Trade Idea Moves Patriots' Kendrick Bourne to 49ers

Trade Idea Moves Patriots' Kendrick Bourne to 49ers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Things appeared to be going upward for New England Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne after the 2021 season. Advertisement Bourne had just finished his first season with the Patriots after signing a three-year, $15 million contract with the team during the previous offseason. He recorded career highs in receptions (55) and receiving yards (800), and he appeared to be on the fast track to increased playing time. Since then, a lack of production and a severe injury – a torn ACL midway through the 2023 campaign – have derailed his trajectory, as he has yet to surpass 450 receiving yards in a single season since. This also makes a fresh start with a new team appealing, and Pro Football Network's Brandon Austin believes that such a move could be in the cards for Bourne. According to Austin, the San Francisco 49ers are the franchise that could benefit the most from having another wideout added to their rotation. The move would also serve as a reunion for Bourne, as he played for the 49ers from 2017 to 2020. New England Patriots wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (84) against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm J. Rebilas-Imagn Images "San Francisco moved on from Pro Bowl wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. this offseason, sending him to the Commanders. Meanwhile, Brandon Aiyuk suffered a significant knee injury last season, and his recovery timeline could force the 49ers to hit the trade market for a veteran receiver," Austin wrote. "With Samuel gone and Aiyuk coming off an injury, the 49ers will be relying on Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall to step up in 2025. Bourne is a veteran who Kyle Shanahan knows and could be an insurance policy at receiver." Advertisement Uncertainty surrounding Bourne's role with the Patriots this fall makes the deal even more of a possibility. "With Bourne turning 30 in August and the Patriots already bringing in Diggs and Mack Hollins as veteran presences, his role in New England looks shaky," Austin wrote. "Given his limited role and the lack of clarity around his fit within New England's rebuild, it wouldn't be shocking to see him moved." Since signing with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Washington University, Bourne has played in 111 NFL games and accumulated 292 receptions, 3,714 receiving yards, and 22 receiving touchdowns. 4 things to watch in Patriots' third open practice

Organized team activities should be taken with a grain of salt. It's an exciting time in the offseason when we get a brief look at the Patriots. Historically, the media views between 3-5 open practices during May and June. Sometimes, the players who stand out make a name for themselves. Advertisement For example, in 2021, Kendrick Bourne led all Patriots receivers in receptions during OTAs and minicamp. That led to a strong training camp followed by a career year where he finished with 800 receiving yards and five touchdowns. The next offseason, however, the leading receiver during these spring practices was Nelson Agholor. In 2023, it was tight end Mike Gesicki. The Patriots will wrap up their last week of OTAs this week. The media will be present at Monday's practice. Next week, the team wraps up their spring practice schedule with a three-day mandatory minicamp. All practices are open to the media. The only difference between OTAs and minicamp is that OTAs are optional while minicamp is mandatory for players. Advertisement Here are five things to watch in today's final open OTA practice of 2025: Drake Maye We shouldn't overreact to a couple of bad practices in the spring. However, it would be nice to see Drake Maye look like the star we all think he can be. So far, the performance has left a lot to be desired. Through two practices, Maye has completed 61% of his passes (20-of-33) with four interceptions. This marks his first offseason with Josh McDaniels. Last year, he completed 66% (29-of-44) of his attempts with three interceptions – while also learning a new system. Maye needs to show improvement – and to dominate. The future of the Patriots franchise hinges on his development, so although it's not the time to sound the alarm, it would be nice to see him finish strong this spring. Wide receivers When it comes to Maye's development, it would be nice to see his receivers step up. Advertisement Over two practices, his leading receivers in team drills are Hunter Henry (five catches) and Kendrick Bourne (four catches). After that, the numbers fall off – DeMario Douglas (two), Kyle Williams (two), Javon Baker (one), and Austin Hooper (one). It's noteworthy that Williams is already on the field with Maye while Baker has spent more time with Joshua Dobbs and Ben Wooldridge. One name to keep an eye on is Efton Chism III. The undrafted free agent has a team-high six catches in two practices. All those are from Dobbs and Wooldridge, but he's making the most of his opportunities. Left guard Who will start at left guard for the Patriots? Advertisement At this point, that's anyone's guess. Through two practices, the Patriots have rotated several players in at left guard. There doesn't seem to be a clear favorite right now. The leading favorites are Cole Strange, Tyrese Robinson, and Wes Schweitzer. Layden Robinson could also factor into the equation along with undrafted free agent Jack Conley. Right now, it's hard to evaluate since there is no contact allowed, but this is one of the bigger question marks on the Patriots roster. Josh McDaniels Speaking of Maye, it'll be interesting to hear what Josh McDaniels has to say about the young quarterback. On Monday, all Patriots assistant coaches are expected to speak with the media before the start of practice. Advertisement McDaniels hasn't spoken with the media since the start of OTAs. It'll be fascinating to hear what he says about Maye and his recent struggles. In one practice, Maye threw four interceptions. In the next, he completed 53% of his attempts. 7 Patriots players jobs could be in jeopardy after 2025 NFL draft

7 Patriots players jobs could be in jeopardy after 2025 NFL draft The sudden influx of talent from the 2025 NFL draft and the group of undrafted rookie free agents has already led to multiple players being released from the New England Patriots' roster. And they won't be the last. It's the natural order of things for a rebuilding team. The Patriots are attempting to raise the talent level of the entire roster, and that has led to key contributors being shown the door. They had a massive draft class after selecting 11 players on the board, and they're also bringing in a slew of rookie free agents for what might end up being one of the most intense training camp competitions we've seen in years. No spot is guaranteed on the roster with Patriots coach Mike Vrabel entering the fold. He has already cut or moved on from franchise greats, including David Andrews, Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise Jr., Ja'Whaun Bentley and Joe Cardona. Here are seven players who could be in jeopardy after the draft: RB Antonio Gibson It's getting crowded in the Patriots' running back room. They currently have a solid three-headed monster with Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson and rookie second-round draft pick TreVeyon Henderson. I'm not so sure Henderson being on the roster will impact Stevenson as much as it'll impact Gibson. Stevenson can still serve as a workhorse power back, and Henderson, who would bring more of an explosive element to the offense, could share the workload. Henderson also has tremendous upside as a receiver, and he's one of the best pass-protecting backs to ever come out of college. That doesn't bode well for Gibson's snap count. WR Javon Baker As a fourth-round draft pick, Javon Baker likely won't be afforded as many opportunities as 2024 second-round pick Ja'Lynn Polk. The competition is fierce with the team signing four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs in free agency and spending a 2025 third-round draft pick on Washington State wide receiver Kyle Williams. Baker will also have to compete with a healthy Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte, who was one of the team's best receivers last season. He needs to give Vrabel a reason to keep him on the roster. WR Kendrick Bourne Kendrick Bourne's name always seems to pop up in potential trade scenarios, but he has managed to stick on the Patriots' roster up to this point. His snap count will surely take a hit with the arrival of Diggs and Williams. There are still questions on how much he has left in the tank after his ACL injury back in 2023. With that said, Bourne had his career-best season under Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator in 2021, and he's heading into his second year removed from the knee injury. He could still carve out a role for himself in the Patriots' offense. TE Jaheim Bell CJ Dippre is a name to keep an eye on in training camp. The undrafted rookie free agent tight end out of Alabama is tough and gritty in the trenches, with the ability to block and make plays as a receiver. He isn't a high-end prospect, but he's talented enough to beat out Jaheim Bell as the No. 3 option behind Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper. Bell, who also has plenty of promise as a player, is only in his second season, but he might have some competition in training camp courtesy of Dippre. C Garrett Bradbury Garrett Bradbury already has competition before he takes his first snap in New England. Along with signing the former Minnesota Viking as a free agent, the Patriots also spent a third-round draft pick on promising Georgia center Jared Wilson. The expectations were for Bradbury to start in New England, but that might not be the case if Wilson beats him out in training camp. OT Vederian Lowe It's obvious Vederian Lowe is on borrowed time as a starting left tackle in New England. He is expected to revert back to the role of a backup with the Patriots using the No. 4 overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft on LSU's Will Campbell. At only 26 years old, there's still time for Lowe to improve with a more experienced Patriots coaching staff. S Jaylinn Hawkins The Patriots using a fourth-round draft pick on California safety Craig Woodson was one of the more surprising moves in the draft. They aren't hurting for help at safety with Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers starting for the unit. They also have a solid depth chart at the position with Dell Pettus, Jaylinn Hawkins and Marte Mapu. Hawkins feels like the odd man out after the Woodson draft pick. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

Kendrick Bourne's three-word reaction to Patriots signing Stefon Diggs

Kendrick Bourne's three-word reaction to Patriots signing Stefon Diggs Veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne was excited by the New England Patriots' signing of four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs on Tuesday. He reacted to the news on social media with three words. "This dumbbbb littttt!!!," Bourne posted in an Instagram story. Bourne is one of the veteran faces on the Patriots' roster, and he is clearly looking forward to teaming up with Diggs in New England. The Patriots have struggled to find consistent production at the wide receiver position, and Diggs has proven himself over the years to be one of the NFL's best at creating separation. It's a significant upgrade for the Patriots that could make life easier for the other receivers, including Bourne. All eyes will be on the Patriots' offense to see how everything fits next season. At the very least, the team added another proven playmaker to catch passes from second-year quarterback Drake Maye. There are no certainties on what the end result will be, but it's clear the Patriots will look completely different from the team we saw in 2024.
