There was agony and ecstasy for Irish players and staff involved on either side, with former Republic of Ireland U21 captain Conor Coventry at the heart of a Charlton side that has ex international Curtis Fleming on the club's coaching staff. Leyton Orient goalkeeper Josh Keeley, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and called up for Ireland's friendlies with Senegal and Luxembourg next month, was unable to keep Charlton out while, in attack, Ollie O'Neill could not repeat his semi-final impact. And no-nonsense defending from both sides led to a scrappy opening period with goal opportunities at a premium. Republic of Ireland call-up Josh Keeley's growth 'brilliant to see'
Last week's Republic of Ireland senior men's squad announcement had a distinct League of Ireland flavour to it. While Shamrock Rovers defender Josh Honohan is the sole representative of the domestic game in the party named for the June friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg, two of the three other new faces are alumni of the league. St Mirren midfielder Killian Phillips started out at Drogheda United before joining his current parent club Crystal Palace three years ago, while fellow Ireland Under-21 cap, goalkeeper Josh Keeley, began at St Patrick's Athletic before he was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur. The Dunboyne, Co Meath native is currently on loan at Leyton Orient and celebrated his international call-up with some penalty shootout heroics in the London club's League One play-off semi-final victory over Stockport which has paved their way into a final against Charlton Athletic. With Gavin Bazunu injured and Mark Travers among the Championship contingent rested, Keeley now has an opportunity to gain experience as an understudy to Caoimhin Kelleher during the June window. And for former St Patrick's Athletic and Shamrock Rovers keeper Barry Murphy, Keeley's rise has been impressive to watch having worked with the 22-year-old briefly at Richmond Park in 2021. "It's been phenomenal. When I went in at Pat's, he was a young lad coming through and I think he thought he was going to be number two that season to Vitezslav Jaros (who was on loan from) Liverpool - and what a player to learn off as well," Murphy told this week's RTÉ Soccer Podcast. "And I came in as the senior goalkeeper and I kind of pulled him aside and said to him, 'Listen, I'm not here to take your place, I'm here for a specific reason as a second goalkeeper, as an experienced one to guide' - Vite was only a young goalkeeper as well - (and for me it was) to kind of be there to bounce ideas off and if needs be I'll come in and do things. "And he took that on board and he just trained so well that season and he's kind of grown into his stature as well. He's a big lad, six-two, six-three but he's added real bulk to his presence as well, and he's been so good since he went to Leyton Orient. "He's a real presence and a real stalwart for that team, first name on the team sheet and again, he's topped that off with a penalty save and a trip to Wembley and an international call-up all within a couple of days of each other, and it's brilliant to see. "Because it's something we do have, which is a wealth of goalkeepers, but you've got to get your chance really and that's what Spurs gave him. "Pat Jennings got him over to Spurs on a trial basis. He obviously has the links there and they liked what they saw and saw the talent that is there and it's starting to come to fruition now." Murphy also gave his take on which LOI players could give themselves a chance of an international call-up in the medium term in the wake of Honohan's elevation. But it's Honohan's inclusion for June that former Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell was particularly delighted with and he hopes his former Hoops team-mate is given a chance to get some game-time. "It would be great to actually see him playing as well," said Towell. "Obviously I spoke about it in March when he got called up to the provisional squad and you don't want it to be that token gesture of 'oh, we're doing it for the league'. "Josh is a really, really good player and he can play at a really high level. I know Stephen Bradley probably won't thank me for this but I think he probably will be the next one to go and when he does go I think everybody will take a step back and realise how good he is. "Obviously playing in this league he's done tremendously well but sometimes you don't really get the credit where it's due. "When you're playing in the League of Ireland, it's only when you take the next step like when Liam Scales was playing in the League of Ireland. Everybody knew how good of a player he was but it was only when he went to Celtic then that people realised, 'wow, this boy can really play'. "So I think something similar is going to happen with Josh, so for the games coming up now, I would love if he was minimum able to get onto the pitch and show what he can do. "But it would be great to see him start a game because he's in full flow now."
