Congress questions need for BJP to "poach" their members

Nagpur: As the BJP continues to induct taluka-level Congress leaders ahead of the crucial local body polls in Nagpur district, the Congress has raised questions about the urgency behind this 'recruitment drive'. Recently, BJP state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule claimed that several Congress members from Saoner and other talukas were joining the BJP, adding that many more were in the queue. Saoner, long considered a stronghold of Congress leader Sunil Kedar, was wrested by the BJP in the 2024 Assembly elections with Ashish Deshmukh's victory. Now, the BJP is aiming to take control of the Zilla Parishad (ZP), currently dominated by Kedar loyalists. Party insiders believe that dismantling Kedar's influence in rural Nagpur could help the saffron party consolidate its position as the district's dominant political force. Many political analysts argue that in the rural local body elections, the BJP is effectively contesting against Kedar rather than the Congress as a whole. During the Lok Sabha elections, Kedar-backed candidate Shyam Barve managed to secure a win despite an aggressive campaign by the Mahayuti alliance. Kunda Raut, former vice president of Nagpur ZP, took a jab at the BJP on social media, saying, "If the BJP is truly in a strong position, why would they need to steal Congress members?" "Those joining the BJP know they are likely to lose the polls, so they want to be associated with the party in power at the state level. But people have seen through their hunger for power and shifting loyalties. BJP's poaching tactics won't work in local polls, where voters prioritize the individual over the party," another Congress leader said.

BJP will win all local body polls in Nagpur rural: Ashish Deshmukh

1 2 Nagpur: BJP is ready to breach the Congress bastion of Nagpur rural politics with a strategy to focus on village level voters. This micromanagement is what the party hopes will turn the tide in its favour in a big way. Saoner MLA Ashish Deshmukh, who emerged as a 'giant killer' by ending the Sunil Kedar reign in that constituency, is now sharpening his claws for another round of battle for local body polls. Speaking to TOI, Deshmukh said, "Voters are aware that BJP is the only party which will bring in development. Kedar's conviction in the bank scam has exposed everything. The assembly poll results (in which Kedar's wife was the candidate) showed the new reality. Also, voters would want the ruling party in the state to have control over local body polls too."Saffron party members have already started meeting village level voters, and laying the ground for a battle which is still a few months away. Deshmukh said, "Nobody can deny that winds of change have started. You go to any village and development work is going on in full speed. Kedar never did development work, as he felt that development does not bring votes." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Mother's Day wishes , messages , and quotes !

Woman says colleagues shared offensive texts, HR & senior didn't help

Noida: A woman working for an electronics manufacturer in Sector 90 filed a police complaint, alleging that two of her colleagues shared offensive messages about her on a WhatsApp group and two others, including a senior and an HR employee, pressured her to resolve the matter. The woman said that the company, instead of helping her, fired her from the job. Police said three of the four men named in the FIR have been arrested. They allegedly wrote that she would be "available" for Rs 500 - Rs 1,000. She said that she alerted a senior, Dilbagh, about the messages, but he tried to dismiss the matter and said the colleagues were just talking. The woman alleged that Dilbagh also insulted her. Subsequently, the woman said she approached Yogesh, a member of the company's HR team, to complain against her colleagues. But Yogesh, too, told her not to file a complaint and to forgive Kedar and Mohit instead. He also told her not to inform anyone at home about the incidents. Police said the woman came to Sector 142 station on April 29 and filed a complaint. "The woman sought action against the company employees when her complaint wasn't heard at the office level. We have arrested three people, including Kedar and Dilbagh, in connection with the case," a senior officer said. The accused have been charged under sections 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the IT Act, and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS.
