Mat Sabu: Malaysia eyes year-round durian with R&D boost inspired by Thailand, Japan

KLANG, July 27 — The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) has made Thailand and Japan its reference in carrying out research and development (R&D) on seasonal fruits for year-round production. Its Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the efforts carried out by the Department of Agriculture (DOA) and the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) are in line with the objectives of the Campaign to Eat More Local Fruits and Vegetables. 'We are carrying out R&D, especially by DOA and MARDI, to produce new seeds and so on. The MARDI durian, for example, was produced recently in Kuala Kangsar. Delicious. High quality,' he said. Mohamad said this in his speech when launching the National Campaign to Eat More Local Fruits and Vegetables and the closing of the 4-day FAMA Fest 2025 @ Selangor at a shopping mall here today. Meanwhile, Mohamad said the KPKM is very serious in its efforts to raise the popularity of local fruits among Malaysians. He added that the government has also decided that official government functions must be served with local fruits and that it is a symbol of support for local farmers' production and to uphold its own products. 'During my visit to Thailand as the Minister of Defence, I was served food based on local fruits and vegetables throughout my time there. The same goes for Japan, almost 100 per cent local,' he said. At the same time, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said the FAMA Fest achieved its target when it recorded a sales value of more than RM800,000 through the participation of 50 local entrepreneurs and attracted more than 40,000 visitors. He said that since its introduction in 2017, FAMA Fest has been a catalyst for the economic growth of agri-entrepreneurs with the achievement in 2024 recording more than 492,000 visitors involving 949 entrepreneurs with total sales reaching RM8.8 million nationwide. 'The national target for FAMA Fest 2025 is to achieve RM5.3 million in sales value with 265,000 visitors and the involvement of 383 entrepreneurs in six selected locations,' he said. — Bernama

JPJ nets 1,194 offenders in July seat belt blitz on buses

KLANG, July 23 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued a total of 1,194 summonses to bus drivers and passengers nationwide under the Special Operation on Seat Belt Usage which began on July 1. JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said of the total, 1,108 summonses were issued to passengers, followed by 62 to drivers, and 24 cases involved the failure to install seat belts. He said among the reasons given to avoid being fined were that they were unaware seat belt usage was mandatory and that enforcement had already been gazetted. 'This excuse is unacceptable, as checks revealed that most bus operators and drivers have either made announcements or displayed notices reminding passengers to wear seat belts,' he said at a press conference after visiting the Pioneer Coachbuilder Sdn Bhd bus body manufacturing plant in Telok Gong here today. Aedy Fadly added that tourists or non-citizens would also not be exempted from action under existing provisions if found not wearing seat belts while on buses. However, he noted that overall compliance with seat belt usage on express and tour buses has shown improvement, thanks to proactive steps taken by bus operators to remind passengers. 'Overall, we are seeing an increase in compliance, and passengers are beginning to better understand the importance of wearing seat belts,' he said. — Bernama

Cops trace owner of car driven by 11-year-old child

Klang Selatan police chief Ramli Kasa said the child drove off with the car after his mother made a stop to go to the toilet in Klang yesterday morning. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have traced the owner of a car, driven by an 11-year-old child, which skidded at Jalan Telok Gong in Klang yesterday. Klang Selatan police chief Ramli Kasa said they have also identified the young driver and two other children who were passengers in the Proton Saga, Bernama reported. Footage of the incident, which happened at about 10am, has gone viral. Ramli said the 11-year-old child and one of the passengers, aged seven, are siblings and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cardholders, while the third child is their Malaysian cousin. 'An initial investigation found that the car had been driven by the mother of the two siblings from the Bandar Sultan Suleiman area at North Klang Port to her sister's house in Telok Gong, Klang. The mother had left the children for a moment to go to the toilet. 'When the woman left to go to the toilet, the 11-year-old child took the car keys and drove the younger sibling and their cousin to a shop,' he said in a statement. He said the child drove for 2km before losing control of the vehicle when approaching the shop area, causing it to skid into a drain by the roadside. No one was injured, and the front part of the car was slightly damaged. Police have recorded statements from the parents of the child driver and are investigating the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, Section 39(1) of the same law for driving without a licence (underage), as well as the Child Act 2001 to identify any elements of child neglect.
