Aggression not for everyone: Shubman Gill needs his own voice, not mimic Virat Kohli

It would not be far-fetched to suggest that Shubman Gill may be trying to mimic certain aspects of Virat Kohli. Since being appointed Test skipper, he has moved to the No. 4 slot where, notably, some of his best knocks in the ongoing England series have have been moments when Gill has shown glimpses of Kohli-esque behaviour. One such instance was his celebration at Edgbaston the roar, the celebration strikingly similar to Kohli's century celebration at the same venue in This may be a hot take, but the only reason to suggest Gill isn't actively trying to replicate Kohli is that his game might be suffering as a result. Yes, it's entertaining to be the one dishing it out, but when you're on the receiving end of verbal jabs, it's a different game altogether. That's what made Kohli so great: he thrived in the fire. But that style isn't for everyone, and perhaps not for his first Test as captain, Gill had stated that he didn't want to copy anyone's style, instead focusing on being his own man. But is that truly the case?Gill has certainly been more confrontational, a shift from the composed figure we've seen over most of his career. This change should serve as a wake-up call. Opposition players, as Ben Stokes demonstrated on the final day at Lord's, are more than happy to return the the great Virender Sehwag, one of India's finest batters, initially struggled with trying to model himself after Sachin Tendulkar. But once he embraced his own identity, he flourished. The parallels for Gill are clear — and perhaps HOSTILE TACTICS BACKFIRED? Former cricketers Sanjay Manjrekar and Mohammad Kaif, in hindsight, both suggested that Gill's approach — especially his verbal duel with Zak Crawley on Day 3 — might have worked against him.'Gill suddenly looking tentative last evening had a lot to do with the hostility he got at the crease from England. Virat performed better, the angrier he got. Dhoni is the exact opposite. Gill must decide what gets the best out of him as a batter — calmness or anger,' Manjrekar posted on X.'Shubman Gill's fight with Zak Crawley charged England. After Edgbaston, there were questions about their batting, bowling and captaincy. But that incident fired up Stokes, and he bowled an inspiring spell. It is wise to stick to the attitude that works for you. Gill will learn this the hard way,' Kaif echoed.'What would have fired him up in this game was the Indian team targeting Zak Crawley in that one over,' Broad said on Sky Sports Cricket. 'It was great fun, brilliant to watch, but he wouldn't have liked the fact that one of his players was out there alone, with just Ben Duckett for company, and the team going at him'. advertisementGill however, defended himself and suggested that those few minutes of play cannot determine an entire Test match. Instead he pointed out other moments that could have turned the result in their favour. 'No, five minutes can't define five days of hard work. If you ask me about key moments, that wouldn't even be in my top five. For us, Rishabh's run-out was more crucial. At one point, we felt we could get a 50–100 run lead, which would've been massive on Day 5 when batting gets tough. That was a big turning point," Gill said at the post-match press conference. Only time will tell if Gill can carve out his own identity as a Test captain. Since taking over, he has looked eager to take England head-on a trait that could either define or derail this early chapter of his two Tests still to play, Gill has the chance to quiet his critics, including me. A series win would put many of these concerns to rest. One thing, however, is clear: this Indian Test team is full of fighters. The challenge for Gill is not to become someone else, but to channel that fight in a way that stays true to who he really is.- EndsTune InMust Watch

IND vs ENG: 'Find a new...' - Nasser Hussain highlights what India are missing after narrow loss at Lord's

Shoaib Bashir celebrates dismissing Mohammed Siraj (Photo by) India's gut-wrenching 22-run loss to England at Lord's on Monday has reopened the debate around the absence of Virat Kohli from the Test setup. Chasing a modest target of 193, the visitors crumbled to 170 all out despite a heroic, unbeaten 61 from Ravindra Jadeja . As the dust settles, attention inevitably shifts back to the void left by India's former No. 18. Former England captain Nasser Hussain , speaking on commentary during the gripping final day, echoed the sentiment felt by many fans. 'No Virat Kohli today. India needs to find a new one. The old one has retired. He was the king of the run chase,' Hussain remarked on air. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! This five-Test series marks the first time since 2011 that India are touring England without Kohli. Both he and Rohit Sharma called time on their Test careers earlier this year, just days before the squad was announced. Naturally, speculation brewed about how India's batting would hold up without two of its most experienced heads. Those doubts seemed to fade early in the series as Shubman Gill 's team made an impressive start. Centuries from four of the top five batters, coupled with Rishabh Pant 's aggressive form, temporarily silenced any questions about the leadership transition. India vs England: India fall short at Lord's, England lead series 2-1 However, at Lord's, those murmurs returned with force. The top-order collapse exposed the kind of temperament and experience that Kohli had brought to these tricky fourth-innings chases for over a decade. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 고현정 따라해 2주만에 몸무게 뚝..! Gill's animated exchanges with Zak Crawley over time-wasting hinted at his growing aggression, but it also reminded many of Kohli's animated on-field presence — a signature trait fans admired and rivals noted. Poll Do you think Shubman Gill has the potential to fill Kohli's shoes as a leader? Yes, definitely Maybe, with time No, he can't Ultimately, what India missed the most on Day 5 was not Kohli's aggression or aura, but his batting. In a chase that required a calm head and experience under pressure, Kohli's absence was felt in every misjudged shot and nervy defence. With England now leading the series 2-1, India face a crucial task ahead. The fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester begins on 23 July, and the team management will be eager to regroup, reassess and respond. Whether someone steps up to fill the Kohli-sized void remains the biggest question hanging over this promising but inconsistent Indian side. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. ‘No place for Kohli-initiated shoulder barge', but Lord's Test wasn't like that – Atherton praises players for their ‘passionate intensity'

Even as Mohammad Siraj was fined a demerit point for his 'screaming' celebration at Ben Duckett, former England captain Michael Atherton has sought to differentiate passionate expressions and nastiness, by raising the example of Virat Kohli's shoulder barge to Sam Constas in Australia. '… wouldn't spectators rather see players caring too much, rather than too little about playing Test cricket; caring too much, rather than too little, about playing for their country?' Atherton wrote on The Times. He then brought up the Kohli example. 'There should be no place, for example, for the shoulder barge that Virat Kohli initiated in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne last Christmas, when he diverted from his path to deliberately walk into Sam Konstas. No one, of course, wants to see physical altercations on the field of play, or sustained nasty verbal abuse. 'But here there was none of that here, except two teams full of passionate intensity, commitment and skill. What a Test match they gave us.' Kohli's shoulder barge occurred on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test last December. The ICC's Code of Conduct states: 'Any form of inappropriate physical contact is prohibited in cricket. Without limitation, players will breach this regulation if they deliberately, recklessly and/or negligently walk or run into or shoulder another player or umpire'. Former captain Ricky Ponting had then laid the blame squarely on the Indian. 'Virat walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation,' he said on Seven. 'No doubt in my mind whatsoever.' Another former player and commentator Kerry o'Keefe echoed similar sentiments. 'Kohli has built his whole career on arrogance. Suddenly he identified that in a debutant, and he seemed to resent it. I think he's in trouble,' Keefe said on the Fox Cricket broadcast. Kohli was last sanctioned by the ICC in 2019 for another shoulder-barging incident with South Africa's Beuran Hendricks. Back then Kohli had admitted he was guilty. This time, he was docked 20 percent of his match fee. Atherton noted how the two episodes were completely different. He also brought up another incident from the final-day chase at Lord's. When Ravindra Jadeja collided mid pitch with Brydon Carse. 'In a match where there was plenty of spice and niggle, tempers flared as Carse and Jadeja collided mid-pitch, although the impact was entirely accidental, after Jadeja had deflected the ball towards third man, with both players ball watching rather than minding each other's path. In this game, though, it has not taken much kindling to spark the flames and Stokes, if you please, moved in as peace-maker, standing between both players, as they exchanged pleasantries.' He also wrote how Jofra Archer reacted to dismissing Rishabh Pant. '…his off stump flattened. Archer offered some choice words as Pant walked off'. Atherton summed up the Test thus: 'Six years ago to the day Lord's had witnessed the most remarkable finish to any cricket match, when the World Cup final was decided on a boundary countback after a Super Over. Now the game delivered an extraordinary finish again, with two of the protagonists from that day, Stokes and Jofra Archer, taking centre stage. In the context of Test cricket, it doesn't often get as tight as a 22-run winning margin.'

'India need a new Virat Kohli, the old one is retired': Nasser Hussain's jibe after Gill's men lose at Lord's

Multiple mentions of Virat Kohli have been made during the India vs England Test series, and for obvious reasons. This was, after all, India's first England tour without the talisman since 2011. Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired barely a fortnight before India's squad for the five-match Test series in England was announced. All the talk before the series opener at Headingley was about how India's batting would fare without Kohli and Rohit Sharma. That changed quickly after four of India's top five scored centuries. Rishabh Pant, in fact, scored two. India's new-age batters, led by captain Shubman Gill, vice-captain Pant and opener KL Rahul, kept on firing on all cylinders in the series but the discussion around Kohli never really stopped. Nasser Hussain and Virat Kohli Whether it was India's inability to bowl England out on Day 5 at Headingley or Gill's aggressive reaction to England opener Zak Crawley on Day 3 at Lord's, former cricketers always missed Kohli's presence with the Indian outfit. On Day 5 at Lord's, Kohli, the batter, was missed for the first time during this series. Chasing a target of 193, India were bowled out for 170, losing the match by 22 runs despite a terrific hand from Ravindra Jadeja (61*). Former England captain Nasser Hussain said India would need to find a new Virat Kohli as the old one, the master runchaser, albeit in limited-overs cricket, has retired from red-ball cricket. "No Virat Kohli today. India need to find a new one. The old one has retired. He was the king of the run chase," Hussain said on commentary. Kohli announced his retirement on May 12, five days after captain Rohit Sharma. Still active in ODI cricket, Kohli is one of India's most prolific run-scorers across formats. Ravindra Jadeja, India's tail resist but England run away with 22-run win England's bowlers produced a decisive burst on the final morning of the third Test at Lord's, claiming four Indian wickets to put the hosts firmly in control before Ravindra Jadeja's late defiance kept the contest alive. India, chasing 193 for victory, resumed on 58 for four but were reduced to 112 for eight by lunch, as England's pace attack, led by Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes, made full use of a deteriorating pitch with variable bounce. Rishabh Pant briefly lit up the morning with a one-handed straight drive for four off Archer but lasted only two more deliveries. Battling a finger injury, Pant was undone by a beauty that nipped in and knocked over his off stump, leaving the keeper-batter grimacing in both pain and disappointment. KL Rahul appeared more settled, crafting 39 and holding India's hopes together. But Ben Stokes, full of fire and intent, got one to seam back sharply and struck him on the pads. The England skipper dropped to his knees, pleading for the decision. The umpire was unmoved, but England's successful review sparked a roar across the stands and sent Rahul back. Washington Sundar's stay was brief. He fell for a duck as Archer showcased his athleticism, diving to his right to complete a stunning one-handed catch off his own bowling — a moment that electrified an already buoyant Lord's crowd. Jadeja and young Nitish Kumar Reddy offered some resistance, defending doggedly in a crucial 30-run stand that briefly slowed England's charge. But just before lunch, Chris Woakes struck the decisive blow, finding Reddy's edge to end his solid vigil. The wicket triggered warm applause from a near-capacity crowd who had turned up in force on a Monday morning. With India still needing 81 runs and only two wickets in hand at lunch, England looked on course for a famous win. However, Jadeja's gritty stand with the tail took the match to a dramatic finish.
