‘Really positive' update in Kerr recovery
Interim Matildas coach Tom Sermanni says superstar captain Sam Kerr is making 'really positive' steps towards her long-awaited return from an ACL injury. Kerr ruptured her ACL at training in January 2024 and has missed all matches for Chelsea and her country since. The 31-year-old has been sidelined for 16 months – four more than the typical ACL recovery — and there has been growing concern she might not play until 2026. But Sermanni said the Matildas medical staff was 'heavily involved' in Kerr's rehab process at Chelsea and all were confident of a looming return. 'It's actually going really well, we've got a full-time physio in London, it's where all the high-maintenance players are,' he said in Melbourne on Thursday, ahead of Friday's friendly against Argentina. 'We're heavily involved with Chelsea and Sam's rehab and the knee is looking really good. 'From their feedback, I am confident that she's getting much, much closer than she has been over the past few months. 'The news there I am getting back is really positive.' The Aussies host the Argentinians in the first of two friendlies at Marvel Stadium on Friday night. Sermanni expects a competitive touring outfit but will likely use the friendly as a chance to get a glimpse of some future stars as the Matildas continue to build towards the 2026 Asian Cup on home soil. 'Hopefully there will be some players in there that haven't had some game time, perhaps even any game time,' he said. 'It's always a balance, it'll be great if we can give more opportunities to more inexperienced players or fringe players, it's trying to work out the right balance. 'These will be two tough games, Argentina will probably be not too dissimilar to Brazil, they've got a love of women's football. 'They'd be down the rank a little bit but Argentinians in football will always be competitive.' While Kerr and fellow star Mary Fowler are both unavailable due to injury, the Matildas will feature Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross fresh off their Champions League triumph with Arsenal last weekend The second match against Argentina is on Monday, June 2 at GIO Stadium in Canberra.

Fife thugs jailed for Rewind festival attack on university lecturer
A pair of thugs who left a university lecturer blinded in one eye in an attack at the Rewind music festival in Perthshire have been jailed for a total of 10 years. The man also needed a metal plate inserted in his jaw following the assault at Scone Palace by Patrick Kerr, 33, and 38-year-old Simon Tierney. The 53 year-old victim had been there with his family on July 22 2023. He did not know the pair but had 'polite' conversations with them at one stage. He then walked away from 'aggressive' Tierney but was set upon after refusing the offer of a chip from the lout. The duo were sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow after separately admitting assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement and impairment. Tierney – who ran a gas fitting company – had pled guilty at a hearing last summer. Sentencing had been delayed on him until the end of Kerr's trial in Dundee last month but he ended up admitting to the same charge on the second day of the case. On Wednesday, Lord Renucci jailed Kerr for five-and-a-half years. Tierney was sentenced to four-and-a-half years. The pair, both of Glenrothes, will be supervised for a further two years on their release. A non-harassment order was also imposed banning them from approaching or contacting the victim for an indefinite period. Prosecutor Brian Bell explained at the hearing in Dundee how the victim was brutally set upon. The advocate depute said: 'He was punched on the head and knocked to the ground. 'Both were seen to repeatedly punch and kick him on the head and body while he was there. 'Security and others came to assist and were pulled away. 'The incident appeared to have been brief but he was described as being kicked and punched with force.' The assailants were held and insisted they had been attacked. Tierney claimed he had been knocked out and when he came to, spotted Kerr fighting with others. The victim was rushed to hospital and his horrific injuries included 'external internal damage' to one of his eyes. Mr Bell said : 'He has suffered the permanent loss of vision in his right eye.' It remains a possibility he may need to have it removed at a later stage. He already suffered from a sight condition prior to the assault. The man further needed extensive and expensive dental work for six broken teeth. Mr Bell stated the ordeal has had 'life changing consequences'. Kerr's lawyer David Taylor said in Glasgow the former bricklayer had been in 'a spiral of decline' at the time due to a string of personal issues. He said: 'He is ashamed of his behaviour. He wishes to convey his apologies to the victim.' Gordon Martin, defending Tierney, said it appeared in a pre-sentencing report the thug was trying to 'minimise' his involvement but that had 'not been his intention'. Lord Renucci stated both were said to have 'anger management' issues and were 'no stranger to the courts' due to their criminal records. He said: 'You have both pleaded guilty to what can only be described as a brutal, cowardly, alcohol-fuelled attack on a vulnerable victim. 'The impact and consequences of your actions have been shattering to him and will be lifelong.'

‘Bandanna burglar' returned to scene
Nicholas Kerr was told by a judge he would be imprisoned again if he continued to target student flats. Photo: staff photographer A Dunedin man known as "the bandanna burglar", after a series of student-flat break-ins, has returned to the scene of the crime, a court has heard. Nicholas Scott Kerr, 36, was jailed for three years two months in 2021 after being convicted of burgling 14 flats, stealing more than $20,000 of items including underwear, and cutting holes in the curtains of seven women's houses. Kerr would wear dark clothing and a bandanna covering his face, hence the moniker, and it was two years before he was finally caught and brought to justice. This week, the defendant came before the Dunedin District Court again — this time on the relatively low-level charge of unlawfully being in an enclosed yard. While the charge carried a maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment, Judge David Robinson — who locked Kerr up in 2021 — voiced his worry. The crime happened in Queen St, just a couple of houses down from other homes the defendant had previously targeted. "While on its face you walked through a property, when I look at your history this is a returning to the scene of the crime," the judge said. "I have real concerns this was a return to form." According to court documents, one of three female residents was in her lounge about midnight on August 22 last year. Kerr had walked down the unlit driveway and activated a motion-triggered light. The victim saw the man run down the side of the property towards a rear deck, then "hunkered down in fear and called the police", a police summary said. A dog unit picked up Kerr's scent at the scene and tracked him to Knox Church. Counsel Sarah Cochrane argued a deferred sentence was appropriate, but Judge Robinson disagreed. "Your history of propensity to target flats occupied by young women ... warrants something more punitive," he said. Police released this identikit photo several years ago as they tracked a man responsible for a series of break-ins. Image: NZ Police Kerr was sentenced to 50 hours' community work but it came with "a very clear warning". "You need to understand, if there's a repeat of this, the sentence simply goes up and I'd have no hesitation in jailing you," the judge said. Kerr's earlier burglary spree began in 2018 when he entered a student flat in Queen St occupied by 10 females and cut a hole in two of their bedroom curtains. He went on to repeat the acts and would often steal items which were later sold using a fictitious Facebook profile. Kerr, who had previous convictions for violence, blackmail and dishonesty, admitted to the Parole Board in July 2023 his crimes had a sexual motive. He was released from the Otago Corrections Facility after the board heard he would receive specialist sex-offender treatment quicker in the community. But at a monitoring hearing five months later, it was revealed Kerr was yet to start any therapy and had changed his story about what drove the break-ins, claiming it was his need for drug money that fuelled him. Timeline December 2021: Nicholas Kerr is sentenced to three years two months' imprisonment for 14 burglaries in Dunedin's student sector. March 2022: Kerr is finally unmasked after losing a name-suppression appeal. July 2023: He is granted parole after admitting the break-ins had a sexual element. December: Kerr tells the Parole Board at a monitoring hearing the burglaries were actually drug-related. August 2024: Police are called when female students find him creeping around the side of their Queen St flat. May 2025: Kerr pleads guilty to unlawfully being in a yard and is sentenced to 50 hours' community work.

Dawson's Creek became a TV sensation when it first aired in the late 90s, although of its stars looks almost unrecognisable. The series first aired back in 1998 and ran for six seasons before coming to an end in 2003. Although it had a short tenure on TV, it became an instant hit across the globe. One of the most beloved characters on the show as Jack McPhee (played by Kerr Smith) Despite not appearing in the first season, he became a hit when he joined in season two.
