What If Brendan Shanahan Joined A Potential NHL Expansion Franchise?

Brendan Shanahan is a free agent. But where will he go next? The former president of the Toronto Maple Leafs brings a wealth of experience, a Hall of Fame ring as a player and a marquee name with him. Simply put, he could probably choose a number of NHL destinations right now. But what about a franchise that doesn't exist yet? NHL expansion seems like a sure thing in the future and one of the leading candidates is Houston. As first reported in The Hockey News' Money and Power issue back in January, the top ownership candidate is Dan Friedkin, a billionaire car distributor who also owns British soccer team Everton and a film company that produced Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States and a major TV market, so it's a great target for the NHL. Now imagine if Shanahan was the expansion team's first president. Houston gets instant credibility and someone whom the NHL trusts – let's not forget that 'Shanny' worked for the league's player safety department. While the Maple Leafs did not meet their goal of winning a Stanley Cup during Shanahan's tenure, Toronto did have a ton of success on the ice and either drafted or acquired a mass of talent. Shanahan left the franchise with a solid GM in Brad Treliving and a well-respected coach in Craig Berube. That Shanahan would be an asset for Houston is not a question; only the timing remains. The NHL has not green-lit any expansion process right now, so hypothetically, we'd be looking at 2026-27 at the earliest – and let's face it, the league is in no rush. Having said that, Houston seems to be one of the favorites if and when the NHL expands again. Other cities in the mix include Atlanta and Phoenix, and it will be interesting to see if the next wave involves two cities at once or staggered over the course of a year. (Full disclosure: The Hockey News publisher-owner W. Graeme Roustan is supporting the Atlanta group led by Vernon Krause and his South Forsyth project.) Regardless, keep an eye on Shanahan in the coming years. He already took on a major challenge in Toronto, so what would be new and exciting for him? Helping build an expansion team from scratch might be the answer. Martin Scorsese Docuseries From Rebecca Miller Set at Apple TV+

Apple TV+ is continuing its relationship with Martin Scorsese. The streamer is moving forward with a five-part docuseries about the iconic filmmaker, which will be titled 'Mr. Scorsese.' The project comes from director Rebecca Miller, who is known for her work on 'Personal Velocity: Three Portraits' and 'She Came To Me.' Miller is also married to one of Scorsese's favorite actors, Daniel Day-Lewis. 'I am so grateful to have been given the artistic freedom and access to create a cinematic portrait of one of our greatest living artists, Martin Scorsese,' Miller said in a statement to press. 'His work and life are so vast and so compelling that the piece evolved from one to five parts over a five year period; crafting this documentary alongside my longtime collaborators has been one of the defining experiences of my life as a filmmaker.' Miller and Damon Cardasis at Round Films will executive produce the series alongside Cindy Tolan, Miller's longtime creative collaborator. Rick Yorn, Christopher Donnelly and Julie Yorn also executive produce with Ron Burkle serving as producer and Robert Fernandez and Patrick Walmsley serving as co-executive producers. The series is presented by Expanded Media and Round Films in association with LBI Entertainment and Moxie Pictures. 'Mr. Scorsese' promises to have exclusive, unrestricted access to Scorsese's private archives. The docuseries will start with the director's New York University student films and run through present day, exploring the themes that have permeated the iconic filmmaker's decades of work. It will be anchored by extensive conversations with the filmmaker as well as never-before-seen interviews with his friends, family and collaborators. Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, Jay Cocks and Rodrigo Prieto will all appear in the project alongside Scorsese's children, his wife Helen Morris and the director's close childhood friends. This docuseries continues Scorsese's collaboration with Apple TV+. The company produced 'Killers of the Flower Moon' alongside Paramount Pictures, and Scorsese recently appeared in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's comedy for the streamer, 'The Studio.' Cannes 2025: Robert De Niro Honoured With Palme d'Or For Lifetime Work

Last Updated: Leonardo DiCaprio took the stage to present the award to his Killers of the Flower Moon co-star Robert De Niro. The 78th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on May 13 with a grand tribute to cinematic excellence as legendary actor Robert De Niro was honoured with the prestigious Honorary Palme d'Or, a lifetime achievement award presented to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the world of cinema. In the past, iconic names like George Lucas, Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Tom Cruise, and Jane Fonda have received this coveted recognition. Marking a heartfelt moment on the opening day of Cannes 2025, Leonardo DiCaprio took the stage to present the award to his Killers of the Flower Moon co-star. While doing so, DiCaprio delivered an emotional tribute, stating, 'Every once in a while, even the most private giants deserve their moment. A moment to be acknowledged. Not just for their work, but for the quiet, lasting influence they've had on so many lives. On my life." The audience gave a standing ovation to the 81-year-old actor as he climbed the steps to receive the honorary Palme d'Or. De Niro, known for his outstanding roles in films such as The Godfather, Taxi Driver, and Cape Fear, took the stage to also warn the audience about the current threat to democracy. 'In my country, we are fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted," De Niro started his speech, taking a strong stand. Then he proceeded to throw light on the importance of art in such crucial times. 'Art embraces diversity. That's why art is a threat," the legendary actor stated, taking aim at the American president. Calling Trump 'America's Philistine president," De Niro strongly criticised Trump's cuts on funding and lack of support for the arts, humanities, and education. He also rebuked the US president's decision to put a 100 per cent tariff on films produced outside the country and stated, 'You can't put a price on creativity, but apparently you can put a tariff on it." Wrapping up his speech, Robert De Niro left the audience with a powerful message, urging action against the ills of society, not through violence, but with passion and determination. He called on everyone present in the room to demonstrate their strength and commitment by celebrating the power of art through this prestigious festival. First Published:
