With Stanley Cup over, Calgary Flames' two first-round draft picks locked in
Article content The Panthers aren't going to be losing much sleep over losing the pick, although they might not have much sleep to lose as they celebrate their second straight Stanley Cup win. The Flames also hold the No. 18 overall pick in Friday's draft, which came to them as the result of the deal that saw them send Jacob Markstrom to the New Jersey Devils last year. That trade also netted them the services of young defenceman Kevin Bahl, who enjoyed a solid first season in Calgary. They do not, however, have their own pick, which would have been No. 16 but instead is in the hands of the Montreal Canadiens as the result of a 2022 trade that saw Treliving package the pick with Sean Monahan in a cap-clearing move. The Flames also have two first-round picks in the 2026 draft and had two last year as well, which they used to selected Zayne Parekh (ninth overall) and Matvei Gridin (28th overall).

What will New Jersey Devils' playoff ouster mean for Calgary Flames on draft day?
Article content The Flames, meanwhile, landed a top-four defenceman in Kevin Bahl and created a roster spot for rising-star netminder Dustin Wolf. Bahl, 24, finished third on the team in average icetime during his first campaign in Calgary, while Wolf nearly willed his squad to a wild-card berth and is a shoo-in to be a finalist for the Calder Trophy. Calgary's general manager, Craig Conroy, will now hope to cash in the Devils' first-round pick on a future difference-maker. It's no secret that the Flames' scouting staff will be focused on centres, since that is a thin spot on the organizational depth chart. Among the pivot prospects who could be available in the range of No. 18 are Braeden Cootes (Seattle Thunderbirds), Brady Martin (Soo Greyhounds), Jack Nesbitt (Windsor Spitfires), Cullen Potter (Arizona State Sun Devils) and Cole Reschny (Victoria Royals). The Flames also hold the Florida Panthers' first-round holler, which will likely slot somewhere in the 20s. That hinges on how far the Panthers advance as they try to defend their title.

Game Day Preview: The Calgary Flames vs The Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas Golden Knights center Jack Eichel (9) shoots the puck past Calgary Flames defenseman Kevin Bahl (7) in the second period of their game at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, Dec 29, 2024. Vegas beat Calgary 3-0 (Photo: Candice Ward-Imagn Images) The Calgary Flames (36-27-12, fourth in the Pacific Division, five points away from the second wild-card spot) will host the Vegas Golden Knights (45-22-8, first in the Pacific Division, 79.9% to win Division). This will be the third of four meetings between the two teams. Vegas dominated both previous matchups Advertisement This will be a big test for the Flames who are coming off a comfortable and a morale-lifting 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. While that was a matchup the Flames were expected to win, the Knights are a completely different beast. The Knights have already locked in their playoff spot, and are looking to clinch the Pacific division title. They have tremendous offensive power with the likes of Mark Stone, Conn Smythe Trophy candidate Jack Eichel and two-way defenseman Shea Theodore. This Vegas team comes into Thursday with the best power play percentage overall AND in the last 30 days. Talk about pressure… But let's think positive: A win for the home side will be a MASSIVE game-changer. And it can happen. This season, the Flames have registered wins against teams like Winnipeg and Washington, the two teams who are on their way to owning the best records in their respective conferences. There is plenty to be optimistic about in this game. HEAD 2 HEAD Based on both prior games this season, the Calgary Flames have the eighth-worst save percentage against the Vegas Golden Knights at even-strength situations. While the Flames did go 5-of-6 (83.33%) on the PK, Dan Vladar (who was the goalie in both those games) will be rested according to pre-game reports to make way for Dustin Wolf to be in goal. We've only had good things to say about him. Advertisement But no matter who is the goalie, the Knights offense love dishing shots on them as Vegas unloaded Vladar with 37.5 shots per game, the third-most shots on goal to any team all season. On the other side, the Flames having been shutout in both games against the Knights. In fact, they are the ONLY team in the league to have yet to score against Vegas. It doesn't take much to figure out that if there is a 'prove it' game for the Flames offense to break out in, this is that game. Especially, for their power play unit…. and especially for a team that wants to prove that they belong in the playoff picture. But it might be an uphill battle considering that Calgary has dispensed only 23.5 shots on goal per game to the Knights, the second-worst to any team this season. Calgary faithful need to pack the Saddledome and really get loud and rally the Flames to squeeze out a W.

No Excuses As Flames Prepare To Make Final Playoff Push
It's no secret the Calgary Flames struggled heading into the 4-Nations Face-off break. The team lost three straight games before the start of the international competition kicked off. They were 2-5-1 down the stretch and 4-5-1 during their last 10 games. You could point out the obvious fatigue with the Flames playing those 10 contests in just 17 evenings. You could also mention they were without a couple of key pieces in Connor Zary and Kevin Bahl, who missed 15 and eight games respectively. Refreshed after vacations and at least one proposal, the Flames players also welcomed back both Zary and Bahl on Tuesday during their first practice in more than 10 days. With a full complement of players expected to be available when they play their first game after Thursday's crowning of the 4-Nations Face-off champion, the Flames will have no excuses available if they fall further behind the Vancouver Canucks for the last wildcard spot. Just three points separate the Flames from the Canucks. Each has 27 games remaining. The path should prove challenging for the Flames though. If they make it, they'll have earned it. The first game back on Sunday is a warmup against the San Jose Sharks. The next six are road games against the Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers and Dallas Stars. Yikes. The Capitals are the best in the Eastern Conference so far this season. The Panthers are defending Stanley Cup champions and both the Hurricanes and Stars have eyes on joining that list. Things have not gone well historically against the Lightning, either, and their meeting at the Saddledome earlier this season was as lopsided as NHL games get. That stretch leads the Flames right into the trade deadline, where they'll have decisions to make with a number of pending unrestricted free agents. Those will be heavily influenced by how GM Craig Conroy's team performs during this critical road swing.
