Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed said 'Operasi Tanpa Debu' (Dust-Free Operation) was aimed at enhancing cleanliness in high-traffic zones in anticipation of increased tourists for the coming year. 'Besides being rubbish-free, we want the city to be dust-free and dirt-free to better welcome our visitors. Khalid (centre) says scheduled cleaning work at tourist spots in Iskandar Puteri and Mersing are also underway. 'We want the streets to look like those in developed countries – well-maintained and always looking new. 'This will no longer be just a vision,' said Khalid during a cleaning operation at Legaran Segget, which involved three high-pressure cleaning lorries and a road-sweeper machine, supported by 15 cleaning personnel. He added that SWCorp, in collaboration with SWM Environment and Johor Baru City Council, began the cleaning operation in June on a scheduled basis at key public areas. 'We started work in tourist-oriented areas such as Puteri Harbour in Iskandar Puteri, Laman Kreatif Kluang and Dataran Kembara in Mersing. 'Public spaces such as markets, transport terminals, walkways and other tourist spots are being prioritised,' said Khalid, adding that the cleaning process was completely chemical-free and relied only on water pressure. He added that SWCorp has taken this new approach across the state, starting with areas that have a high volume of tourists. 'We understand that cleanliness and aesthetic appeal in these areas will attract more tourists to explore the surrounding communities,' said Khalid. 'Legaran Segget will soon have brand-new look and visitors from beyond Johor and Malaysia will return home with stories of Johor Baru's charm and beauty.'

QIIB reports net profit of QR 689 mn in H1 2025, approves 24% interim dividend

Tribune News Network Doha Qatar International Islamic Bank (QIIB) has reported a net profit of QR 689 million for the first half of 2025, marking a 5.2 percent increase over the same period last year. Earnings per share stood at QR 0.41. Announcing the results, QIIB Board of Directors Chairman Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Thani bin Abdullah Al Thani emphasised the bank's sustainable growth and strategic alignment with Qatar's robust economic trajectory. The board of directors, following its meeting to review the financial statements, approved an interim cash dividend of 24 percent of the nominal share value (QR 0.24 per share), subject to approval by the Qatar Central Bank. The dividend will be distributed to shareholders registered as of July 28, 2025. Highlighting the bank's resilience and innovation-driven performance, Dr Khalid said, 'QIIB continues to build on its strong fundamentals, achieving sustainable growth while supporting the national economy. We are leveraging Qatar's progressive economic environment to expand our services and customer base.' Total assets of the bank grew to QR60.6 billion, up 2.2 percent from the first half of 2024, while net financing assets reached QR39.0 billion. Customer deposits rose by 4.4 percent to QR42.2 billion, and shareholders' equity increased to QR9.8 billion. The capital adequacy ratio under Basel III stood at a robust 19.65 percent. Moody's and Fitch have maintained QIIB's credit ratings at 'A2' and 'A' respectively, both with a stable outlook, reflecting the bank's asset quality, profitability, and liquidity position. QIIB CEO Dr Abdulbasit Ahmad Al Shaibei noted that net operating income rose by 11.6 percent year-on-year to QR1.1 billion. He attributed the strong performance to operational efficiency—with a cost-to-income ratio of 18.9 percent —and continued digital transformation. He added that asset quality remained strong, with non-performing financing at just 2.97 percent and full coverage for such exposures. The bank's social responsibility initiatives in education, healthcare, and sports also continued, including its strategic partnership with the Qatar Football Association. On human capital development, Al Shaibei reaffirmed QIIB's commitment to empowering Qatari talent, in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030. 'We are proud of our achievements in H1 2025 and remain committed to delivering sustainable value to our clients and shareholders,'he concluded.

Off In 1 Second? Expert's 'Mathematical Debunking' Of Air India Crash Theory

New Delhi: Slamming some western media outlets for speculating that one of the pilots of the doomed Ahmedabad-London Air India Dreamliner moved the switches from run to cutoff - starving the engines of fuel and causing the crash - deliberately, an aviation expert has said the math does not add up. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) investigating the June 12 crash, in which at least 260 people were killed, including 241 on board the flight, released its preliminary report on the crash last week, and one of the key points that emerged was that the fuel switches moved within a gap of a second. Some media reports have implied this was deliberate, and aviation expert Captain Eshan Khalid strongly disagreed. The AAIB report said the aircraft achieved its maximum airspeed of 180 knots at about 08:08:42 UTC, and then the fuel cutoff switches for engines 1 and 2 transitioned from the run to the cutoff position one after another with a time gap of 1 second. The engine 1 fuel switch was moved from cutoff to run at 08:08:52 UTC, and engine 2 at 08:08:56. The report notes one pilot asked the other why he had cut off (the fuel to the engine), and he responded that he did not. Speaking to NDTV on Saturday, Mr Khalid said, "I would like to throw in a new mathematical calculation that debunks the stories that have been floating around. At the timestamp of 42 seconds, the fuel switches transitioned within one second from run to cut-off... That means within one second, someone - fastest fingers in the cockpit - put both the switches out in just 500 milliseconds. So, in one second, both of them are out." "Then the narrative is that the other pilot happened to see this and asked, 'why did you switch off or cut off the engine?' If this is the truth, then I think the proposer of this story has to now tell why that person waited for 10 seconds to reverse this switch," he explained. Even the western media reports, he said, had not made the case that both pilots were trying to kill themselves. "For the sake of argument, let's assume one pilot was. The other pilot was trying to live. Then I think he should be as fast as the first one. He put one fuel switch on at the 52-second timestamp and the other at 56. So, a four-second gap in putting (switches) on in an aircraft that is dying, and both of them know they are dead if they don't. Shouldn't this have been in milliseconds?" he pointed out. Mr Khalied then explained that he thinks an electrical signal turned off the fuel, and the switches were not moved at that point. They were probably only moved later when the pilots were trying to restart the engines to avoid the crash, which they could not prevent. The Air India Dreamliner 787-8 crashed on the premises of a medical college 32 seconds after take-off.

Death in riots: Delhi HC seeks police reply on plea

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has issued notice to the city police on a plea moved by Mohd Khalid, an accused in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots case that led to the death of head constable Ratan Lal. Justice Shalinder Kaur, on July 14, directed the police to file their response before the next hearing scheduled for October 14. The prosecution also reserved its right to argue on the maintainability of the petition. Khalid was arrested in June 2023 after being named as an accused in the fifth supplementary chargesheet filed in the case. He was granted bail in September last year. The trial court had, in November 2023, framed charges against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 148, 186, 188, 302 (murder), 323, 325, 332, 333, 353, 427, and 435, as well as Section 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Challenging the framing of charges, Khalid's plea argues that there is no prima facie evidence or material on record that establishes his involvement or a direct nexus with the alleged offences. He contends that even if the allegations and witness statements recorded under Section 161 CrPC are presumed true, they still do not make him liable. The FIR registered at Dayalpur Police Station, contains serious allegations against him. It states that around 1pm on the day of the incident, a mob carrying lathis, baseball bats, iron rods, and stones assembled on the main Wazirabad Road and turned violent, ignoring warnings by senior police officers. The FIR mentions that protestors attacked police personnel, including DCP Shahdara, ACP Gokulpuri and Head Constable Ratan Lal. All three fell on the road during the attack and sustained grievous injuries. While several officers were injured, Ratan Lal succumbed to his injuries. DCP Shahdara was found unconscious with serious head injuries. Advocates RHA Sikander, Mohd. Hasan, and Heema appeared for Khalid. SPP Ashish Dutta and Advocate Mayank represented the Delhi police. The matter is scheduled to be be heard next on October 14.
