Arab League Observes International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Media
Mohamed Mandour The League of Arab States marks the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian Media annually on 11 May, in accordance with Resolution 508 adopted by the Council of Arab Information Ministers on 22 September 2022. Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, said that this observance transcends mere symbolism. It constitutes a renewed and urgent appeal to the international community to extend tangible support to Palestinian media institutions, in light of the egregious violations and systemic suppression of press freedoms perpetrated by the Israeli occupation authorities. These transgressions have reached a devastating peak amid the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, wherein journalists—like countless unarmed civilians—have been deliberately targeted while discharging their professional duties under dire humanitarian and security conditions marked by relentless bombardment, blockade, and deprivation. Ambassador Khattabi reaffirmed the League's unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian media sector amidst the continuing onslaught on Gaza and the entirety of the occupied Palestinian territories. He noted that, as of the end of April 2025, 212 journalists have lost their lives, while at least 400 others have sustained injuries, rendering the Gaza Strip the most perilous environment for journalism globally. He further condemned the persistent obstruction by the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian media's work in all its facets, as well as the blatant disregard for international humanitarian law—particularly Article 79 of the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions—which mandates the protection and safety of journalists during armed conflict. Ambassador Khattabi underscored the imperative of enforcing these protections in accordance with internationally recognised professional and ethical standards, and within the framework of binding legal instruments, notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War

Israel's war on Gaza has killed 209 Palestinian journalists: Ambassador Khattabi - Foreign Affairs
An estimated 209 Palestinian journalists have been killed during Israel's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi said on Friday, calling the toll 'unprecedented' and a grave assault on press freedom. Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, made the statement on World Press Freedom Day, warning that the conflict has become one of the deadliest for media professionals in modern history. Speaking from Cairo, Khattabi highlighted Israel's genocidal war in Gaza as a daily assault marked by the widespread killing of civilians—especially women and children—alongside the collapse of humanitarian access and systematic targeting of journalists. He accused Israel of deliberately barring international media from entering Gaza while targeting local reporters in 'flagrant breach of international legal conventions.' The Arab League marked World Press Freedom Day by issuing a formal statement honouring the role of independent media in challenging disinformation and resisting what it called 'false Israeli narratives.' Khattabi called for urgent international action to protect journalists in conflict zones, including the development of new legal frameworks to respond to the specific risks of modern warfare and digital surveillance. 'This must be pursued through multilateral cooperation with international and regional bodies,' he said, advocating for a legal system that guarantees the physical safety and moral protection of journalists working under fire. He also stressed the need for a 'balanced approach' to press freedom—one that upholds journalistic ethics and combats disinformation while defending the right to access information and speak truth to power. The occasion, he said, is a time to honour the sacrifices of journalists who risk — and often lose — their lives in pursuit of truth. World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation by UNESCO, to recognise the role of a free press in promoting accountability, transparency, and human rights.
