LyondellBasell in talks to sell some European assets to AEQUITA

June 5 (Reuters) - Chemical maker LyondellBasell (LYB.N), opens new tab said on Thursday it is in exclusive talks with Munich-based investment firm AEQUITA for the sale of certain olefin and polyolefin assets in Europe. LyondellBasell launched a strategic review of its European operations last year in a bid to navigate macroeconomic volatility. Chemical companies have been struggling due to weaker demand and rising raw material costs, especially in Europe. A rigorous regulatory landscape is also compelling businesses to reassess their approach in the region. "There was never going to be a great option to separate these unprofitable and cash negative assets, at least in today's cyclically depressed market," Vertical Research Partners analyst Kevin McCarthy said. "While the deal at hand will be cash negative to Lyondell, it does provide for a clean exit that will allow management to advance its corporate strategy, while also mitigating cash bleed on an operating basis." The sites to be sold, which are located in France, Germany, the UK and Spain, were part of previously announced strategic assessments, the company said. LyondellBasell's shares rose marginally in morning trading following the announcement. The companies have signed an agreement, a so-called 'put option deed', under which AEQUITA will enter a form purchase agreement if LyondellBasell exercises its put option after the conclusion of certain works council consultation processes. "We see the deal as a net positive for LYB, as it streamlines LYB's global portfolio, frees up capital, and exits lower EBITDA generating businesses with future pension and environmental liabilities," Wells Fargo analysts said. The proposed deal is expected to close in the first half of 2026.

Bipartisan panel should tackle national debt: Kevin McCarthy

(NewsNation) — Former U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggests lawmakers could more easily make tough decisions on federal budget cuts if a bipartisan committee with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans worked the problem. Government spending cuts and tax policy are at the heart of the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act' that President Trump wants the GOP-controlled Congress to send him. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the measure as currently drafted would add trillions to the deficit, and now some Republicans are having second thoughts. McCarthy joined 'CUOMO' on Wednesday and said Congress could make greater headway on reducing the national debt if there were a select committee, like the evenly balanced panel he set up to study China. No taxes on overtime pay: What to know about tax break in GOP budget bill The California Republican also referenced the commission known as 'BRAC' that previously recommended U.S. military base closures on an up-or-down basis, meaning lawmakers couldn't tinker with the list. 'Structure dictates behavior. So, if we change the structure on some of these problems, the behavior would be different,' McCarthy said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Former Kevin McCarthy aide to lead permitting agency

The Trump administration has tapped a former House Republican leadership aide to lead an agency tasked with accelerating permitting reviews. Emily Domenech — who is becoming the Permitting Council's executive director — served as a top energy and environment issues aide to California Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy during his time as House speaker. Domenech also worked briefly under current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and in the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. Most recently, she's been a lobbyist at the firm Boundary Stone Partners. Advertisement 'Time to build baby, build!' Domenech posted Wednesday on the social media site X about her appointment, which does not require Senate confirmation.

McCarthy tears into Republicans over Trump budget bill delay: ‘A real misstep'

Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) tore into House Republicans over sinking a key committee vote that would help advance President Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' calling it a 'real misstep.' 'The stock market seems like it is moving up. Now, if Congress can start doing the things that President Trump's doing, it would even help us more. Today was a real misstep on the Republicans part, in the budget side, that four of them looked out for themselves instead of moving the bill along, reconciliation,' McCarthy during his appearance on John Catsimatidis's radio show, 'Cats Roundtable' on WABC 770 AM. Five House GOP fiscal hawks — Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), Josh Brecheen (R-Okla.), Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) and Lloyd Smucker (R-Pa.) — voted against advancing the measure that encompasses Trump's legislative agenda on Friday. The vote was 16-21. 'To be clear—I fully support the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). My vote today in the Budget Committee is a procedural requirement to preserve the committee's opportunity to reconsider the motion to advance OBBB,' Smucker said Friday after the vote on social media platform X. Fiscal hawks have argued that cuts to Medicaid are insufficient and that reforms should come into effect sooner, while more moderate Republicans are looking for an increase in the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap. The measure, which the Republicans are hoping to pass before Memorial Day, includes removing taxes on overtime and tips, extending Trump's 2017 tax cuts, along with new Medicaid work requirements for 'able-bodied' adults, which is projected to cause millions to lose health coverage. The bill would also lead to repealing green energy tax credits, which Democrats passed in 2022. McCarthy also appeared to take a slight dig at current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) 'What really shows is, once President Trump gets back in the country, I mean, poor President Trump is being the president the speaker at the same time, I think we'll get that bill through,' McCarthy said. The House Budget Committee will reconvene on Sunday at 10 p.m., The Hill reported. 'Well, they're back in this week, and I think the president will be back in and really looking to these members to get the job done, because if they don't get the job done, your taxes go up, and that's not going to happen, and it has a lot of the promises the president made about no tax on tips and others, and it will just help unleash the economy, because it would bring security and stability, that they know this is this is not going to happen, any tax increases,' McCarthy told Catsimatidis.
