Tanjung Harapan boat capsize: Fire Dept suspects missing victims were swept away by strong currents during towing

KLANG, June 8 — The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has not ruled out the possibility that two missing victims of a boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan yesterday were swept away by currents while the boat was being towed to the floating jetty of the Selangor Maritime Headquarters here. Port Klang Fire and Rescue Department (BBP) head, Deputy Superintendent Haikal Jammy Ngali said from initial investigations, the boat the victims were on was towed by a public boat for 0.3 nautical miles before they received a distress call regarding the incident at around 5 pm the same day. He said the department also did not rule out the possibility that the victims, who were a married couple, were thrown overboard during the capsize. 'Although the sunken boat was successfully refloated, the two victims being sought were not inside the boat, thus strengthening the fire department's theory that the two victims drifted away with the current. 'So far, the rescue team has only carried out surface search-level as opposed to deep diving because the fire department has not been able to ascertain the exact location of the capsize,' he said at a press conference which was also attended by North Klang police chief ACP S. Vijaya Rao at the search location in Tanjung Harapan here today. Meanwhile, Vijaya said the police party has not found any clues regarding the two missing victims even though the search radius covered an area of five nautical miles. Regarding the refloated boat, he said it would be taken to the Port Klang Marine Police base for further inspection and investigation, including technical aspects. 'In addition, we would also like to inform that the bodies of the three victims, including a three-year-old child who died in the incident, have been claimed by the family after the post-mortem was completed at the Shah Alam Hospital today,' he said. Vijaya also stated that the search and rescue operation was suspended at 7 pm and will resume tomorrow morning. In the capsize of the boat with six on board at about 5 pm, three individuals, including a child, died, while one survivor, Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17, was rescued, and the married couple is still missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while the missing were identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama

Police: Victims in Tanjung Harapan boat tragedy believed not to have been wearing life jackets, complicating rescue

KLANG, June 7 — All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here yesterday were believed not to be wearing life jackets. North Klang District Police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time. He said the absence of life jackets had made the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the remaining two missing victims among the six people on board more difficult. 'Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills,' he said at a press conference at the search site in Tanjung Harapan today. Vijaya said the location where the boat capsized had been identified, but strong currents may have swept the two missing victims away and caused them to drown. Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. 'The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code,' he said. In the incident at about 5 pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama

Search continues for couple in Tanjung Harapan boat tragedy

Three people drowned after the boat capsized some 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan, Klang, on Friday afternoon. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The search and rescue operation for a couple whose boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Klang, is still going on, with efforts now focused on refloating the overturned vessel. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) enforcement and excise unit operations officer Syafiq Sazali said part of the boat was successfully refloated at 2.20pm, and they had started to pump out the water, reported Berita Harian. It was reported that three people, including a three-year-old child, had drowned in the incident yesterday afternoon, with a married couple missing. Syafiq said the operation to raise the overturned boat was complex as it required divers to attach ropes underneath the boat They also had to take into account the sea current and underwater visibility. 'The rising tide helped somewhat because the boat still had some buoyancy, which made it easier to attach the ropes. During low tide, the boat would be more stuck to the seabed,' he said at a press conference. He said the team successfully lifted the rear of the boat using a crane and was waiting for divers to secure ropes underneath the bow before connecting it to the crane to lift the front section. Once the entire boat is refloated, water will be pumped out of it and the interior will be inspected to ensure there are no victims trapped inside. 'Surface search efforts are also ongoing with the help of more than four assets from involved agencies and several boats from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club,' he said. Selangor maritime department director Muhaimin Salleh said the boat was carrying six people, with only one survivor confirmed so far. The initial investigation suggested the boat lost control before capsizing about 0.3 nautical miles west of Tanjung Harapan. The missing couple has been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Those who died were the couple's son, Darren, and two others identified as Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29. All three were found inside the boat. The sole survivor has been identified as Chang Yan Qin, 17. Muhaimin said the missing couple was believed to be test-driving the boat after recent repairs.

Capsized boat at Tanjung Harapan refloated, search continues for missing couple off Port Klang

KLANG, June 7 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation to locate a couple who went missing after their boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan yesterday evening, continued today, with efforts focused on raising the sunken vessel. Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Enforcement and Excise Unit operations officer, Maritime Lieutenant Mohd Syafiq Sazali, said that the boat was partially refloated at 2.20 pm, after which the team began pumping out the water. 'The next step involves deploying divers to secure ropes to the underside of the boat to lift or elevate its front section,' he said. 'Once that is done, we will pump out the remaining water and inspect the vessel to determine if there are any victims' bodies inside,' he told reporters at the search site in Tanjung Harapan today. In the incident, which occurred around 5 pm yesterday, three individuals, including a child, were found dead, while a couple remain missing, after the boat they were in capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang. The missing victims have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife, Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. Tragically, their three-year-old son, Darren Gan, was among the three found dead in the front compartment of the boat, alongside family friends Cheu Son Hin, 50, and Fong Yong Sen, 29. Another victim, Chang Yan Qin Alvin, 17, was successfully rescued by a group of fishermen. Meanwhile, Mohd Syafiq said that the SAR operation, which resumed at 7 am today, involved four assets from various security agencies, in addition to three more provided by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC). He added that the high tide significantly aided the efforts to raise the boat, as it still had some buoyancy, making it easier for the diving team to attach the rope needed to lift it. — Bernama
