Stop rhubarb from 'bolting' and getting too woody by doing one task in June
Rhubarb plants tend to grow their thickest and most succulent stalks in early June - but gardeners must pay attention to the plant in the next few weeks or they may not get any harvest at all Rhubarb boasts its plumpest and most succulent stalks come early June, yet in the upcoming weeks gardeners should keep a keen eye on the plant's crown to secure a harvest. With rising temperatures, rhubarb may start bolting, a stress response where it stops yielding edible produce to focus on disseminating seeds. When bolting occurs, rhubarb ceases to generate edible crops and shifts to sprouting slender woody flowers that significantly enfeeble the plant. However, Kimberly Killebrew, an avid gardener and creator of Daring Gourmet, has shared a simple trick to thwart bolting by removing any seeding pods promptly before they propagate. She remarked: "Ideally, you really want to avoid letting your rhubarb plant even get to the point where there are flower stalks. "Initially, these long shoots start off as a seed pod at the base of the plant. As soon as you notice these seed pods, remove them." Seed pods initially appear as tender green shoots encircling the crown of rhubarb, from which the stalks typically sprout, reports the Express. These shoots might boast red or pink striations, but their resemblance to a cabbage head or a clenched fist is unmistakable. Fortunately, these seeding pods are remarkably delicate and can be effortlessly removed if identified swiftly. Upon encountering them, simply wield a knife or gardening shears to snip them off as near to the plant's base as attainable. Should you spot any flower clusters, it's crucial to snip them off straight away, though be warned they can be quite stubborn, so ensure your garden shears are up to the task. By removing the flowers and pods, your rhubarb will then channel all its vigour into producing the largest and most succulent stalks in time for a June harvest. Kimberly advised: "With your seed pods and flower stalks removed, your rhubarb plant can now focus its energy and producing a delicious and healthy yield of edible rhubarb stalks. "Continue checking your plant frequently for new seed pods and promptly remove them." It's important to recognise that rhubarb typically starts bolting when under stress from hot weather, so regular watering is essential to prevent the soil from drying out. Consider mulching your rhubarb or placing it in a shaded area if it's potted, as keeping the plant cool is key to safeguarding your crop. Nonetheless, the most effective strategy for preserving rhubarb stalks is to inspect the plant every day, since early removal of any budding flowers greatly increases the chances of a successful growth.

Bay Area fallen hero's legacy lives on in his hometown
The Brief Spc. Zachary L. Shannon was killed in March 2013, along with four other service members, in a helicopter crash during Operation Enduring Freedom. His hometown of Dunedin is honoring his legacy, making sure his sacrifice is not forgotten. DUNEDIN, Fla. - Kimberly Allison raised four brave boys. Each one proudly served their country in the military – but her youngest, Spc. Zachary L. Shannon, never made it home. What they're saying "We have a military wall. So I see his face every day. I live it every minute of every day," said Zachary's mom, Kimberly. She also keeps him close to her heart. "I wear his dog tag, I have his bracelets on, I have the necklace he gave me that says army mom. I talk to him all the time and I know I'll see him again," said Kimberly. Zachary wasn't home long after a 12-month deployment in Korea, when he volunteered to go to Afghanistan. "He said, 'I want to go because then a soldier with a family gets to go home,' So he was home for 3 months. Then he deployed on December 14, 2012, in Afghanistan," said Kimberly. Three months later, on March 11, 2013, Zachary's helicopter crashed, killing him and four other service members in Operation Enduring Freedom. "I think if I knew he was scared it would have hurt even worse. He was not scared; it was where he wanted to be," said Kimberly. "He knew he had a job to do and he'd be home as soon as he's done." His hometown of Dunedin, where he chose to be laid to rest. It's where he played little league baseball, on a field now named after him. A portion of Alternate 19 also bears his name. So does the local VFW, now known as "SPC Zachary Shannon Memorial Post 2550." "A lot of people don't know who Zack is and what he stands for: freedom and free," said Kelly McKinley, VFW Auxillary Patriotic Instructor. Twelve years after his death, the community continues to keep his memory alive. Throughout the month of May, a display at the local library reminds people of the hero who called Dunedin home. "People need to associate a face and a name. He was a Dunedin kid. A hero. I think he represents what its all about," said Kelly. Kimberly finds comfort in knowing the community backs all military families. "You're never truly gone until you're forgotten," said Kimberly. Thanks to people like Kelly McKinley, Specialist Zachary Shannon's legacy will continue to live on. Milwaukee's Hmong scholars are on the rise — thanks in part to one local charter school
When Kimberly Vang thinks back on growing up Hmong, her mind goes to her mother — and the incredible bedtime stories she'd share. "She's really creative," Kimberly said. "She loves to learn and teach, so she'd tell me these great Hmong folktales." Kimberly remembers lying back on her pillows, eyes growing heavy as she drifted off to the sound of her mother's voice. Even then, she was connecting to her heritage, learning lessons of identity, history and heart. expand Milwaukee is home to around 15,000 Hmong residents, and Kimberly and her family are among them. She transferred to Hmong American Peace Academy just in time for first grade. Her parents were searching for a school where their kids would feel safe, supported and seen — a place rooted in values they recognized. For Kimberly, HAPA felt like home from the start. She had grown up immersed in Hmong culture — through language, family gatherings and those nighttime stories. A Hmong-centered school felt like a natural next step. In the 12 years that followed, Kimberly thrived. And her hard work paid off — she'll be attending the University of Michigan this fall, a place she calls her 'version of Harvard.' "I thought it'd be validating, knowing my effort and my grades mattered, just to be accepted." And she was more than accepted. Kimberly got into U-M's prestigious direct-entry nursing school. She chose nursing because of her family's struggles with health care. "There have been miscommunications at times, and I know how frustrating that can be. I want to make sure Hmong people, and all minorities, feel understood and cared for.' As for Kimberly's "why," she said it always came back to her parents. "Their experiences, as young Hmong immigrants, are one of my biggest motivations. Knowing that they, and so many kids around the world, didn't have access to education reminds me to stay thankful, despite the hardships.' Maybe it was those bedtime stories that sparked her curiosity; the way they taught her to listen, ask questions and understand her roots. Or maybe it was that quiet, steady drive to make her mom and dad proud. Either way, it marks an incredible ending to this chapter of Kimberly's HAPA story. Her 'folktale' — like the ones her mother once told — is rich with hope, heritage and possibility. Now, she's ready to write new chapters of her own. HAPA gave her the tools to get this far. The rest is in her hands. She's ready. Founded in 2004 with just 200 children, HAPA has grown into a thriving K4-12 charter school serving nearly 2,000 scholars on Milwaukee's northwest side. The school is committed to academic excellence, cultural preservation and lifelong success. High schoolers benefit from more than 60 clubs, athletics and AP/dual enrollment courses. HAPA is entering a bold new phase, led by the growing HAPA Foundation, Inc., and the hiring of Patrick Tevlin as its first executive director of Development. With 25 years of experience, Tevlin will guide donor relations, working alongside CEO Chris Her-Xiong, Ph.D., and Foundation Board President Jason Handal. The HAPA Foundation provides essential resources for scholars, families and staff. Its mission: foster engagement, ambassadorship and bridge the $1,000-per-scholar funding gap. 'HAPA represents the best of Milwaukee — dedicated staff and scholars, a rich cultural heritage and a commitment to excellence,' Tevlin said. 'This is the most purposeful mission I've ever joined, and I hope our philanthropic community will support these remarkable scholars.' Her-Xiong added, 'As a former refugee who founded HAPA to create brighter futures, I know the power of education and opportunity. Mr. Tevlin's leadership will help us continue to provide rigorous academics, strong character development and a deep connection to Hmong heritage. With our community's support, we can empower the next generation of leaders.' It's leaders like Kimberly, trying to make her parents proud. It's Milwaukee's future. It's all of us, coming together to invest in what matters most: our children. Join us in supporting HAPA scholars as they rise, lead and inspire. Forever Forward. To learn more about HAPA, or visit the campus, visit or email HAPA is a K4-12 charter school with a high school dedicated to career and college prep. It opened its doors in 2004 and graduated the first senior class in 2012. The school provides the broader community and HAPA scholars a high-quality education with state-of-the-art classrooms, gymnasiums, resource centers and more.
