Lane closed on Highway 403 near Main Street in Hamilton after tractor-trailer crash
A partial closure of Highway 403, close to Main Street in Hamilton, is expected to remain in place for an undetermined amount of time Friday following a tractor-trailer collision overnight. The closure is in place as morning commuters make their way in and out of the city. The crash happened around 11 p.m. Thursday and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) initially said that three westbound lanes were closed as "clean-up efforts" were underway. In an update at 3:38 a.m., OPP said the two left lanes had re-opened, while the right lane remained closed. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CBC Hamilton Friday morning that the lane will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time as repair to the guardrail is ongoing. No one was injured in the collision, OPP said.

‘Absolutely tragic': 77-year-old man struck and killed on Hwy. 401 near Pearson Airport

A 77-year-old Mississauga man was killed early Saturday morning after being struck by a passing vehicle while standing on Highway 401 eastbound near Pearson Airport, police say. It happened shortly after 5 a.m., on eastbound 401 approaching Dixon Road, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CP24. OPPP OPP Sgt. Officials say the man had exited his SUV after an earlier collision when he was struck, describing the incident as 'absolutely tragic.' Schmidt warns drivers never to leave their vehicles on major highways, even in the event of a crash. The man, along with two others, were rushed to hospital, though the condition of the other two remain unknown at this time. 'Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased in hospital a short time later. An absolute tragic outcome here this morning,' Schmidt said. Major closures around Highway 401, 427 As of 7 a.m., Highway 401 eastbound remains closed at the Highway 427 transfer near Pearson Airport, Schmidt said. 'If you're on the 401 eastbound, you'll be forced onto Highway 427 north or south, or you can get off at Renforth Drive,' Schmidt explained. 'If you're coming up Highway 427 north, you will not be able to get onto 401 eastbound. You'll be forced west.' In a news release, police say, 'Eglinton Avenue to Dixon Road will be closed for several hours for the investigation.' OPP urging drivers to stay in vehicles after crashes Investigators from the OPP's Collision Reconstruction Team remain on scene, speaking to witnesses and working to determine what happened in the moments leading up to the crash. Schmidt stressed that exiting a vehicle on a live highway is dangerous, even after a crash. 'Standing outside a highway on a live lane, after a collision… unfortunately, just an absolutely tragic situation," he said. 'If you have a breakdown, if you have an issue with your vehicle, we don't want to see people being pedestrians out on the highway.' Stretch of Highway 401 closed in Etobicoke after man fatally struck by vehicle: OPP
A man is dead after being hit by passing vehicle on Highway 401 in Etobicoke early Saturday morning after he was involved in a collision with a tractor trailer, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say. The incident happened around 5 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Dixon Road, Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in a video posted on X. An SUV and a tractor trailer were involved in a collision, he said. The driver of the SUV exited the vehicle and was then struck by another passing vehicle. The driver was taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead, Schmidt said. Two other people were also taken to hospital. Highway 401 eastbound is closed at the transfer lanes approaching Highway 427, he said. Drivers will be redirected either to Renforth Drive or Highway 427 north or south. Drivers travelling on Highway 427 northbound will have no access to Highway 401 eastbound. Westbound lines of Highway 401 are unaffected. Schmidt said it will take "some time" until the highway reopens. Officers are slowly working on turning around drivers who are stuck in a closure between Eglinton Avenue E. and the collision scene, he said.

More rock-throwing incidents from highway overpasses reported in Niagara Region: OPP
OPP appeal for witnesses in connection with multiple rock-throwing incidents off highways near St. Catharines. (OPP) Ontario Provincial Police are investigating another incident of rock-throwing from highway overpasses in Niagara Region. In a video posted to social media, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the latest occurrence happened at 7 a.m. on Thursday along the QEW near Mountain and Montrose roads in Niagara Falls. Schmidt said a witness reported seeing two or three individuals throwing stones from a railway overpass. Their vehicle was damaged as a result, but no injuries were reported, he said. 'This is certainly a very serious matter that could result in serious injuries or even fatalities, depending on what comes through someone's windshield as they're going down the highway, completely unaware that someone's causing mischief from above,' Schmidt said. Police are asking for anyone with information, including dashcam videos, to contact Niagara OPP at 905-356-1311 or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Earlier this month, the OPP laid charges against two youths in connection with separate highway rock-throwing incidents in Markham. One of those incidents caused a driver to lose consciousness and resulted in a serious collision that left two people with life-threatening injuries, while another shattered the windshield of an occupied GO bus on Hwy. 48.

Commercial truck driver charged for speeding, weaving through Hwy 400 traffic: OPP

A provincial police officer stopped a commercial motor vehicle on Highway 400 in Innisfil for speeding and weaving through traffic, OPP says. In a post on social media Thursday morning, police say as the officer approached, the truck driver was trying to complete his pre-trip inspection paperwork. Ultimately, the officer ended up laying multiple charges against the driver and the company. 'Don't be in such a hurry. Slow down and be safe,' stated OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in the online post. Police launched 'Operation Safe Driver Week' this week, which targets dangerous driving habits among motorists, including commercial vehicle operators. During the week-long safety blitz, officers will be out on heightened patrols, monitoring for speeding, log book violations, and equipment issues, including faulty brakes and unsecured loads. Operation Safe Driver week runs until Sunday. Related
