hospital in Perambalur - run by Kathiravan's family - and Cethar Hospitals in Trichy. A state health department probe found that the "family donor" provision under the Transplantation of Human Organs Act was allegedly misused, with poor weavers from Namakkal district being lured by brokers with large sums of money to sell their kidneys. These donors would then pose as relatives of recipients to pass legal scrutiny. One such alleged middleman, identified as Anandan, remains on the run, no arrest has been made yet. "Boasting Without Shame" Says BJP Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai slammed the MLA's comments, accusing him of "boasting without shame" and "admitting to a business worth crores". "Kathiravan says he made ₹2 to ₹3 lakh per surgery, which amounts to at least ₹7.5 crore from this trade. He even compares kidney profits to his father's ₹14.5 crore Rolls Royce. This isn't a joke - poor weavers were exploited, and the DMK government has taken no serious action. The middleman is still at large," Annamalai said. The video has come as an embarassment to the ruling DMK and the party has so far refrained from commenting on the controversy. Kathiravan was not reachable for a response.

DMK MLA S Kathiravan defends his father's hospital, asks why he needs to profit from transplants

TIRUCHY: After the state government decided to permanently cancel the kidney transplant licence of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital for its alleged involvement in a kidney trafficking racket, Manachanallur DMK MLA S Kathiravan, whose father owns the hospital, became emotional and asked why would he need profit from kidneys. 'We are only doing this as a service. I have a thousand ways to earn money,' he said. Kathiravan was addressing the party cadre and residents during his Makaludan Kathiravan campaign on Monday. 'I'll tell you the truth – no media has spoken about this. I have saved the lives of 252 people,' he said while responding to a man from the crowd who posed the question to the DMK MLA. The MLA detailed that each surgery required four doctors – three surgeons and one urologist – along with an anaesthesiologist and around 20 supporting staff. He asked whether anyone could carry out such complex procedures without following the law and pointed out that permission must be secured from three separate authorities. Lamenting that his life-saving efforts are being dubbed as scandal, the MLA said each operation costs Rs 10 lakh-Rs 12 lakh, largely for medicines, while the hospital would receive only Rs 2 lakh-Rs 3 lakh. The investigation into the scam found forged documents, inducements to donors, and other violations of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994. A source close to the MLA added despite the health department under the DMK government taking action, they are exploring all possible legal options. Hospital gets only Rs 2L - Rs 3L for each op 'We are only doing this as a service. I have a thousand ways to earn money,' Kathiravan said. Lamenting that his life-saving efforts are being dubbed as scandal, the MLA said each operation costs Rs 10 lakh - Rs 12 lakh, largely for medicines, while the hospital would receive only Rs 2 lakh - Rs 3 lakh.

DMK MLA launches outreach drive in Trichy

1 2 Trichy: Ahead of the 2026 assembly election, Manachanallur DMK MLA S Kathiravan launched 'Makkaludan Manachanallur' (Manachanallur with people), a grievance redressal drive to receive petitions from all villages in his constituency. The MLA said that he would visit one panchayat a day, and people from hamlets within the panchayat will be mobilized in open areas to share their grievances. The drive takes place from 5pm to 9pm following which biriyani is served to the villagers. "Since July 14, I have covered five panchayats. Some panchayats will have two hamlets while some up to seven, and all hamlets will be focussed," Kathiravan told TOI. My team would then follow up with the petitions on behalf of villagers to revenue and DRDA departments, he added. Most of the petitions received were for availing 1,000 financial assistance provided for women, and for free house pattas. Party sources recalled that one of the reasons for the early outreach programme is due to tough times faced by the MLA during the 2021 assembly election campaign. While the MLA hails from a non-dominant caste (reddiyar) in the constituency, a few villages with mutharaiyars as the majority caste had stopped Kathiravan from campaigning in the 2021 assembly election. Since Manachanallur became an assembly segment after delimitations in 2008, Kathiravan was the first DMK candidate to be elected. "Villagers have accepted me now, the reception is good even in areas where AIADMK was strong in the past," the MLA said. Kathiravan, son of educationalist A Srinivasan, founder of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Group, added that he fulfilled the promise of providing medical care to around 60,000 people from his constituency at his hospitals in Samayapuram, Trichy and Perambalur.
