Bayern Munich maintain lead at top despite Anton's leveller for Dortmund
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund each scored twice in a rollercoaster second half for an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Klassiker on Saturday that kept the Bavarian club six points clear at the top with five games left. They have 69 points ahead of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who earlier drew 0-0 at home to Union Berlin. Bayern, who visit Inter in the Champions League quarter-final return leg on Wednesday after last week's 2-1 loss, had a slew of chances in a dominant first half. The Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was kept busy and he twice stopped Harry Kane and also blocked Michael Olise's point-blank effort in the 40th minute. Dortmund, who did not have an effort on target in the first half, silenced the home crowd three minutes after the restart when Maximilian Beier was left unmarked at the far post to head in the opener. Bayern reacted almost instantly, pouring forward as the pace picked up, and almost equalised when the Dortmund defender Waldemar Anton's clearance flew over Kobel and bounced off the crossbar. It took four minutes for Bayern to turn things around with Raphaël Guerreiro levelling in the 65th minute with a low shot before his fellow substitute Serge Gnabry put them in front with a sensational 35-metre solo effort. Dortmund, desperately hoping for a top-four spot and to secure Champions League football next season, bounced back with Anton slotting home on the rebound in the 75th after the Bayern keeper Jonas Urbig palmed Serhou Guirassy's bicycle kick into his path. Wirtz returns but Bayer Leverkusen drops more points in Bundesliga title race
BERLIN (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz returned after five weeks out but could not inspire his team to pick up anything more than a 0-0 draw against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Bayern Munich can now stretch its lead to eight points over the defending champion by beating struggling Borussia Dortmund later in 'der Klassiker.' Five rounds remain after this weekend's games. Wirtz couldn't return soon enough for Leverkusen, which was knocked out of the Champions League – by Bayern – and the German Cup – by third-division Arminia Bielefeld – while the 21-year-old player recovered from an ankle injury. Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso sent him on in the 57th minute and he made an immediate impact, setting up a chance for Exequiel Palacios. Union forward David Preu was booked on his Bundesliga debut for a bad challenge on Wirtz's ankle in the 83rd. Wirtz carried on and remained central to all of the home team's attacking play. Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow was alert to a Wirtz cross before Granit Xhaka fired Leverkusen's last chance over from a free kick. Union's fifth straight game without defeat means the Bundesliga title is Bayern's to lose. Also Saturday, Hoffenheim defeated Mainz 2-0 to leave Leipzig in fourth place, the last for Champions League qualification, Freiburg came from behind to beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1, Augsburg won at Bochum 2-1 and St. Pauli won a relegation battle at bottom side Holstein Kiel 2-1. ___ AP soccer:

Leverkusen title hopes take hit in Union stalemate
Bayer Leverkusen's Patrik Schick reacts in frustration during the goalless draw at Union Berlin (INA FASSBENDER) Bayer Leverkusen's slim chances of defending their Bundesliga title were left hanging by a thread after a scoreless home draw with Union Berlin on Saturday. Leverkusen could have cut the gap to league leaders Bayern Munich to three points with a victory. Bayern host Borussia Dortmund later on Saturday and can go eight points clear with five games remaining should they beat their 'Klassiker' rivals. Advertisement Despite welcoming back star midfielder Florian Wirtz from a foot injury, Xabi Alonso's side lacked fluency in attack, carving out few clear-cut opportunities. Union had the ball in the net after 14 minutes when Andrej Ilic headed in a rebound after a save from Lukas Hradecky, but the Serbian was flagged for offside. Wirtz came on after 57 minutes and despite giving his side an initial boost, was unable to break down Union's defence. Granit Xhaka had a free-kick from the edge of the box in stoppage time but blasted his shot well over the bar. The draw continues a poor April for last season's unbeaten domestic double winners, who were eliminated from the German Cup semi-finals by third division Arminia Bielefeld. Advertisement The draw took Union to 34 points, 12 clear of the relegation spots with five games remaining. Dangling close to the drop in February, just a year after facing Real Madrid in the Champions League, Union have turned things around. The Berliners have taken 11 points from an unbeaten five-game run against Leverkusen, Bayern, Eintracht Frankfurt, Freiburg and Wolfsburg. Borussia Moenchengladbach's hopes of returning to the Champions League took a hit with a 2-1 home loss to Freiburg. Gladbach took the lead after 14 minutes when Freiburg captain Christian Guenter turned the ball into his own net. The visitors levelled two minutes later when Patrick Osterhage headed past Tiago Pereira Cardoso. Advertisement Freiburg snatched all three points when Johan Manzambi scored a 90th minute header, allowing the visitors to leapfrog their opponents into sixth. Augsburg continued their strong 2025 with a 2-1 win at lowly Bochum, climbing past Dortmund into eighth. Augsburg have only lost one of their past 13 games. Elsewhere, Hoffenheim took a step towards beating the drop with a 2-0 home win over Champions League hopefuls Mainz, with Andrej Kramaric scoring a brace. The win sent Hoffenheim eight clear of the relegation spots, while Mainz -- who battled relegation a season ago -- missed a chance to climb to third on the table and stay fifth. St Pauli also boosted their hopes of top-division football next season with a 2-1 win over fellow promoted side Holstein Kiel. dwi/pb
